"I saw n curious method used the
other day in this county to take foul
air out of a well. The well was to be
cleaned, but the man that took the job
w;.s afraid to go down until he hal
ascertained the quality of the air at
the bottom.
He let down a lighted candle, and
when it descended to ubout six feet of
the bottom it went out as suddenijr as
though extirguished by a whiff of air.
lie was then sure that the well had
poisonous gas iu it, and took a small
umbrella, tiod a string to the haudle
and lowered it open into the well.
Having lowered it nearly to the bot
tom, he drew it up, carried it a few
feet from the well and u'jset it. lie
repeated this operation twenty or
thirty times, with all the bystanders
j Uughiuj at him; tkwu hin k Uwr-
ed the light, which burned clear and
! bright even at the bottom. lie then
j condescended to explain that the gas
in the well was carbonic acid gas,
which is heavier than air, and there
fore could be carried just as though it
wore so m uch water. It was a simple
trick, yet perfectly effective." .Ne

Council l'eocttetliiiga,
1 he city council met in adjourned
session last night, all members pres
ent with Mayor Ilichey presiding.
Minutes of former meeting read and
approved. The Nebraska Telephone
Co gave a report of the line which
they wished to follow, and the same
was placed on file. The city treasurer
reported 87,2o7.(i7 on hand.
Consid erable discussion was in
dulged in about the telephone muddle
and a resolution was passed endorsing
tho injunction. .suit and declaring the
intention of the council to fight it out
in the courts unless the old company
should conclude to take out a fran
chise. Mayor Richey stated that he
thought the Nebraska Telephone Co.
was goiDg to ask for "a fronchise, and
was surprised that nothing of the kind
had been done. Several side Wt'ilk
resolutions were passed. The roof of
the gas holder was ordered repaired,
and the sewers in the alley back of the
Fit.ge -aid block were ordered low
ered. After the allowence of claims,
which will be printed tomorrow the
