so on leaving as several beautiful and
valuable gifts were left as testimonials
of tho affections from the gu sts. The

surprise, with the aid of her daughter,

Win. Dodd, a long haired inhabitan
of one of the islands of tho Missouri
river, came to town yesterday ano
hearing of the election going contran
to what ho had expected, attempted to
down his grief in beer and whiskey,
and caused such a disturbance at Do
nat's place that the proprietor called
upon Deputy Sheriff McBride, who
invited him to take a visit to the
county jail, which was immediately
accepted. This morning after a few
terrible dreams. Sir William appeared
before his honor, Judge Archer, who
gavo him one dollar and trimmings,
and the docket had a charge of Win.

The Picture of Lewis Cass.
When the court house was built and
dedicated, Hon. J. Sterling Morton
presented to Cass couaty, to ba hung
iu the district courtroom, a picture of
Hon. Lewis Cass, and whioh has
graced the wail behind the judge's
stand until the last spring when it
was replaced by a paintinjrwhieh means
nothing, yet it was intended to re
present a masterpiece.
The Cass county b tr together with
others have petitioned the commis
sioners to have tho picture of Hon.
Lewis Cass r placed and thus to re
main as a historio relic of Cass county.
The commissioners have so ordered
and tba portrait of the name-sake of
Car-s will grace our district courtroom
walls again.
The ladie's of the Presbyterian
church have something unique in the
course of preparation for December 11
and 12. More extended notice will be
sriven later on.

of Mr. and Mrs. F. II. Slempker. gave
them a very pleasant surprise at their
residence oa South Sixth street.
Games and social conversation were
indulgad in until a late hour, when
all departed declaring they had bad a
vory pleasant time. A silver cracker
bowl was presented to Mrs. Stenpkar.

The Christian Social.
The ladies of the Christian church
gave a social and oyster supper in one
of the rooms in the Wettenkancp block
last night for the benefit of tae church

joyable time was had. The receipts
were something over twenty dollars.
County Superintendent Farley yes
terday decided tho school district ques
tion whioh has been on tho tapis for
some time, where it was sought to
create a new district out of No. 2, the
Horning bchool, and No. o the Rock
Bluffs school. The new district asked
in tho petition would have reduced
the assessed valuation of property re
maining in Rock Bluffs district to less
than $1,200, which wou'd h ive been
contrary to law, as the statute pre
scribes that no raw district shall ba
formed or one divided when tho as
sessed valuation is less than tne abeve
stated amount.
