They were viewed by thousands. The school children came in line, under the directions t;f their teachers, and passed to review the remains of the father of Arbor day and the advo cate of timbering the tieeless prai ries. There was a military escort from Company C, N. N. G. This, with the Commercial clu, city council, fire de partment and factory employes, all formed in line and escorted the re mains. After lying in state at the library building, which was a present to the city from Mr. Morton's oldest son, Joy Moiton. the remains were escorted to Arbor Lodge, the family home, and there they lay in Mate for three hours until the hour of the funeral. In each place the floral offerings, which were rrcfuse, were banked about the casket, and so great was the supply of flow ers that many of them were banked up in the ends of the rconi, making a Tery imposing sight. The funeral services were conducted by Revs. Eason and Knickerbocker of the Episcopal church, and were main ly ritualistic. The remains lay in the room where thoso cf his beloved wife, who died twenty-one years ago. and where also lay those of his favorite son Carl, a year ago last January, when they were brought here from Waukeegan, III., he having died very tuddenly from pneumonia. Special trains bearing friends from Omaha and Lincoln arrived at noon, and these people joined with the throng here in the cortege that escort ed the remains to their last resting place at the cemetery, where they were laid by the side of those of his wife and son. At noon all of the banks, business houses and industries closed, and the schools were closed early in the day. LIVES LOST IN PANIC. Eight Factory Girls Killed in Stam pede Caused by Their Own Fright. PHILADELPHIA. May 1. An un fortunate accident to a deaf and dumb boy. Isador P.accus. was today directly responsible for the death cf eight girls and young women. t the fatal injury of three ethers and the serious injury of more than two score of girls em ployed in the cigar factory of Harbur Ser. lioman & Co., a branch of the American Tobacco company. located at Tenth street aad Washington ave nue. The building in which the disaster occurrred U a five-story bricK struc ture, and reaches an entire block. Twelve hundred persons were at work tt the time of the accident. 90 per cent of whom were girls whose ages range from 12 years upward. Wilhelmina Doing Well. THE HAGUE. May 1. Thinning Out Supply Bills. WASHINGTON. May 1. The house fcas pa33ed the agricultural appropria tion bill and began consideration of the District of Columbia appropriation bill, the last but two of the regular supply measure:. By the terni3 of a special rule adopted before the dis trict till was taken up it will be in order to attach a rider to It to make operative the existing personal tax law of the district, which ha3 been a dead letter for twenty years. OMNIBUS BILL IS PASSED. Appropriates Over $17,000,000 for Pub lic Buildings. WASHINGTON, April 20. Under a special order, which allowed three hours' debate, but which cut off all opportunity of amendment, the house passed an omnibus public building bill which will distribute $17,403,450 among 171 cities. As the bill deliv ers into the treasury 11.585,000, the total amount carried by the bill is re duced to that extent. The bill provides for seventy-seven new buildings and sites, six buildings on donated sites and fifty-eight in creases In appropriations for build ings already authorized. It also provides for the purchase of sixteen sites. The majority for the bill was so overwhelming that only nine members backed a demand for the ayes and noes m the passage of the bill. There was some criticism cf the method by which it was proposed to pass 'the bill without opportunity for amendment, which Mr. Mercer,, chairman cf the committee, answered by stating that if the bill had been subject to amendment the appropria tions carried by it would have been increased to $07,000,000. MAKES PLACE FOR EVANS. Vacant Place May Be Offered to Com- missioner of Pensions. WASHINGTON. April 20. There is a probability that Commissioner of Pensions Evans will be offered the Ksition of consul general to Ixmdon to succeed William McKinley Osborne, whose death has been announced. White House officials are reticent in regard to the matter as Is also Mr. Evans, but there is reason to believe that the president would very much like to have him accept it, and the chances are decidedly in taror of its being offered him. Mr. Osborne's death was not a sur prise to his friends. He had been confined to his home since November last, suffering from Brlght's disease and dropsy, which, latterly, affected his heart. He was conscious until near the end.. The deceased never had been absolutely well since he ar rlvd in England. TREATY NOT YET RATIFIED. Sale of Danish West- Indies May Be Left Vo Inhatftants. COPENHAGEN, April 30. The bill providing for the sale of the Danish West India islands to the United States, amended by the Landsthing, came up for discussion in the Folke thing today, with the result that the party