The I'lattemouth Telephone comany
is making rapid progress in getting
their lino in operation, despite the
cold woather, and have 6omething
like sixty 'phones in operation now.
A description of the workings of the
now system will be of interest to the
readers.
The switch board in use at the cen
tral office i-t cailed the Express and is
the fastest board made for email ex
changes, being large enough to accom
modate 2U0 subscribers. The system
is equipped with long distance trans
mitters and is tho Quest work of the
electrician's art throughout. One of
the points in favor of the board is that
heti a subscriber desires to he con
nected with a certain number one

h ive to wait for the connection to le

being carried through the city and is
tapped at each office or store where a
telephone is placed.
T. H. Ewiug of Topeka, Kan., an
electrician and telephone man of wide
experience is superintendent of con
struction and expects to have the
system completed in a few days. His
wife is assisting him and is acting as
operator until it i9 finished.
The new company now has 130 sub
scribers and is adding new ones all
the time and tho promoters, Messrs.
Pollock and Parmele, have reasons to
feel encouraged for the bright pros
pects of the company's future.

A special train of twelve tourists
cars passed west on the Burlington
yesterday. The cars are en route to
San Francisco to bring back the First
battalion of the First Now York regi
ment of volunteers.
Tho new train 6ignal has arrived
and will be put in place at the Bur
lington depot in a few days.
Dr. C. A. Hull, of the Burlington
relief, Oiraha, was looking after busi
ness at tbe local shops today.
