A new wonderland Is now open to the hunter, fisherman and summer tourist magnificent scenic region he tween Cody, Wyo., and Yellowstone Park. The Hurlmu'ton has made prac tically half rates for .summer trips from all points on its system to Cody and return, the irate way to this coun try. From Cdy west, the new road fol lows t he north fork of the Shoshone Kiver to Marquette, the location of the tfreat government dam now under way for the storing of the waters of the Shoshone for irrigating 2').0O0 acres of Uig'llorn IJasin lands. West of Marquette, two log cabin inns have been built by Col. Cody for the occom modation of tourists, one at Wapiti, 3S miles from Cody, and another at the l'ahaska Tepee, at middle fork, 4 miles irom Cody; from Middle Fork to Lake Hotel, Yellowstone Park, is 32 miles the road crossing the Hookies at Sylvan Pass in the midst of some of the grandest scenery of the entire Ilocky Mountain chain. The new re gion to be opened offers probably the finest trout fishing in the world, and, in season, ample elk and other game shooting. The development of this country has been the work and pride of Col. lill Cody, whose permanent home is at the Irma Hotel, Cody, Wyoming. Probably the most easiest and most natural way to arrange for a tour through this new region is to go direct to Cody, where all arrangements can quickly be made for the coach journey over the route, sojourning at the dif ferent log cabin inns, or for camp out tits, horses, teams, mules, guides and everthing of this kind. The Turlington has a special de- sciptive folder of this locality on the press, copies of which can shortly be obtained of the Burlington Agent. How It Is Today. Life's sunshine is braided with death's shadows. On Decoration day one beheld many sad scenes as they dec orated the graves. The faithful wife and mother lay still at rest. Many beau tiful flowers were placed on her grave. Always and everywhere appropriate, their perfumed lips spoke of the eter nal gardens, and the lily sang its glad some song. As the heart broken daugh tej left the grave of that one most dear to her on earth, she said with tear be- di mined eyes: "Mamma always loved tiowers she never had many in life, but she has now." Yes, we thought how much better it might have been had some of these beautiful flowers sweetened that poor mother's heart be fore it was stilled in death. Here is a esson for the living. Some of us await too long to appreciate our dearest friends, and then make a grand display on Decora tion day simply because others do. Oh, what a deceitful old world we boast of! Very Sore. The sorest lot of delegates that ever returned from any convention, were those who came home from the repub lican congressional convention at Falls City this morning. The dele gates are so sore that it makes them mad and they want to fight when the words "Falls City" are mentioned. They are so sore they will hardly talk about the doings down there and the turn down the B. & M. railway gave them. When they get started to talk ing they are all like sky rockets and go right up in the air. It is amusing to hear them tell how they lacked two votes for a goodly number of ballots, to nominate Judge William Ilayward and yet they could not get the two votes. Even Pollard of Cass county, would not let go of those two votes, for Pollard evidently had a tie up, as usual, with Lancaster county, and w as going to get her votes when it came the proper time. Jlr. Pollard knew this and kept his delegation in line. This thing Cass county has done a number of times and did it eight years ago, in the big battle fought here in the republican convention and has always given Otoe county a black eye, politically, when she could. She has for years made an alliance with Lan caster county and won out over the other counties. The delegations outside of Lancaster county had the nomination laid in the way of Judge Richard Xeal, of Xema ha county, when Lancaster made the switcli and cast her solid vote for Pol lard, thus nominating him before the secretary could announce the vote. 1 1 was a clever move and was done before any one realized what had been done. This is what makes the delegation of Otoe county sore and want to fight. Nebraska City News. Stimulation Without Irritation. For Nebras ka or at least for a Nebraska man is demanded the honor of having dis covered the earliest and most delic ious sweet corn in the world. For many years the black Mexican was known as the earliest sweet corn, but the black kernels were objection able to the eye. It was a sort of race problem in agriculture. This black corn grew ripe enough for the table in eight days, or ten days ahead of the white "Evergreen." An ear of white corn supposed to be a freak of nature was found in a held of Black Mexican one day. It was removed, the kernels carefully planted in distant soil, and in fifty-seven days a toothsome new variety was ripe. Later planting has fixed this seem ing freak in an established species. Nebraska pats herself upon the back for other reasons, too. It is said to have the largest cream ery, the largest broom factory, the largest individual cattle feeding sta tion and the largest and only beet sugar syrup and refining plant in the world. It is the first