sister has lieeoine interested, and to
whom other ladies are present iuj; dia

have his name t hanked to t hat of Kasy
Pitkin's.
Tiikkk are hundreds of people who
voted for Mickey last fall that coiihht t
lie induced to do so aain, even if the
oniMirtuni t v is ever allorded. lie is
certainly the weakest, man mentally,
and tin; most inferior, executively
speaking, that ever occupied t he rulicr-
natorial chair. His bigotry and self-
esteem is all there is to him.
TiiKmanwho even intimates that
there is not the least show for the elci
tion of a democratic candidate for
president, as against I loose volt, utters
what he knows himself to he a lilt Ic
white lie. With a united democracy
the party would rather make t he tijl it
against the accident president than
any man whom the repuhlicanscan or
w ill nominate. And the man who pult
lishers such rot knows it, if he has any
iiolitical sense at all.
Tiik loxinr contest which was to
come oil at Nebraska City next week
has Itoen declared off on account of the
threatened intervention of Coventor
Mickey. If the governor would show
one-half the disposition to do his duty
in many other direct ions, of a far worse
nature than boxing contests, that oc
cur riht under his very nose, it would
look much 1 tetter: for instance the pros
edition of the man who attempted to
bribe him. lse a little judgment
Coventor, in meting out justice, even
from your own prejudicial standpoint.
Tiif.uk is a held in every city in
which rich men who have retired from
business, the practice of the profession
or the farm can tfive valuable and use
ful service to the community in which
they live, if they would do so. There
are public enterprises aside from the
active administration of municipal af
fairs which would derive benetit from
the business shrewdness and expe
rience of such men. Put they keep
closed mouths to matters that arise
U'fore them of a public nature and
never raise their voices either in ap
proval or condemnation. Such indif
ference is not healthy to the growth of
any city or community.
Tiik Chicago Chronicle does not take
kindly to an editorial that appeared
in the Omaha World-Herald recently
regarding the candidacy of C rover
Cleveland. The Chronicle is the last
paier on earth that has any rirht to
take exceptions, from a democratic
standpoint, to anything political that
appears in a paper like the World-
Ilerald. A paper that has bolted dem
ocratie nominations almost incessantly
from ls);,and but a few weeks nonsup
ported the regular republican candi
date for Mayor of Chicago in prefer
ence to Carter Harrison, should bridle
itself when it comes to taking such pa
pers as the World-Herald to task for
anything in the interest of the demo
cratic party that appears in such pul-
lications.
It is tiyured out that the appropria
tions passed by the last legislature are
the heaviest in the annals of the state:
$77.j,uon greater than two years ao;
$I,0."s,ooo greater titan four years, and
$l,3l.",ooo greater than six years ago.
It must lie borne in mind, also, that
the republican majority in each Itody
was the most overwhelming in years,
and nearly every memlter of that ma
jority (and several of the minority)
wore the corporation yoke with pride,
andjeven hautuer. While this is true it
is also true that there was wanton
waste and flagrant disregard for the
rights of the people in wonderful eco
nomically legislating of six years ago.
and the legislature of six ago was anti
republican. These facts should le
kept constantly before the voters of
Nebraska until the election one year
from next fall.
Ox Wednesday night of last week
alnit two hundred state university
students, after giving-their shirt-tail
parade as they term it, through
the principal streets and hotel lobies
at Lincoln, attempted to invade the
Kaglcs carnival with their disgraceful
hilarity, where they met with objec
tion from the managers. This came
very near resulting in atirst-class riot.
As it was, several of the students were
severely delt with, and one or two o
iicemen and several citizens were more
or less injured. Such demonstrations
on the art of the students arc a dis
grace to the state. Ami when they
found out they could not run things
to suit their tastes and were I talked in
their efforts to do so, they made threats
f boycotting the Kaglcs by refusing to
patronize any business house owned by
a member of the organization or those
who have Kngles in their employ. "
its face these shirt-tail parades should
not permitted, and when the stu
dents of the university attempt to dis
grace themscves again, as they did on
this occasion, the police should arm
themselves with t-elm clults ami go af
ter them in a way they deserve.

