And may all those good resolutions stick to the last day, the last hour and the very last minute of the new year. A vouxc; man named Songster was recently married in Omaha. The experience of a great many men is that they forget to sing alout a year after marriage, if there hap Icns to lie a stout-lunged laly on the place. Kvr.K vtiiini; may come to him who waits, 1'tit the fellow who reaehes after it will get it first. The city that i-. contented to wait, will he waiting when other towns have all tiie improvements, l'l ittsi:;ot:th should Il'.ed. Kyi.uy democrat in the .state of Nebraska should now commence the agitation of preeint organiza tion. This is the way to effect a complete ami thorough organization and now is the proper time to start the hall to rolling. I oli.ow tip the study of the seed corn question with good whole some lectures on road making and other institute work, and the farm ers can have no ierson to blame hut himself, if he does not have im proved ideas of farming. refuse to assist if asked to do so. We speak for Cass county when we say there is not one hut who will give from 25 cents to Si, 00 to aid in wresting Nebraska from the clutches of those who are annually increasing the state's indebted ness, and thus shoving more taxes upon the shoulders of the farmers. If the democrats in every county of the state will inaugurate a move ment by which every individual democrat can oe solicited to give just what they feel able to subscribe, thousands of dollars could thus be raised. And in this manner a thor ough organization at the same time effected. Thk.kk is nothing that stimulates the determination to be better this year, quite so much as to look back on the follies of the past, especially when you feel the "difference in the morning" after Chrismas. But it's the same old step a few days later. Thk Burlington seed corn special that wound up its trip over the va rious branches of the system here last Saturday afternoon, done a whole lot of good. The farmers took a lot of interest in the lectures, and a large audience greeted the party in this city. It is reported from Washington that Senator Millard is Ixjseiged with applications from men who want to succeed Baxter, and yet no selection has been made. There is a great deal of the early-bird :xystem worked in politics, but the worm has not vet been caught. It was hardly a fair question that was propounded to Speaker Cannon the other day when a correspondent asked him if he believed the House of Representatives is just as repre sentative of the people as it used to le in years gone bv. But Uncle Joe was equal to the emergency, and without mentioning the Reed rules, promptly replied that th I lor.sc is just as representative now as it was when the country had only ten millions of people. Herein is w!k re Mr. Cannon, who has served over thirty 3"eirs in that body, knows better. In the present House there are many members who rep resent their constituencies by de manding that the statehood question lx; considered upon the merits of the several applicants; they are forthwith gagged and the final ac tion of the House on that question will be the reverse of representative. Such gag rule was unknown in the House even twenty years ago. True Americanism. Skcrktaky Shaw's appeal to western bankers to have mercy on Wall street has a strange and unfa miliar sound. But as the greater part of the wealth of the country is created this side of the Alleghanies, it is not so strange that we have of late had a great deal of money to lend to Wall street, and the finan ciers in that alley ought to have known that we would want it back. Organization of the voters is the work the Nebraska democracy must expend thought and energy if the state is reclaimed from the cor poration party which now misgov erns it. A strong organization is the only thing that will accomplish the much desired result. Now is the time to begin the work upon some plan that will secure success. Kverv partv worker in the state should lend himself strongly and sincerely for the purpose. There is essential harmony everywhere throughout the state as to issues and questions. With intelligence and industry the democratic voting pop ulation may be brought into sym pathv and practical co-operation -;tli tht tiartv nurnose. Nebraska democracy confronts a test of party character and capacity. Let every individual upon whom the labor of organization devolves go at it promptly and energetically. We do not have the official machine from which to draw the necessary funds, but we possess a membership of as good and patriotic men as ever breathed the breath of life the yeo menry of the state who would not President Roosevelt's disapproval of the proposed collection of money for a wedding present to his daugh ter, is a proper rebuke to the spirit of flunkeyism which unaccountably possesses some of the people of these United States. From the proposition to shower coin upon the president's daughter it might be judged that some Amer icans were of a very cheap order of todies and enjoyed their conditions; that we had a lot of barefooted peas antry in this country who got a certain emotional satisfaction from being driven over by the wheels of royalty's chariots. There are two kinds of snobs, as