Some paper down east wants to know what we will do with Roosevelt Teddy seems to be doing something with himself and it may be he would resent having "any ting done to him." We would hate to be the one to ap proach him on the subject. Tobey and Hayward arc getting their press agents broke into active work and as a result the papers of the district arc being requested to print, free of charge, a whole lot of stuff in the interests of the two candi dates. And some of the boys are doing ill money into the publication for some time in an effort to give the republi cans of Cuss county a live republican paper, borne of them appreciated it and some did not. The last move ment which was made by the owner by the advice of the editor, Mr. Quinn. ought to have been made long ago We trust that now the paper will thrive and prosper. The boys have put in sonie hard work to make the daily win and it is not their fault that it did not. Here's success to the Plattsinouth News-Herald and its bunch of hardworking people who get it before the people. Fairbury Gaz-zettc. OUR FAST BUNCH OF DIAMOND DOBBERS Plattsmouth Has One af the Fast est Teams In the State. A special grand jury has been work ing diligently for sonic tome to deter mine whether "white slavery" existed in that New. York or not and the re port has been given out that the city is not guilty. John I). Rockefeller, Jr., was foreman of the jury and owing to his financial prominence more than ordinnry interest has attended the de liberations and investigations of the jury. Leading into every little town in Cass county, with the exception of l'lattsmouth, are good graded roads and that means that the other towns arc willing to make a bid for the farmer trade even if riattsmouth is too nig gardly to do so. And the other towns arc getting the trade. If the mer chants of this city do not believe this wo would suggest that they make a trip over the county and see for them selves. Next Monday afternoon at 5iU0, our time, ut Reno, Nevada, one J. Jeffries and one J. Johnson will pro ceed to change one mothers faces for the paltry sum of $101,000 and m the presence of the governor of the state an a few others and less notables. Thousands of dollars are being wagered that the big smoke will not last more than a limited number of rounds and big odds are being wagered that Jef fries will pull down the long end of the purse. Perhaps. And then ngain perhaps. A New loik paper says: It looks as if the Wclls-Fargo stockholders have been able to "eat tin ir cake and have it, too," After increasing the capital stock 'J00 percent and de claring a 500 per cent cash dividend some tome ago, a quarterly dividend i, i I , i . , mis now neen ueciarcu on tne in creased amount of stock at the same rate as prevailed before the increase took place. Plattsinouth. has two daily papers, or rather had until the News discontinued last Saturday. There is no room for one. Very foolishly a few years ago there was a newspaper war with the result that the advertis ing rates were cut to a point where they do not pay the cost of composi tion, consequently in the cuse of the News it became decomposition. The management will put in all its efforts now to make its semi-weekly edition a thing of beauty and a joy forever, and it is to be hoped that the people over there will lend their assistance in the matter. Hon. K. M. Pollard, who owns the paper, has been putting Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S CASTORI A up in rairuury mere is a "young lad" we used to know well. He was at one time an associate of the writer on this paper and we always had good reports to make of him. Then he left us in our hmesomeness and misery went away, dually getting stranded or something at Fairbury where ho was compelled to undertake the work of putting new life and vigor into the Gazette at that place. He is succeeding all right, as we knew he would, but at the same time has taken unto himself airs and . has become "cockey" if you know what that is. Recently there appeared in this highly moral, and at the same time, great family newspaper, a little whisky edi torial to which our friend seems to take exceptions as instance what fol lows from his pen: It seems to be so easy for the 1 average editor to throw a few shots at Lincoln on account of its dry condition when occasionally some fellow gets tanked up in that town. The latest conies from the Platts inouth News-Ilerald who took a shot at the dry town because a little child happened to get hold of its dad's whisky bottle and imbibed freely with the usual result. Col. (juinn thinks it must be easy to get the stuff in Lin coln. The Plattsinouth News has has its office next door to a jug emporium. He can sit in his of fice and look with longing eyes across the stmt on the opposite corner and see another booze fac tory. By turning his chair slight ly he can look across the streit and see another one. When he goes to his meals he passes by two more and when he goes to his peaceful slumbers he takes them right over anther jag maker. It is not to be wondered that our old sid paitner should look upon the matter as an easy proposition. " Now we are occupying the same chair that our brother, Harrows, so