The M. V. A. lo.lo at Louisville,
and adjoining camps, held a picnic
'J'ues-ilay in a line jjrovo north of
Louisville and the (lay was highly en

their friends. The grounds were pro
vided with an abundance of comfort
able seats, krood stands furnished
plenty of refreshments, the Spriiiirliold
cornet hand and a lar yo e horus of local
sinyers put in their best endeavors to

limit, republican candidate for county
attorney, and K.J. Kurkett, candidate
for contrros, delivered able addresses
and a yame of ball between the Louis
ville and an Omaha team were the
features of amusement and entertain
nient. Theirame resulted in a victory
for Omaha by a score of I; to 4.
The pitcher for the Omaha team
was a furlouyhed U. S. soldier who
took pa' t in the Santiago campaign.
While he carried evidence upon his
body of the work of tho deadly Mauser,
yet he had sufficiently recovered from
his wounds as to be able to pitch a
rood yame of ball and prove quite a
drawing card, a s every body was anxi

From Wednesday's I'iiily
Con fjivs.-HKiii Samuel Max ,. o. i, o!
Fremont, arrived in tho city at noun
to look after his landed iuleiests in
this vicinity. In a brief intet viow,
whi.o the distinguished statesman and
jurist was very reticent as to his turn
ing down by the sluto makers in tho
late triangle congressional conven
tion in lhe Third dislrict, Lbe reporter
could read between tho lines suffi
ciently to see that tho honorable gen
tleman felt keen disappointment at
the way he had been treated, by the
wire pullers of his district. Judge
Maxwell is one of the noblest and
ablest men in the etato, whom tho
populist part- should feel honored to
honor and his turning down moans
much for republican success in the
Third district this fall.

Off on Furlough.
From Wednesday's Daily
Ed. J. Stretght, a member of the
Second Nebraska rejriment, arrived
iu the city today at noon from Chick
am intra. Having; received a brief fur
lough. Mr. St:-eight says the regi
ment will airive at Fort Omaha about
Sunday, the war department having
issued orders to that eH'eei. lie re-jiort-iit
lea-l Ui percent of the regi
ment on the sick list, owing pnnci
ci pally to the excessive hot weather.
The bo s were anxious to see service,
and are considerably disappointed
that they we e rot permitted t do so,
hut much prefer to come homo to lying-

spetiK. He will visit his parents here
a few days.
An I miniise Crop
Homegrown grapes are commenc
in to pour into this market, and the
price starts out at triree cents oer
pound, with prospects that they will
soon be down to one cent, if not lower.
Thee: en t! is year is imm. use and the
f i -nit sound ar d luscious as was ever
g-town in any ci untry. c Mr. Peter
I'iit-, one of our heaviest growers es
timates his yield this season at 30.000
pounds. C K. Sage will have from
1", (i(ii) to 'Jo. ooo pounds. H.C McMaken
e.OHl to 4,0(i0, and innumerable smaller
growers will help to supply this mar
ket and thaf of surrounding and less
fortunate com ir un i ties.
Another New Store.
Mr. C. E. Holmes, an enterprising
young business man from Omaha, has
rented C. J. Martin's store building,
formeny occupied by Tucker sisters
millinery store, and will about Sep
tember 1 open therein a large and
complete stock of books and stationery.
He will move here with his family
and occupy the rooms above the store
for dwelling. Platlsmouth is rapidly
tilling up with live nusiness men and
there is now but one empty store
building in the city. This speaks well
for IMattemouth.