in the majority submitted a pro posal as follows: The Rigsdag (Diet, composed of both houses) approves the cession, on condition that the inhabitants of the ilsands declare In favor thereof by a plebiscite, similar to the one taken in 1SC7. The Folkething, by a vote of 98 to 7, adopted the majority proposal sub mitted today. Millions in Gold Dust. PORTLAND, Ore., April 30. Ac cording to the Nome Nugget of Feb ruary 11, which has arrived from the north, coming by registered mail via Dawson, a very important discovery has been made there. A New York syndicate, at the head of which is a well known mining man of the Pacif ic coast, has been for eighteen months quietly prospecting the Tundra be tween Nome and Penny rivers. The result of the work accomplished, the paper declares, is startling. It shows that million of gold dust are deposit ed In the vast Tundra plains which skirt the Bering sea coast. List Reaches Forty-four. CAIRO, April 20. The body of an other of the Burke boys was taken cut of the river just above Cairo, and the body of a colored roustabout was recovered just below the city. The body of William R. Bolinger of Cin cinnati, steward of the Pittsburg, was recovered near the wreck. Forty-four bodies have so far been recovered and it is believed ethers are yet to be found. Dentist Convicted of Assault. OTTUMWA, la.. April 30. Doctor Mark Vance, a dentist of this city, was found guilty of the charge of assaulting a little girl who came to his office to have some dental work done. Wilhelmina Improving. THE HAGUE. April 30. Queen Wil helmina passed a quiet night and all her symptoms indicate improvement. Smelter Closes at Helena. HELENA, Mont.. April 30. The works of the American Smelting and Reduction company were closed today because of a strike order issued late last night by Mill and Smeltermen's union No. 14G, which affiliates with the Western Federation of Miners. The strike was called because the company will not recognize the union. There is no question of wages, hours of la bor or other grievance involved in the difficulty. PRESIDENT SEEN STOCK RAISERS' ASSOCIATION HAVE A HEARING. AT TO HAVINC FENCE REMOVED No Encouragement that the Order Regarding Same Will Be Rescinded President Rather in Favor of Small Settlers. WASHINGTON, April 30 Senators Dietrich and Millard presented to the president the representatives of the Stock Raisers' association who have been in the city for the past week looking after general legislation that will open the public domain to the cattlemen under the leasehood prop osition which is contemplated in bills now pending before congress. President Roosevelt expressed him self as desirous of seeing the range problems of the west adjusted so the lands may be secured for small set tlers with the least degree of hardship upon those now using them for graz ing purposes. In the matter of re moval of fences, which was taken up by the delegation, no assurance could be given of relief from the order3 which have been Issued by the in terior department providing for taking down the fences around government land. The visiting cattlemen have little hope cf securing any modifica tion of the fence removal orders. They assert that the removal of the fences without the passage of the grazing land leasing law will cause the withdrawal of much capital from the cattle business ' and will force many investors and owners of herd3 to remove their property to Canada, where the government is very liberal in its treatment of stock owners. Before leaving the capital the cat tlemen will endeavor to formulate a bill providing a leasing regulation ap plicable to the state of Nebraska, leaving other states to depend upon their own exertions to secure leasing legislation suitable to their needs. Most's Appeal is Denied. ALBANY, N. Y., April 30. The ap plication of Johann Most of New York for a certificate of reasonable doubt In connection with his appeal f 7m a judgm-.at of conviction of violuting the state laws relative to inflammatory publications was today defied by Chief: Justice Parker of the court of appeals. Most was convicted of having pub-i lished in his paper an article which, it was held by the-court, "tended to destroy the public peace." Most will be compelled to go to prison pending the final settlement of the case by the court of appeals. Packing House Employes Discharged. CHICAGO, April 30. Five hundred employes of the packing firm cf Lib by, McNeil & Libby, have been re leased, owing to "dull times." They were given their discharge Saturday night, but the fact did not become generally known till yesterday. Superintendent Morrow of Libby, McNeil & Libby, said that the pro posed government investigation of the packing business had nothing to do with the letting out of employes and the plant would by no means be closed. It is not unusual for the meat business to grow comparatively dull at this season. Iowa Monuments. DES MOINES, la., April 0. The Vicksburg commission for Iowa has been selected by the governor and the contracts for the construction of monuments to