Thackeray effectively pointed out, and the worst kind is the flunkey, the negative snob. I le is the chump who enjoys being patronized, and who makes it possible for the ag gressive snob to exist and flourish. He enjoys being patronized so well that if the other fellow doesn't vol untarily notice him he fawns and licks the other fellow's heels. He is the sort who would gratefully take a beating from those whom he is pleased to regard as above him. He likes to be kicked so well that he will get in the other fellow's way. He is habituated to humbleness, a sickish thing to contemplate, the cheapest genus of the homo family. But he is commonly supposed to have his being and abode elsewhere than in this great, fee, democratic countrv. Mr. Roosevelt is not disposed to encourage tue munKey. nis im perialism doesn't by any means de mand a throne. Princess Alice is a Princess only in the sense that ev ery other miss is in a country where royalty is the right of every man and woman. Hers is to be no royal wedding beyond any other wedding. Miss Alice is a plain case of Ameri can girl. Her marriage is to be an excellent, typical American mar riage, without even the foreign fea ture of a'titled bridegroom. livery American can on this account re joice and wish the happy couple godspeed. It is a matter of real pride when an eligible girl fmarries a good American. The band shorld play "Yankee Doodle" for all it's worth. But Miss Alice, or the president for her, doesn't pro pose to put up with any mawkish ness and maudlin patronizing from unAmerican contributors of ten cent pieces. The $800,000 pro posed to be raised for a present might well be expended in publish ing and circulating copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Conttitution of the United as Cm The Hew Year. m i m a i New Year, I look straight in your eyes, Our ways and our interests blend; You may be a foe in disguise, But I shall believe you a friend. Banning, who has served his constituents so admir ably and faithfully for the past three years, steps out to make room for his successor. The past year Mr. Banning served as president of the board, and all through his of ficial career has demonstrated that business capacity which should be long to every member of the board. The tax-payers of Cass county, whose interests he has so faithfully and diligently watched, regret his retirement. The new county officials go in tomorrow, and the old ones step down and out. May the new ones prove as faithful and efficient as the old ones. Telephones on Trains. The newest improvement to be in troduced on the New York Central line is a telephone, by which the con ductor can talk from any part of the train to the engineer in the cab. The invention, which is as yet in the ex perimental stage, has been tried with some success, and it will now be in stalled on most of the fast passenger trains for further testing. Hereto fore the whistle cord has been the only means of communication between the engineer and the conductor. Indigestion Overcome. How much chance is there that one of them will develop the genius of the founder of his line, and instead of squandering; millions will accu mulate tens of millions; instead of living in useless luxury on his in come will prove himself a force in the industrial and financial world, a man able to fight and conquer like his father or grandfather? Extraordinary happenings are al ways unexpected, yet once in a century or so, like the advent of a mighty conquerer or reformer, they do come to pass. And if there should arise in this land a man of 30 or 40 who, starting with two or three billions owned or controlled by him) should be great enough to brush aside the trammels of indo lence and temptation, great enough to see that never in modern times has there been offered to a man, not even to Napoleon, so stupen dous a chance as this to wield ab solute despotic power, great enough finally to use his two or three bil lions to its full poteutialit3", then well, there would surely be inter esting history made in that man's lifetime? We have had our iron kings, railroad kings, copper kings, sugar kings and others, but there is one kind of king we have not had yet. A real king? Yes, for how long, pray, would this Repub lic stand against the aggressions of such a man, a great-minded despot without conscience or bounds to his ambition, one in comparison to whom our Rockefellers and Came- gies would seem like blundering beginners? Already our million aire magnates have begun to buy our courts and Legislatures, to cor rupt our cities, to debauch the pub lic conscience; he would finish the work and do it thoroughly, he would make the laws, own the newspapers, subsidize churches and colleges, mould public opinion, direct the machinery or justice, control the industries, the banks, the insurance companies, the con ditions of labor, regulate supply and demand, fix prices, absorb pro fits, centralize everything, be everything. Why not? Even as things are, has the world any king more powerful than J. P. Morgan or John D. Rockefeller? Remem ber how Europe cringed to Mr. Morgan at his last visit, with Emperors seeking his favor and Princes waiting at his door. A real king? Why, we practically have two of themalreadv! Success.
