If the city council begin to listen to
pleas for a reduction in occupation
taxes, they had jut as well repeal the
ordinance entirely. When they reduce
for one it must lie done for others who
make the demand. If a man can't pay
his occupation tax let him move out
and make room for some one who can.
Our advice to the council is, stick
strictly to the text and serve all alike.

Tax Ferrets.
The county commissioners of Cass
county recently closed a deal with a
couple of delinquent tax experts who
will go over the records at the court
house and hunt for taxes unpaid, and
make an effort to collect them, receiv
ing a percentage for their efforts.
They are called in other states tax fer
rets and their methods is to delve into
the records in the various oflices of the
court house and look for records of
monies, mortgages, etc., not given in
to the assessor and to demand payment
on same. It is just barely possible
that before their labors have been com
pleted that there will be several parties
in Cass county who will be called upon
the carpet and asked questions which
w ill be embarrassing for them to an
swer. To illustrate, If A holds a mort
gage against I', or has loaned li a
thousand dollars and did not give the
incident to the assessor these tax fer
rets w ill look the matter up and A will
be compelled to pay taxes on the same
together with the accumulated inter
ests and cost of collections. It is a well
known fact that Cass county is annual
ly swindled out of thousands of dollars
in this and other methods by the dis
honesty of the larger property holders
and money loaners. Louisville Courier