state in the produc tion of rye. third in the production of corn, fourth in the production of wheat, oats, cattle and hogs. The second largest smelting works and the third largest meat packing in dustry are located there. Nebraska is the first state in the production of vine seeds and sugar corn for seed purposes and yields more than all the balance of the United states combined. It has the greatest number of dis tinct varieties of native pasture and hay grasses of any state in the union. In the eastern half of the state it claims to have land of the highest agricultural value in America, yield ing more than any other equal area. Philadelphia North American. Not the Whole Cheese. There is one man in Plattsmouth who has recently come to the conclus ion that he is not the "whole thing" by any means. He thought for awhile that the merchants of this city had to do his biddintr the must "pony up" to assist him in increasing the valua tion of his property pay out money for the purpose of bringing enterprises here calculated for this purpose. He has made threats that he will drop all efforts in this direction if they do not do so and so, that he would cease all efforts to get manufacturing establish ments here. Let him cease who cares? The people, as a rule, have not the fondest love for him, anyway. It has ben demonstrated that he is not by any means the man to enihuse our peo ple in any laudable enterprise. We have no use for a selfish, conceited man, who believes in building up a town by buying most of his goods in Omaha. The smaller merchants are onto him, and will do everything they can for most any person who comes to them for aid but not him. Huge TasK. According to the Fremont Herald good roads is the paramount question before the American people today, and particularly should the govern ment unite with the states in making roads. That paper says: "It is preg nant to the consuming population of towns and cities, and to railroads, manufacturers and tradesmen as well. Hut the weightier consideration is, that church, school and farm interests must inevitably be retarded while road conditions remain as they are to day. If the American home is to be preserved, tiie American farm must be fostered. The logic of this deduc tion will readily present itself. If ig norance is the parent of superstition and superstition shuts out the light from the soul that should be free, then the progress of civilization and the wholesome growth of the religion of the Lord depends upon the universal spread of education in the land. The higher schools and colleges are doing grand work, but the free common schools are the more important be cause they are the school of the mul titudes in which are laid the deep and lasting foundations for coming lives of usefulness and for the betterment of mankind. The common schools are the. schools of the rural population. Whatever tends to better these schools to make them stronger and of higher curriculum, to give greater eMiciency and better die-inline, and to make them easy accessible all the time, should be the concern of every pat ri otic citizen. Nothing can conduce Mich results as improved highways. Neith er rural church or school, nor yet the farm, can nourish, where impassable roads aound. and if these cannot flour ish our free institutions will soon or late topple and fall. The question of nationai aid to good roads is one the government cannot afford to ignore much longer. The neccessity for it is so apparent that it is without the do main of controversy. Statesmen and philosophers know that good roads make good people. Improvements of highways means not only advancement of commercial interests, but also mor al welfare. The highways are paths along which civilization and develp- ment move." That's What's the Matter. Plattsmouth is noted for its pretty women and homely men. Still, in the very lace of this fact, our galoots of boys hide behind hitching posts or other scant means of cover and allow foreigners or non-residents to come in here from all points of the compass, with their picnic shoes, eye glasses, pug dogs, walking sticks and a pile of cheek, and right betore their faces in plain daylight, carry away to' other climes our lovely young women, whom God nor sunshine can not make pret tier. Is it any wonder that this aged writer should feel pugnacious at such actions? No, nor is it any wonder for him to make this assertion that our young men, for their dilatory actions, should be compelled to retire to their lonely couches unloved and unwept. Be Good to Others. According to the very best informa tion obtainable, we pass this way but once, and when we step into the valley of the shadow, all our earthly belong ings will be left behind. Not a cow, nor a sheep, nor an acre of land, nor a dollar of money will go into the grave with us. Why then should man race through life in a mad right for gold, brushing all the better things aside, when at last it must be unloaded at the tomb? Would it not be better to smile a little and do a few good deeds as we go along? Would it not be a bet ter plan to put a flower into the hand of sad-hearted human being, struggling along the road of lie, than to clinch an almighty dollar until cold death forced us to relinquish it?
