Upon landing at Valdios, I saw tho
passengers wading water knee deep.

trio trail I havo soon men blooding at
tho n os 5 caused by hauling too heavy
loads, a so men rupture themselves
from tho same cause. 1 havo seen
men -r.ing like children because they
eou'.d not keep up their end of the
worlc, others because they were snow
blind and were afraid they would nev
er bo able to see again; saw one of the
worst snow storms I can remember of,
lasting eight days. On tho seventh,
or on tho evening of ttio seventh day,
a snow slide at tho foot of the summit
caused the dt ath of two men that I
know of, and probably more, it was
also the cause of a groat many losing
part of t heir outfit, by its being buried
in the snow; havo also seen men loso
their outfit in tho river by being up
set, and some of them nearly losing
their lives
I saw a man who had killed a tame
goat and thought it was a wild one,
but he knows better now. I attended
an auction sale, and saw goats sell for
loss money th in they wore bought for,
while some o them sold at a great
profit, and I have eeo men climbing
up a mountain, come near losing their
footing, and if they had would proba
bly boon killed, and I have seen men
shoot the rapids with safety, while
othors havo loit their all the rapids
are a sight to see; they keep up a con
stant roar and run at the rate of
eighteen miles an houi, and are very
dangerous to travel, as the stream is
filled with large boulders and Bnags.
Tho brother of Chas Giteau, who
killed James A. Garfield, is on this
trail. I talked With M'osars. Poarce
and Haines, two of the party that
tried and hung Doc Tnnner, and got
the full particulars of the case. Mr.
Haines was tho third party that Tan
ner shot at in the. tent. I attended a
minors' meeting, which wa-3 called to
adjust a dilTeronco between aom par
ties that wero going back to the
stat- s.
I havo seen men crippled by the side
of the trail and not a soul to help
them; have spoken timo and time
again to parties that I havo met on
tho trail and not got an answer, or if
they did at all it would only be agrunt.
During our stay on the summit I
have seen parties start out on the trail
and get lost in a snow storm and only
a part of them return; and havo seen
large, able bodied men lay down or
tho snow and cry and curse the coun
try, ami I have scon men wrap them
selves up in blankets and lay down in
snow beside their packs anu sleep as
comfortably as if they were in a warm
bed; know of men that were in their
tents for ten days to two weeks sick:
without a fire; men that have died on
this trail have merely been buried in
snow and ice, some in the gravel on
the creek bottoms, but I think it would
bo a hard job to lind them now. It is
a shamo it is awful for a party of men 1
to come to a place like this, and when
x metnbor of their party gets sick to
desert him and leave him to do for him
self; this I have seen many times, and
have went into some of their tents
and talked with the sick for an hour
and have heard their story some of
their stories would make a book. One
man, a lawyer from St. Louis, was suf
fering from liright's disease, and a
party of s;x, 4is camped on tho Third
bench and I vj;nt in to see him. 1'
learned that his partner had loft hirm
and gone to tho Fourth b-noh. He:
told mo he was going t dio and ttuv
nothing could be done for him. I
tried to cheer him ui and made him
soino gruel and he ate a little of it, m
I kepi a good iir while tho wood,
histed, tind sent word lo his partners
to o-me back. Two of them cr. me, but
they did not seem to like it about
their wo.id being burned, and they
swore a little which made the sick
man vo-r uneasv. Two days later he;
died, and was buried in tne snow on i
the Thi u bench, and his partners did
nrt seem to caro ver y much. The fact
of tho matter is that a'l. or nearly all,,
are anxious to reach the head waters.
I have learned that the two men
that wero killed in the slides and
buried on t hi3 side, that tho bodies
have boon washed up and carried
down the Copper river, but I do not
think there would be much of them,
left after passing the rapids.
Charley is well, in faot all of us are
well. I am in tho best physical condi
tion that I have been in for years.
