It ia thought,, however, that he will touch upon the money question very lightly during hs itinerary. TllEKK will be oratory in Washing ton after tho holid iy until there is no rest. Already 5,013 bills have been introduced in the house and 1,974 in senate. It is sure the congressmen will have ample material to work upon. Democratic pap rs are quick to re sent the idea that the present pros perity and era of good wages ae the result of a republican administration. But who would have come in for the blama in case no prosperity had oc curred? "TnK 10 per cent increase is merely a restoration of o'.d-t'me wages." sneers the democratic Brooklyn Cit izen. True enough; hut the old-time wa?es were under a republican ad ministration, and the restor. tion b' another republican administration is made necessary by the blunders cf an intervening democratic regime. The democrats are quarreling among themselves as to whether they shall make the free silver bugaooo or the anti-iraperialisrn issue the ore dominant one in the next campaign. It doesn't matter what issue the demo pop Mr. Bryan runs on. IIo has been defeated ever since the coun- J uegan to realize that a rep.-iican adminis viuvwu u-; .li-ii it prosperity. FROM present indications the con test for the nomination for mayor on the democratic ticket is going to be very spirited next spring. Among those who have thus far shown syrnn toms of having a maj-oralty beo-T.l their bonnets are ex-Mayor John A Gutsche, John P. S itt.ler and James II. Ilero'd. It is presuu.eJ, however, that when Manager Grimes decides which of these men shall make the race, the other two will drop out. FoK commercial reasons, if no other, the relations between the United States and England and Germany 6hould be the most cordial, and those papers which print sneers at the "al liance" do so solely out of hostility to the administration, whose foreign pol icy has been so successful. Great Britain and Germany buy enormously of us, and, in f ict, b th countries have such an immense .balance of trade in our favor that wo should naturally feel friendly toward them. With the mines of the world turning out nearly four hundred millions of gold a year, and the United States ex porting over four hundred millions more of inerchacdise than she imports yearly, there is not much difliculty in understanding why the money in tho country is increasing at an unprece dented rate. Nothing like it was ever , ZUCKWEILER & known. And yet there will bo an ef fort made during the next year to per suade tho people that they ought to change tho system under which this prosperity has come. The lenders of tho democratic party are becoming more and more perplexed as the presidential campaign ap proaches. Most factions are fairly well agreed upon Bryan for candidate, but demands are coming from differ ent sections that he amend or drop certain of his issues; then his election will be insured. Hut what issues? He cannot drop silver or he will lose pop ulist and silver republican votes in the west; if be opposes expansion, he will alienate the smth. which is over whelmingly in favor of the policy; if he takes up the tariff question again, as free traders advise, he will antag onize workingmen in the north who aro enjoying steady employment and at increased wages; if he attempts to make a strong fight on trusts he will (ind himself forestalled by the repub licans. Mr. Bryan has expressed him self clearly on all these questions so that retreat seems impossible, and yet his attitude, as events have shaped, is at variance with his entire party, on one point or another. THE Nebraska City Press evidently has a "now" man on its editorial (?) st iff. There is a column in that sheet headed "Our Neighbors," in which criticisms on various newspapers are offered. The artist, is certainly "new" or he would not be guilty of criticis ing any newspaper, no matter how bad, through the columns of that pi por. The Press' news columns are a rehash of the News of that city and it was never known to contain an original editorial or give credit to the papers from which it takes them, but steals them from tho Chicago Inter 0:ean, Globe Democrat and other metropolitan dailies, and attempts to run a bluff on the reading public. Some kind friend should call this "critic"' to one side and put him onto himself. INFORMATION AND OFINION. At Sutton, Neb., a bridegroom failed to appear at the wedding. It is believed that during Janu- ary all manner of resolutions will bo offered, criticising the administration and declaring for the abandon uic nt of the Philippines. The appointment by the national committee of the new bureau of lit erature for the coming campaign can not but be gratifying to republicans of the western states, as it is made up entirely of western men. Perry Heath, the head of the bureau, was a western newspaper man, and was connected with a Nebraska piper for over ten years. Charley D.iwes is an old Ne braskan, and Senator Shoup, the third man on this most important committee, is an Idaho man. From this first move it is pain that the wet is to have much attention in the coining cj.m paign, aod tiiat Nebraska will be e--pecially well looked after. The Neb -aska memb ,i s of tho pres ent congress are showing great ac tivity in looking after the interests of their constituents. B-side-, Thurs ton, Mercer and Burkett are ench on important committees, and their corps of clerks and secretaries aie kjpt busy. The fusion members from Nebraska are taking it much easier, and each of vieni expects to m ike a private raving of the fund allowed for secretary hire. The commarcial interests of this country are already feeling the effects of commercial expansion in Cuba, Porto Rico and the Philippines. The exports from this country to the islands have more than doubled in value in two years, and it is believed thatfor the present fiscal year, end ing next July, there will be another doubling up There has been a large increase in the exports to the Pnilip pines, and this does not include the goods and supplies shipped there for army and navy use The shipment from the Philippines to the United States amounted to more in 1SL9 than they did in 18y7, showing that the in surrection is not previ-nting the com mercial business of the islands from being carried on.
