Three voluminous documents were
filed with County Judge Spurlock to
day, by County Attorney Graves.
Lewis Bird, a- well-to-do farmer, and
representative citizen living near Un.
ion, is the complaining witness, and
the complaints are against James Mc
Lood, Wm. Wolfe, M. L. Thomas, and
C. F. Davis, all of Union, and they are
charged with selling liquor without
license.
McLeod has been running a saloon
in Union for several years, according
to law, but this year he ha9 been run
ning a "club room," and tho com
plaint alleges sailing liquor without
license. There are 195 counts in the
complaint against McLeod, charging
him with selling whiskey to various
partita at vaiious times.
Wolfe & Thomas is a drug firm in
Union, and the complaint therein al
leges that they have teen soiling
liquor without a druggist's permit,
c unary to law. There are eighteen
counts in this information, making the
same allegations as in the complaint
p gainst McLood.
C, F. Davis is also a druggist, and
in his case tho complaint sets forth
the same allegations as in that of
Wolfe & Thomas, only that there are
seventy-seven counts against him,
while only eighteen are laid to the
former.
Warrants were issued for the arrest
of the parties and the seizure of any
of theliquors found in their posses
sion. Deputy McBride went to Union
today to serve the papers, and is ex
pected to arrive this evening with the
accused iu charge. They will be ad
mitted to bail tonight and a day set
for hearin? of the cases in the near
future.
The reporter in conversation with a
representative farmer in the vicinity
of Union, and who is indirectly a party
to the prosecutiou of these cases,
learned that the business of selling
liquor at Union has been running very
loose for some time past, aod it is the
determination of a large number of
the better class of citizens that it shall
cease, or else the dealers must comply
strictly with the law.
lie stales that liquor has been sold
to minors, habitual drunkards and
there has been little or no regard
shown for public sentiment or for the
peace of the cummunity by parties
consuming the tangle foot. The cases
will have to be heard.count by count
each court muKing a separate case
and a long legal contest is sure to
follow, which will prove very expen
sive to the defendants.
Greenwood District Cleaned l:p.
Probably the largest purchase of
broom corn ever made in one day in
Nebraska was made by Clinton R.
Lee, in Cass county, Friday. This
district is known by broom corn buyers
as the Greenwood district. The fol
lowing crops were purchased by Mr.
Lee for the Lee Broom and Duster
company that day:

Making a total of about 253. tons,
the value of which at the lowest
wholesale price, is fully $10,000. The
quality of broom corn raised in this
district is line and green and equal to
Illinois central, which is considered
the best grown. There is not a single
crop left iu the county and only a few
scattering crops of poor quality in the
state. From all appearances the Ne
braska farmer who raises a choice crop
of broom corn this summer will get a
good round price for it this fall, as
there has never been a time in live
years when the crop was bought up as
cleaa as it is today. The price paid
was $50 a ton for the best quality.

precinct in the district has a candidate
for Hayes' chair, and unless there is a
drop of some candidate the comings
convention will witness a pretty con
test. Tis rumored that "Old -Tipton"
has three men anxious for the place,
the most prominent being mentioned
and urged by his friends is the name
of Jonathan Adam.
"Feelers" are being thrown out to
find just how we west-enders are feel
ing in regard to the county legisla
tive ticket. 'Tis mentioned that the
young statesman of Nehawka would
like a promotion. Tn that event there
would be a contest between the west-
enders and Plattsimuth for a repre
sentative. Again, there is a little
talk of Judge Newell being placed for
state senator, while Jesse Root's friends
are not a bit less timid in dem tndins'
a hearing. And thus it goes, some