ably filled when he was here and up to the time we read his diagonosis whatever that may be) of the case we had not fully realized our posi tion, to say nothing of our condi tion. Honestly, as we dash this off on the typewriter a dryness appears m our throat and we are attempted to go out and see for ourselves whether all these thirst empoiiums do really exist or whether it is only the imagi wuuuu vi me uazme man niter a n - . nymg trip to Lincoln. Barrows, if you have been fooling us we will never lorgive you. Last Sunday's game fully demon strated the all 'round ability of the Red Sox when they defeated the crack Lincoln Star team, who for but the second time this year met their mas ters. Our sporting editor was not on the scene Sunday when the shut out game was executed, having gone to Omaha to see some professional (?) ball, and he got his pie-recepticle full. It was Omaha and Wichita and the comedy of errors dished up Sunday was enough to make Willie Shakespeare's version read like a card of thanks. Omaha fans think a lot of Ta Rourkes trained nurses, for they go wild whenever their pets steal a base or get to third and never whimper when they fail to score, becauset herere used to it we suppose. Of all the dubs that ever booted a pig skin the Omahaogs are the bell-cows. One would judge from the stunt they put on that they had received their train ing at some ladies seminary, and as Ade says, they couldn t put up a ball were it handed to them on a silver tray with water cress around it. This may sound like spreading on the mustard with a paddle, but the Plattsinouth Red Sox can skin Rourkc s aggregation as easily as a monk can skin a banana, and we predict that ere the end of the present season the World-Herald will be asking for do nations for the establishment of a home for "also ran" ball players. Graham plays the game all the time but he re sembles a diamond m a dirty shirt when they get together. The game on the local grounds Sun day should bring out a record break er crowd. The Red Oak, Iowa, team one of the fastest of that state, will he here and they're will be something doing worth your while. The line up will be about the same as Sunday, and from their performance with the stars we see where the Red Oak will have to travel some if she ex pect to take our goat over the river. Don't forget the big game on the Fourth. The Lincoln Stars have ar ranged to play the Sox on that date. As the Sox have been the only team which has not allowed them to score this year they are naturally "laying for us." It will be their playing to regain lost laurels and the Sox playing to show them their superiority, so don't fail to be there. Of course if you're a cheap mutt, and prefer to do the tight-wad specialty by walking around and planting your self up on the hill where you can pinch your two bits, the boys would just as soon you stay at home with the rest of the cattle, or go to the gate keep er like a man and tell him your broke no doubt he'll let you in free. Don't climb the hill and get your eye full for nothing. It takes money to run a ball club and if your interested enough to see the game sec it as you should. It would be my aim to impress upon the schools of the state the necessity of giving a more thorough knowledge of the common school branches not only as a basis for further study but more especially for the benefit of the many whose education ends with the completion of the common school studies. 1 It would be my nim to continue the present harmonious relation be tween the normal schools, colleges ami university,, and to make the articu lation even more perfect between them I would exalt in every possible way the worthy profession of teaching, but above all I would promote the edu cational interests and welfare of the youth of Nebraska Very cordially yours, J. In response to an urgent demand from educators and from other citi zens throughout the state I have de cided to present my name before the Republican primaries for the state superintendence I desire to Bay that the efficiency of the State Department of Education is such that no oue can hope to improve greatly upon it. Having been in close touch with the work of the department d iring the past twelve years, under standing and approving of the leading policies of the administrations of Jack son, Fowler, McBrien and Bishop, together with my knowledge of pul lic school conditions in the state I feci that I ought to be able if elected to continue the growth and iimprtancc of this department in its relation to the common and higher schools of the state. I regret that Superintendent Bishop is not to remain to work out more fully the excellent movements started during his administration. It would be my desire to maintain the general policy of the present admin istration with reference to the teaching of agriculture and other industrial work in the schools. I would earnestly desire to lay special emphasis on the Children Ory FOR FLETCHER'S CASTORI A Call For Republican County Convention. The wound was serious enough to put him off duty for a day or two. One the same day, James Heed, a company brakeman, had his right middle finger flattened while making a coupling at Ashland.
