AN ECCENTRIC DOG.
Hit Pet Hobbies Wore Birdi' Nssts
and a Cat
1 once knew a veiy eccentric
dog. 11c was a real old English
spaniel, with long body, Bhort legs
with great bone, grand head, jaws
and teeth like a wolf's almost and
long ears that would meet his nose.
Foor fellow! His temper was cer
tainly unamiablc, but 1 think this
was caused by the 6tate of his
health.
He was a very curioua animal,
never showing much attachment to
any one. He would bite his best
friends on the least provocation.
Nothing, though, offended him so
much as being laughed at. That
was an insult he never forgave. If
you began to laugh at him he would
growl in a very ominous manner
and if you persisted in it would
Enap at you and give you such a bite
that you would not care to try
again. ,
If you wished to please him you
had to got a lot of old birds' nests
and give them to him, one by one.
He would carry them about for
some time, and then he would sit
down and tear them to pieces, lie
was not particularly fond of going
for a walk with any one, but if you
got some nests and gave him one
occasionally he would trot along
with you as happy as possible.
Another curious habit of his was
that he would never get out of the
way for any one. When ho was
trotting along he never moved from'
his line if ho saw any one coming,
but if he saw they did not intend to
move would begin to growl and look
60 savage that people usually made
haste out of his way. When he hap
pened to bo running down a hill ha
did not growl, but merely ran
against people if they did not clear
out, his great weight usually upset
ting them, of which, he took not the
slightest notice.
A great friendship arose be
tween this dog and a fine cat wo
had, and it was very amusing to 6ee
them together. He would walk up
to the cat and begin to lick her all
over, and then she would rub all
around him, purring and seeming to
be very lond ol him, when all of a
6udden she would stop, look up in
his face and spit at him, at the
tame time giving him two or three
sharp scratches, tho only notico of
which he took was to close his eyes
bo that they might not be hurt.

SPEED OF WILD DUCKS.
In
Dead Calm They Average
Fifty.
eight Miles an Hour.
My observations wer made with
mallard and widgeon just off the
sea and coming in at the evening
flight, such birds not having got
fully under way, having traveled
only about two miles or a mile and
a half, according to the state of the
tide. The times varied from 10
miles un hour in the teeth of a hur
ricane to 190 miles an hour with
half a gale driving them forward,
their speed with a full gale being
below this.
In a dead calm they averaged fifty-eight
miles an hour; but, as 1
have mentioned, they were not trav
eling at top speed. Other species of
duck fly much faster than this, the
speed of a merganser going down
wind being something terrific, and
if I mentioned my rough calcula
tions made as to its speed with a
stiff breeze behind it no one would
believe me, so 1 will refrain from
doing so.
Oue day in March, when a fresh
breeze was blowing down the Holy
sound, in Orkney, mergansers were
lost sight of in five seconds after
passing the point upon which 1 was
sitting. They are without doubt the
fastest of our webfooted birds, al
though other of the diving ducks,
such as the goldeneye, fly at an
enormous velocity.
The speed at which birds are
traveling is very deceptive. For in
stance, swallows appear to be going
very fast, but rarely attain a speed
of thirty miles an hour,' whcrea3
wild geese appear to be traveling
very slowly when 6een at a distance,
but see them passing over you at
dawn about fifty yards overhead
and their wing3 look like flywheels,
giving the birds the appearance of
huge bees in th half light, bo fast
are their wings vibrating. Edin