The Omaha World-Herald bites so
bard as to almost lake the cork under,
and makes the bold declaration that,
if C rover Cleveland is nominated thai
paper will support lloosev-it. There
is no cause for such a declaration, :: i I
esiH'cially from the only democratic
metropolitan daily in Nebraska. It is
establishing a bad preeedent for pa

the letter, is not the right, kind of
sentiment, in a party leader, and one
that, has already had an.eli'ect to w ideii
instead of closing t he gulf between two
host ile factions.
Crover Cleveland's candidacy is out
of the tpiest ion, but is seri vug 1 1"' pur
pose for which it is advanced by the
leaders of the republican party that
of keeping alive the iil-I'ei ling eiejen
dered against Mr. Cleveland, and to
call forth such uncalled for utterances
as those emanating from the World
Herald, the leading democrat ic paper
of Nebraska.
With the proper elVoi I , nod the i i,:ht
man to head the national ticket, the
democratic party have a splendid op
portunity Ift elect, the next president
of tin; Cnited Stales. Hut it can nev
er le done as long as 1 1 ie iea 1 ing pa pers
of the land entertain the idea of bolt
ing, a spirit tint should be entirely
dispelled. It hasalready Ihsu so thor
oughly instilled in the minds of many
here in Nebraska to the extent that
men will enter a convention as dele
gates, assist in selecting candidates,
and if these candidates do not just ex
actly suit them, the convention, they
think, floes not bind them by any
means t o support the licel. and as a
general rule, either don't go to the
polls or if they do they vole direct
against the ticket they assisted in
nominal ing and are in duty bound t o
support. This has Im-cii too much the
practice, and such articles as the one
re fe red to arc not calculated to help
matters very much.
There is great hope I'm-I he demo
cratic party, and the .loiirnal believes
a properly managed cam pa ign. u ii h an
able, conscientious standard h- arer to
lead them, there is no quest ion as to
the success ol democracy next yevr.
Vciln Efforts.
It often happens that physicians
make vain efforts to cure a disease
which then is cured by a household
remedy. Mr. -his. Prochaska. 1 111. south
1th street, Omaha. Neb., wrote us the
following. 4,My wife was sick for three
months and under the care of a doctor,
but he could not cure her. Instead of
getting Itetter her condition grew
worse, until a 1 tout a month ago we
happened to get a bottle of Timer's
American Klixir of Pitter Wine. My
wife used several bottles and we must
state that it helped her. She could
leave the led soon and is now well
again, givingall thecrcdit toyourw ine.
We dropped the doc! or and took to the
wine and the result is thai she is
perfectly well.' Cases like this are
nothing unusual. Triner's American
Klixir of Pitter Wine dilTers from all
other blood purilicrs and tonics in
keeping the stomach st nng and work
ing during the cure while most medi
cines first spoil the stomach. Your
appetite will improve at once. It will
make you strong and hale. At drug

Thousands Have Kidney
Trouble and Never Suspect it.
How To Find Out.
Fill a bottle or common glass with yonr
water and let it stand twenty-four hours ;
a sit hment or set
tling indicates an
unhealthy con
dition of the kid
neys ; if it stains
your linen it is
evidence of kid
ney trouble ; too
frequent desire
to pass it or pain
in the back is
also convincing proof that the kidneys
and bladder are out f order.
What To Do.
There is comfort in the knowledge so
often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer's
Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy,
fulfills every wish in curing rheumatism,
pain hi the bark, kidneys, liver, bladder
and every part of the urinary passage.
It corrects inability to hold water
and scalding pain in passing it, or bad
effects following use of liquor, w ine or
lecr, and overcomes that unpleasant ne
cessity of Uing compelled to go oftcn
iluring the day, and to get up many
times during the night. The niiM and
the extraordinary effect of Swamp-Root
is soon realized. It stands the highest
for its wonderful cures of the most dis
tressing cases. If you need a medicine
you should have the U-r-t. Sold by drug
gists in fiftv-cent and one-dollar sizes.

A Succcssiul Company.
At the annual meet ing of the I'latts
mouth teleplione compan.y recently
the regular h jier cent dividend was
declared on all stock of record on
January 1. 1'."':;. The stockholders
decided to at once completely cover
Cass county with farm telephones:
to build three small exchanges and
to extend the toil lines from Have
lock to Lincoln to connect with the
independent system being built there.
For this purpose a new No. lo cop
per circuit will be strung frur Platts
mouth to Lincoln. The copper circuit
now terminal ing at Ha velock w ill also
be extended into Lincoln giving two
lirst -class copper metallic circuits
from Plattsmouth to Lincoln and con
necting all southeastern Nebraska and
sout 1 1 western Iowa with the capit a 1 of
Nebraska.
The company will sell the balance of
the :,'V,noo of new stock offered the
money so obtained to be invested in
the above named extensions. The
idea is to distribute the slock all over
the territory covered bj' the Platts
mouth Telephone com pan j", thereby
making it truly a local company and
extending its inlluence and prestige.
The placing of the stock on the mar
ket two weeks ago has broughta great
many inquiries from different parts of
the state, as well as Cass county, tint
the company prefers to sell only to
Cass and Lancaster county citizens,
and expects to place the remainder of
the new stock within the next few
weeks. Any persons thinking of in
vest ing ii this st ock should not delay
sending in their applications, for the
sale of this block of o.imii) will com
plete the system and no more stock
will be placed on the market.
