II EN ky T. OxSAHD is very fearful
of competition from abroad and can
taik against imperialism with better
zest than Mr. Bryan, for he is the
beet sugar king and he fears that his
profits m:iy be wiped out by Cuban
and Hawaiian competition, when the
two countries come in under the A mer
ican flajr on the same footing as other
states and territories of the union.
We have never thought of a tariff
against Kansas to keep her corn out
of the markets, for when she had a
big crop of corn, she sent the money
back for something she did not raise.
People who are not owning beet sugar
factories are not worrying about com
petition among ourselves, and if Cuba
raises our sugar, she will eat our
breadstutTs to offset it and furnish us
a big market with money to pay for
what she wants.
A RESULT OF OUR TARIFF.
The long advertised German com
mercial war has begun, and it takes
the form of an invasion. A compan7
of German steel manufacturers has
concluded that the btst way to compete
with us is to be one of us, and has
begun the construction of a ereat
plant near Chicago. For its sake we
hope the kaiser will not shut its pro
duct out of Get many. We can stand
this sort of a war splendidly. A great
m -my Germans have invaded this
country before now, and we like them.
