An exchange rises to remark that the next United States senator from Nebraska will jc "one whose posi tion on questions of great interest will not be of a doubtful quantity." That sounds like the opening of a political campaign. Who would have suggested at the time of their election, that there was any ques tion as to the position of Deitrich, Millard, ISurkctt or any of the great and good men who have represent ed the railroads of this state in the national seriate? The railroads will select the next senator from Ne braska, in case the legislature is republican, and there will be no question as to his position upon all matters effecting the railroads. The railroads never make mistakes. Individual Incomes. Reform Between Friends. Mr. Roosevelt's administration is at least consistent in discrimin ating between those who are and those who are not friends for the purposes of reform. It has been but a week or ten days since the President "fired" some Federal of ficials because they failed of suffi cient rigor toward an offender who did not happen to have a friend in th.e Cabinet. Following this, and capping the Roweii-Loomis and I'.ir.I Morton incidents, comes Sec- vy ;aw s exoneration ot J;an- Walsh. of Chicago, who caused i ke: in the United States more than four million families, comprising nearly a third of the nation , must get along on annual incomes of less than four hundred dollars jer family; more than one-half of the families in the United States get less than six hun dred dollars; two-thirds of the fam ilies get less than nine hundred dol lars, while only one in twenty of the nation's families is able to ob tain an income of over three thous and dollars a year. Mr. Moffett cites the conclusions of experts in financial statistics to the effect that whatever may befall individual mul timillionaires, or individual sons or grandsons of multimillionaires, the rich are destined to grow so much richer that in thirty or forty years, under existing conditions, the five thousand richest Americans, instead of having fifteen billions between them, as they have todav, may have fifty or even a hundred billions. Some well-informed per sons go so far as to assert that John I). Rockefeller alone, should he live to 1926, when he would still be a younger man than Kussell rageis today, would himself be able to dis pose of eight billions of dollars. The mind reels when it essays to reckon what might be accomplished with so vast a capital were it left to a son or a grandson of great strength of intellect and character. to accomplish results. It should not be given in the name of any po litical club, but in the name of the state committee, and the expense to be met by the committee and at tendants. In other states the plan has been tried with profit. The Telegram commends it heartily to Chairman Allen and the state committee. ' ' Chairman Allen need not wait to call the committee to gether for action, but let him issue an invitation to all democrats to at tend such meeting, fat the same time request each one to signify by the return mail his intention of at tending or otherwise .CI By such re sponses it can easily be determined the number that will be present and how to proceed in completing arrangements. This meeting would inaugurate a movement that would result in a complete organization of the party in the state. On with the movement. Mk. Rogkrs may have forgotten all he ever knew about Standard Oil, but in the end Missouri desires to be shown. I'r R.v criticism of csider.t Roosevelt's interpretation t!ie Monroe uoctrir.e is as just as it is forcible. Monroeand the states men of histime never had a thought of setting up protectorates over the weak republics of Latin America. In the minds of Oeorge Channing, the lritish secretary of state, who suggested it; of Jefferson, who con sulted alxnit it, and of President Monroe, who promulgated it, the Monroe doctrine meant neither more nor less than that we woidd not suffer Kuropean powers to mo lest or impose upon the colonies of Spain, which had, with our hearty approval, recently won their independence. Walsh's methods. To be sure, "that part of the banking law which prohibits the loaning of more money than 10 per cent of the cap italization to one man may have leen violated," but that is not criminal, and the Secretary de clares that "Walsh did no more than many other bankers are doing all the time." A good many other people are all the time doing what Paul Morton ditl, and what Loomis did, too; but where is the excuse in that? The point now is, why should the Sec retary of the Treasury make light ot grave financial irregularities? The defense they all do it" is hardly Incoming, under the cir cumstances. "For our part," declares the Nation, "we find the Secretary's condonation of Walsh simply shock ing mosi shocking of all, per haps, from the fact that Mr. Shaw appears to think it the most inno cent thing in the world. Walsh is his personal friend. It is in the guise of friendship that Mr. Shaw comes forward to make light of the charges agai'.ist the Chicago banker and promoter? In this respect, it must be confessed, he is following an exalted precedent." Following an exalted President, to be exact. The administration is merely guilty of what a low order of ward politicians term in the most ex pressive vernacular "fronting" for its friends. It has acquired the for much-needed public buildings iir the growing towns and cities of the west and southwest. Let us live in the hope that before the end of the session enough money may be scraped together for a government building in Plattsmouth. Mr. Roosevelt's little Phillip pines tariff bill may or may not go through; but Mr. Burgess of Texas exactly expressed the senti ment of a great majority in the south and west, when he called upon the advocates of that measure to quit making agricultural products the burden-bearers of the produc tive svstem. A Railroad Commission. Among the things which appears " to have escaped the political piacc hunters, says the Peatrice'Sun, is the fact that there is to be elected next fall, three railroad commis sioners. These wili be contingent officers, their service depending up on the adoption of a constitutional amendment, which will create the offices. A prominent railroad man, and one who takes an'active parti in the selection of candidates for conven tions, suggests that the people must be very careful not to slop over, and select men who are liable to do something radical. He says there should be one good business man, a lawyer, and a railroad man, in or der that the commission will not do something that will not be indorsed by the courts. Probably lie would recommend business man who is a member of 'the elevator trust, a railroad attor nev, and a railroad man who is in the employ of one of the companies There is a great deal of anxiety upon the part of the railroads for fear that the people shall attempt to manage their own affairs, and fail. The disposition upon the part of the railroads to manage everything, is what creates a prejudice against them in the minds of the people. So far as the railroad commission is concerned, it will amount to noth ing. If it should attempt to do anything, the roads would simply step into court and get an injunction showing that the people have no rights which the railroads are bound to respect. c 171 r ir n o r 3 01 " . o-n r n n a The Kind You Ilavo Always Bought and which lias been, in use for over 30 years, has borno tho signature of and has been made under his per- jrrjf s 8onal supervision tdneo its infancy. The policy of "reform between friends" is seriously interfering with the Roosevelt vaunted ''square deal" and how much farther will it go? A Democratic Dinner Party. Here is another proposition ema nating from the brainy editor of the Columbus Telegram, one of best democratic papers in Nebraska, which meets with the Journal's hearty approval: "in view of the fact that the principles of govern ment advocated by the democratic party during the past dozen years are now fast winning favor in the state and nation. The committe is all right. Our object is to arouse the interest of individual democrats, so that they may be induced to give lietter support to the state committee.