cost $150,000 will be let at once. Very Rev. T. Treacy, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic church and dean of North western Iowa, received a letter from Bishop-elect Phillip J. Garrigan of Washington, D. C, stating he would arrive in Sioux City June 19 and that his Installation would occur on that date. He directed that Rev. Father Treacy be transferred to the deanry of Carroll. Ia., on June 1. Dean Treacy has been in Sioux City four teen years. Manufacturers of car and locomo tive brake beams have formed a trusL Conservative Dies with Him. NEBRASKA CITY, Neb., April 30. It ba3 been announced that after this issue "The Conservative," a week ly journal established by the late J. Sterling Morten, will be suspended. Hay Has Net Withdrawn. ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo., April 30. The friends of John W. Hay announce that he hS not withdrawn his name as candidate for nomination as con gresr.se from Wyoming. It DISPLEASED WITH SHAW. London Newspaper Criticises Speech Made by Secretary of Treasury. LONDON, April 29. The speech of the United States secretary of the treasury, Mr. Shaw, at Pittsburg at the banquet April 2G in celebration of the late General Gran't birthday has thus far passed unnoticed by the Loa don, press, with the exception of tut Globe, which is exceedingly wrathy at such a responsible politician "tickling the ears of groundlings with a speech full of menace to America's only friend among the powers of Europe. After quoting the speech the Globe continues: "We are not greatly concerned either for the threat or the crude vul garity which causes Mr. Shaw to ap ply it to a particular power, but what impresses us with a sense of Ameri can cadence is the manner in which the absurd speech was received. Were an English minister of Mr. Shaw's position to make a similar allusion to a foreign power all the chancellories of Europe would be convulsed. But England heeds it not a Tvhlt and the rest of the world shrugs, fts shoulders and talks about diplomacy, in shirt sleeves." DENOUNCES GENERAL SMITH. Representative Sibley Wants Presi dent to Give Him a Dishonor- WASHINGTON, April 29. Repre sentative Sibley of Pennsylvania cre ated somewhat cf a sensation in the house yesterday during the general debate on the agricultural bill by de nouncing General Jacob H. Smith for the orders he issued in the . Samar campaign. He declared General Smith was a disgrace to the uniform he wore, and he expressed the hope that the president would strip him of his uniform within forty-eight hours. Mr. Sibley's speech was enthusiasti cally applauded by the democrats and, was received with some evidences of approval on the republican side. The speech was considered . the more re markable in that it came from a re publican who left the democratic party on the issues raised by the Spanish war and who since has been an ardent expansionist. GO7: w fSP&i age has withdrawn from the race for renomination, his formal announce ment having been made public late this afternoon. This movement has not been unexpected, and the general expression is that it relieves the gov ernor's friends from much embarrass ment. What effect the governor's decision will have on the political chessboard is not easy to forecast. People here think the atmosphere will be clarifiea noticeably within the next few days. Five or six aspirants for governor are already in the field and may be ex pected to increase their activity. None of the county conventions have yet been held and only a few have, been called. The state convention is set for June 18 and i3 sure to precipitate a brisk competition for Governor Sav age's succession. TRIAL OF PRINCESS BEGINS. She Pleads Not Guilty to Forging Name of Cecil Rhodes to Notes. CAPETOWN, April 29. The trial of Princess Radziwill on the charge of forgery in connection with notes pur porting to have been endorsed by the late Cecil Rhodes, but which the lat ter repudiated, began in the supreme court here Saturday before the chief justice, Sir J. H. Devilliers. The princess pleaded not guilty and counsel for the defense applied for a postponement of the trial in order to obtain evidence from England. The application was refused. There are twenty-four counts in the indictment. Though Rhodes and Schultz, the two principal witnesses, tave died since the case was first filed, their evidence, in the form of affidavits, denouncing the signatures on the notes as for geries, holds good. How Moody Will Enter Cabinet. WASHINGTON, D. C April 29. Representative Moody4 (Mass.), who is to enter the cabinet on next Thurs day as secretary of the navy, expects to make his public service continuous, remaining in the hous-j of represents tices until Wednesday night (when his resignation will be forwarded to the governor of Massachusetts) and entering on his new du'ies Thursday morning. t Increase Deposits VI ay 1. SOON TO BE A LAW OLEOMARGARINE MEASURE 18 PASSED IN THE SENATE. IT NOW COES TO THE PRESIDENT Cockrell of Missouri Makes Motion to Agree to Modifications Members Concur Without