MEETING OF CITY COUNCIL
The Shop Whistle Will Hereafter be Used
as a Fire Alarm.
The council met In regular session
Tuesday evening. The most Import
ant business was the passing of the
ordinance prohibiting tlie use of cer
tain explosives, a copy of which ordi-
dinance appears elsewhere in this is
sue of the Journal. The annual ap
propriation bill was also passed and
will be found In full elsewhere in this
issue.
An ordinance having for its purpose
the removal of telephone and electric
light poles from Main street to the
back alleys, was read for the first
time and referred to the judiciary
committee, with Instructions to re
port at the next meeting. Also an or
dinance In reference to the removal of
signs was read and referred to the
same committee.
The old fire bell, which has been In
adequate for its purpose, Is to be sub
stituted with something better. A
communication from one of the 15. &
M. olllclals was read in which was ex
tended the use of thc company'sboiler
house whistle for fire alarm purposes,
on condition that telephone connec
tions be secured from the central sta
tions of Nth telephone companies.
On motion of Mr. Newman of the fire
and water committee it was decided
to put the new system Into use pro
vided that the cost will not exceed the
sum of f:k.
A number of repairs were ordered
upon the streets in various sections of
the city.
The report of City Treasurer Clem
ents shows that on the 10th day of tiie
present month there was In his hands
the sum of (4,4mt.41.
The Eagles of the city were granted
the privilege of the street for their
Fourth of July celebration with the
understanding tliat no gambling will
be allowed and that a sufficient police
force w ill be provided for both day and
night.
The report of Police Judge Weber
shows that during thc month of May
there were fourteen arrests, and that
the sum of 170.30 had been collected In
fines during that time.
The reports of the street commis
sioners and chief of police were re
ferred to the proper committees.

Current trade conditions are without
chaDge and collections continue slow
as a rule, but there la growing confi
dence in the future, dealers exhibit
ing an Inclination to prepare for tall
and winter on a larger scale. There
la still much complaint that the weath
er is unseasonable for distribution and
payments are not prompt. Reports
regarding the building trades are al
most uniformly favorable, structural
work increasing as the season ad
vances. Railway earnings, now prac
tically complete for April, show a loss
of only 2.8 per cent, compared with
last year, and surpass the correspond
ing month of any preceding year. The
decline In the cost of living has con
tinued without interruption since
March 1.
List prices for iron and eteel prod
ucts are maintained In most cases,
mainly because of agreements
rather than the support of consump
tion. The supply Is limited. Some
evidence of weakness Is noted In
hides, both domestic and foreign, al
though actual changes tn quotations
are small.

Ellas was discharged on motion of
Assistant District Attorney Rand at
the conclusion of the testimony of
John R. Piatt, the aged millionaire,
who caused her arrest for extortion.
Mr. Piatt proved a disappointing wit
cess. To questions bearing directly
on the charges on which the woman's
arrest had been made be answered re

remember whether he had given Mrs.
Ellas large sums of money during the

in connection with the charges against
