the cleanest, squarest democrats that
could have been pitted against him.
EVEN the Pine Ridge Indians are
patriotic and offer to enlist against
Spain and fight for the Stars and
Stripes. Our Col. Kroehler at the
head of a company of Sioux would be
invincible, let the war go on.
TnE great state of New York which
could whip Spain single handed has
appropriated one million dollars as a
war fund. .Ohio has favored a similar
appropriation and if the treacherous
Spaniards thinK Uncle Sam's family
is not united let them proceed.
The municipal elections throughout
the state show surprising republican
gains everywhere, Good citizens must
recognize in these victories the fate
that will befall the worst state admin

The boodlers will nave to go. Judge
Hayward, A. E. Cady or lien Baker

Some cringing today, who wisely
conceals his identity, writes to a mug

this country needs is a -Oud thrash

that the thrashing process should be

His anxiety to disturb the harmony

the men employed at the shops on
account of his dislike for some of the
prominent employes of the company,
is seen to have done him no good.

Foreign capital continues to flow
into the United States in the interests
of American workmen uDder the
operations of the Dingley protective
tariff. Silk factories are being estab
lished through New England and
Pennsylvania, many of them taking
the places of the cotton mills re
moved farther south. A representa
tive of a Swiss silk-manufacturing
firm, which employs 32,000 persons,
has recently visited this country, in
specting three large manufacturing
establishments which bis firm is
operating here, and says frankly that
the Dingley law has proved advan
tageous to the silk manufactories
which that great concern now owns
in the United States. His firm,
Schwarzabach, Huber & Co., has
located three of its eight great estab

the protective tariff system now in
operation and is distributing enorm
ous sums of money to the working
people in this country. Ex.

Tho war of western roaas over rates

not only busines betweeu KanBiis City

half cents from Kansas City, and
would apply tho same rates from
sioux City. Tho Alton announced a

Tho Wisconsin Central published a

Some funny things, says an ex

FIRING ON THE MOB.
The Scene After the Death Dealing Voile)
Had Done Its Work.
The yelling mass below neared the
walls. A whistle pierced the tumult.
From the windows jetted swift lines of
flame, and a shattering volley tore the
air.
A crash, and then ttillness on the
mob, an intense bush, a swift paralysis;
a bine gray snioko cloud fiqated up the
walls and out over the jailyard. Men
gasped, then held their breath. From
their nests in the eaves startled ppar
rows flew above the crowd with fright
ened twitterings.
In the jail corridor sounded the clink,
clink of empty shells falling to the fiooi
as nervous fingers fumbled at boxes oi
shoved fresh cartridges home with a
Bnap snapping of breechblocks, while
staring eyes were fixed upon the scene
outside.
From below came a new sound, the
noise of agony. On the outskirts of the
crowd men were running. The mob
surged back from the jail walls. In the
space left clear lay prostrate forms out
stretched or huddled in attitudes of gro
tesque horror on the stone paved way,
One figure half arose, wavered back
ward and then fell toward the retreat
ing mob with a gasping cry. Men run
ning back from the crowd with appre
heusive glances at the windows carried
off the limp forms. In the crowd men
bore up other men who reeled and stag
gered to and fro.
The corridor was very still. The
guard stood in silence. Here and there
one drew a long breath, with a slow
heaving of the chest and a lifting of the
shoulders. Turning their eyes with an
effort from the mob, they glanced at
each other as though seeking confirma
tion for their thoughts, to be assured
that all tbis thing had happened, that
the dark forms on the pavement below
had been a grim reality. A slight, pale
faced private threw his rifle to the floor
and turned his face from the window,
with a burst of shuddering sobs. Others
swore apparently at nothing and busied
themselves with their weapons. No one
paid any heed to the private who wept
except that his next rank man stooped
and picked up his rifle. The smell of
burned powder hung in the air. II. II.

Doghouses and Doe Kennels.
Doghouse is the name applied to a
house made for a dog to live in out of
doors; dog kennel to a house or box
built for a dog's quarters indoors. The
doghouse is likely to be for a big dog;
the kennel, in private houses, for a lit
tle dog. There are few doghouses used
in the city, and in proportion to the
number of pet dogs not a great many
kennels, but still the number of kennels
in the aggregate is considerable.
Doghouses are made with a sloping
roof to shed rain. No such necessity ex
ists in the case of the kennel, and ken
nels are always made with a flat top,
Things may be placed on top of them.
The kennel is practically an oblong box
made of yellow or white pine or of
whitewood, and customarily painted
white and without ornamentation. The
kennel has a grated opening in the top
for purposes of ventilation, with a cover
to put over to prevent draft. Former
ly the doors of such kennels were made
of wire cloth; now they are all made
with bars of a very small sized gas pip
ing.
The kennel of this kind Is so made
that it is raised at the corners enough
to make the bottom clear the floor, and
it ia often mounted on casters, so that
it can be conveniently moved about
from room to room. Such kennels are
made by carpenters, and they cost $5 to
1 10 each, acoording to the size. New
York Snn.
What "Goes" on the Yukon.
In The Century there ia an article on
"The River Trip to the Klondike,"
written by John Sidney Webb. Mr,
Webb eays:
Alaska is a country of more square
miles than square meals, and the legend
ary governor of North Carolina would
have found little else but muddy Yukon
water, assaying 50 percent solids to the
liquid ton, in which to quench bis cele
brated thirst. "Do as you please" is the
motto. In civilization coats are worn
for various reasons, "on the Yukon"
because it blows up cold or rains. Nap
kins, tablecloths, sheets and pillows do
not "go" on the Yukon, or have not
heretofore. Even the Klondike million
aire packs his blankets and takes what
be can get.
