From all rep Ms tho fusion conven
tion at Nebraska City last Tuesday
was a very warm affair. Some of the
pop delegates got mad and wouldn't
play, leaving the convention hall in a
fit of anger. Fusion is a mighty fine
thing.
Fusionists are not falling over
each other to secure nominations for
county offices this fall. Even the reg
ular standing candidates who enter
the race each ye ip are not anxious for
nomination. Certain defeat stares
them in the f.tce.
The Hvelock Times celebrated its
tenth anniversar3' by issuing a sixteen
page eiution. ihe inside pages were
printed on line paper and were pro
fusely illustrated with half-tone por
traits and scenes about the Burlington
shops ana Havclock residences. A
considerable amount of the reading
matter was devoted to tho railroad
men employed, making the paper
very interestiner. Brother Baughman
is an enterprising publisher and is de-
erving the success with which he is
mooting.
No MAX has had a better oppor

minister to Siam under President
Cleveland. That he has roached his
conclusions, which are favorable to
the cour.-e followed by President Mc
Kinley is shown by a recent statement
over his signature in the "Review of
Reviews," which says, "ray conclus

patient study, because I was lo vth to
believe it, and originally felt and ex
pressed much sympathy for Aguinaldo

It tvkns out that the attacks upon
Pension Commissioner Evans are
largely duo to the fact that he has
dropped from the roll of claim agents
and pension attorneys more than 30,-
000 men. When he came into office
the names of more than 50,000 aTtor
neys wero on the record of the pension
dllce and today the number is 18,491.
Many of these names have been
dropped because of fraudulent prac
tices. The amount paid to the claim
agents last year was $476,900,com pared
with $739,000 in the preceeding year,a
saving of $-'50,100 to the veterans and
loss of that amount to the claim
Hgonts. Heuce, the dissatisfaction of
the agents and the vigor of the tight

$4,500,000 annually to various steam

sending mail to tLe coast of China in
tho shortest space of time; while the

Movement to Erect m Statue Failed.
The movement to erect a statue in
memory of Cromwell at Huntingdon,
England, where he was born, has ig
nomlniously failed. Th nayor of the
borough. Lord Sandwir recently in
formed the town council that of the
subscriptions which had been received
only two reached two figures. These
were the subscription of Lord Ripon
and himself. Independently of these
two sums, the total was under fifty
pounds. Only five dollars had been
raised in America. There was not one
subscriber In the borough of Hunting
don, and only two or three from the
county. About twenty or thirty small
sums had been received In England and
America, and, as the local committee
had done all It could, it was now time,
after four months, to close the matter.
He suggested that the best thing would
be to return the money to the subscrib
ers, and this course was decided upon.