Division Teller Offers Amendment to Tax Trusts WASHINGTON. April 29. After a brief discussion today the senate fin ally agreed to the house amendments to the oleomargarine bill. The meas ure now goes to the president for signature. An effort was made by Mr. Teller to amend the measure so as to levy a tax of 10 per cent of the capital or assets on any butter trust that might be formed, but it was de feated. Mr. Simmons of North Carolina ad dressed the senate on the Philippine bill. He urged that the Philippines ought to be turned over to the inhab itants of the islands. He denounced the cruelties and barbarities alleged to have been committed by the Amer ican army, and said he felt like call ing upon the great, brave and humane man now in the White bouse to probe these things to the bottom. The conference report on the Chi nese exclusion bill was adopted. Con sideration of the 6undry civil appro priation bill was begun but not con cluded. Mr. Harris of Kansas presented the following telegram he had received frdm the Kansas Millers' association: "Kansas millers, on account of for eign discriminations, with the best wheat in the world at their door, are not producing over one-third of their full capacity. Unless your committee on foreign relations can give us re lief through reciprocal concessions, placing our millers on an equal basis with foreign mills, many of our mill3 will shut down indefinitely and some of them will be forced to the wall. In our distress we look to our sen ators for relief." - The .telegram was referred to the committee on foreign relations. Mr. Teller then offered an amend ment to the renovated butter section of the bill as passed by the senate de-. fining a butter trust, and providing that a tax of ten per cent shall be Imposed upon the products of such a trust and upon capital and assets of Buch a trust. The amendment was defeated 25 to 23. Mr. Cockerell of Missouri inter posed with a motion to agree to the heus6 amendments and the motion wa3 agreed to without division, thus passing the bill and it now goes to the president. Mr. Piatt of Connecticut presented the conference report on the Chinese exclusion bill. He briefly explained that after "a somewhat strenuous dis cussion" the conference had decided that no limit could be placed on the operation of the Geary act as re-enacted, and thought that it should re main in force until otherwise provid ed by law. In response to Inquiries by Mr. Teller, Mr. Piatt explained that the operation of the law in the Philippines, including a registration of the Chinese in the islands, had been placed in the hands of the Philippine commission, but the commission would tave no authority to admit Chinese to the islands. Renew Attack on Government. LONDON, April 29. The revelation of the terms of the agreement made between the German lines of steam ers and the shipping combine has led to renewed newspaper attacks upon the British government. W. J. Pirrie, head of the ship build ing firm of Harland & Wolff, will meet J. P. Morgan in London teday to settle, various details connected with the combine and to prepare a circular for the shareholders of the companies concerned. Chagrin Felt at Rome. ROME, April 29. A painful impres sion has been caused at the American embassy here by the actions at Ven ice of the men from the Chicago. It was said at the embassy that after the Italian court has finished with the offenders they will be arraigned be fore an American court martial. The Queen's Condition. THE HAGUE, April 29. The bulle tin posted at Castle Loo this morning announced that Queen Wilhelmina passed a quiet night, that her morn ings are now feverless, and that her evening temperatures are decreasing. Ambushed by Filipinos. MANILA April 29. Five men of the constabulary have been ambushed at San Juan Del Monte, near Manila One of the party was killed and one injured. Samar Insurrection Ended. MANILA, April 29. The surrender of the insurgents of the island of Sa mar, headed by General Guevarra, who succeeded Ganeral Lucban in that island, has been officially effected. WRIGHT PRAISES CHAFFEE. Taft's Assistant Says General Is Loyal Supporter of Civil Rule. MANILA, April 28. At a farewell banquet here to the officers of thu Ninth infantry Acting Civil Governor Luke E. Wright paid a glow ing tribute to the mfllitary forces. He said the army, under circumstances of surpris ing difficulty, had paved the way for tho work of the civil authorities, and that only a few cases of friction be tween the two branches of govern ment had occurred. He said that Gen eral Chaffee, whose opinion might at times have differed from those of the civil authorities, had been a mobt loyal supporter of civil rule. Replying to Civil Governor Wright. General Chaffee said that the officers of the army knew that their duty to the country demanded their utmost efforts to sustain the civil authorities and to suppress the rebellion. VARIETY PROGRAM IN HOUSE. Miscellaneous Subjects Will Come Up for Consideration. WASHINGTON, April 28. There is a .miscellaneous program ahead for the house this week. Today the spe cial rule for consideration of the om nibus public building bill will be brought in and passed and the re mainder of the day will be devoted to District of Columbia business. Wednesday the conslderatiton of tho agricultural bill will be considered and after it is disposed of the District of Columbia appropriation bill will be taken up and probably passed before the end of the week. With its passage only two appropriation bills will re main to bo acted on by the house the naval and general deficiency bills. Sel dom have the appropriation bills been so well advanced at a long session of congress as they are this year. GRANT TAKES SAMAR LEADER. American Commander Returns with Insurgent Chieftain. MANILA, April 28. General Fred erick D. Grant's expedition in the gun boats Basea and Baseo, several steam launches and native lighters, has as cended the Gandara river, in the isl and of Samar, and has brought the in surgent leader Gueverra and his en tire command down the , coast. . Tho command consIst3 of Rafel SebastUta, Abaki and thirty-eight other officers, 189 men and 161 rifles. Three hruidred insurgents, with 131 rifles, are expected to arrive at Cat balogan, Samar, to surrender formally to the American authorities. Three thousand bolomen, part of them armed with rifles, surrendered Friday at Su lat, also in Samar. Suggests Retaliation. LONDON, April 28. The Daily Ex press, which declares that every con siderable steamship line except the Beaver line, has no joined in an agree ment to raise saloon fares for trans portation across the Atlantic, publish es an interview this evening with Sir Charles Tupper, former Canadian high commissioner in London, In which he advocates, in the event of the con trol of the Canadian Pacific railroad passing to the Morgan Interests, that retaliatory measures be taken by tax ing American imports and that spe cial legislation be adopted to prevent Injury to Canadian interests. Kruger May Visit America. THE HAGUE. April 23. The report published in Paris that President Steyn of the Orange Free State is com ing to Europe to consult with Mr. Kru ger is entirely without foundation. On the other hand, it is true that the Boer agents in America are renewing their entreaties that Mr. Kruger visit the United States next June. He prob ably will comply with these requests if sufficient pressure is exercised. Ccnaty Will Not Resign. WASHINGTON, April 28. Bishop James Conaty, rector of the Catholic University of America, emphatically denies a published report that he con templates resigning the rectorship of the university . He says there are no dissensions at the university and that he ha3 no intention of resigning. He also authorizes the statement that there i' j foundation for the reports concer .ig the financial condition of the university. The arbitration commission of con gress has decided against Rosa Geib trunk, whose husband claimed $22,000 damages from Salvador on account of property destroyed there during the revolution of 1398. Cholera Kills Off Natives. MANILA. April 28. The Cholera situation does not show any Improve ment. Cases are reported among the American soldiers in the Camarine provinces of Southern Luzon and else where, but so far few Americans have been attacked and the disease is main ly confined to natives and Chinamen. In Manila there have been 535 cases and 449 deaths from cholera, while the provinces report 1,593 cases and 1,169 deaths. MORTONTS DEATH THE FOUNDER OF ARBOR DAY JOINS THE MAJORITY. Stir ling Morton, former secretary of agri culture, died at 4:C yesterday after noon at I.ake Forest, at the home of M.h Hon, Mark Morton. For several weeks Mr. Moitori had been gradually falling. Sterling Morton, ex-secretary of ag riculture, had died at the home of bis third son, Mark, in Lake Forest, III., yesterday, after an Illness of several months. Ia.nt Tuesday was bis seven tieth birthday and the usual celebra tion was omitted liere out of n-. juct to Mr. Morton's condition. Mr. Morton came to Nebraska in 1834 and settled with his wife on the farm that has been his home ever since and which, by the force of tho man, has become known throughout the country. The first Arbor day was celebrated at this home by the family long before it became a world holiday. Tho conception of Arbor day was one of the flashes of genius which Mr. Morton has always attributed to hU wife. It was to Jir also that Arbor Lodge ovrs it name, but u Mr. Mor ton Belongs the fame that has u.u shed from its hospitable tjois. On this farm four sons, Joy, Paul, Mark and Carl were born and grew up to carry the name of Morton out Into the world. Joy Morton is now one of tho powerful figures in Chicago finance. Paul Morton is vice president of the Santa Fe railroad and Mark is at the bead of several of the great Morton Industries. Carl, the youngest and best beloved, is dead, having passed away at Waukegan, 111., a year aga last January. Ever since his coming to-Nebraska. J. Sterling Morton has been a mighty factor in the development of the state.
