About six months ago the Philadel
phia mngizino started to publish a
series of practical architectural plans,
showing how artistic houses could be
built at moderate cost. It employed a
special architect, and his work was
certainly artislic. Besides the olans
it agreed to furnish complete specifi
cations of each house at a minium cost.
Thousands of people liked the plans
Kiven and tho series has been a great

Prof. E. A. Fox, superintendent cf

Fred Jordan and family, who lost
everything by the fire last night
except the scanty raiment they wore,
have purchased new furniture and
will move into the house west of the
Riley hotel today. Mr. Jordan's loss
is a severe one for him. but he is for
tunate in having enough insurance to
cover about half of it.
Otto Wurl, the manufacturer of the
famous "Gut Heil" cigar, is a hustler
for business, -He recently had some
very handsome cloth signs painted
which he has just put up about town
and he has also increased his force of
cigar makers. Several times lately
be has been unable to fill his orders
as fast as they were received. He
will keep right on increasing his
force, however, so that he can supply
the growing demand for his goods.
Mrs. Harriet MacMurphy of Om tba
who has of late achieved honors as a
culinary artist, came in this morning
and is the guest of her sister, Mrs.
James Pettee. She will lecture before
the Woman's club tonight, and no
doubt her old friends will fill tho hall
to overflowing. Mis. McMurphy Is a
ready writer and has been prominent
as a Nebraska Journalist for years,
having assisted her husband on the
old Herald in this city and helping to
make it the best county paper in the
state.
INFORMATION AND OPINIONS.
Two English concerns which re
cently completed plans for lighting
the city of Malaga, Spain, with
electricty have been compelled to send
to the United States for the re
quisite plant?. After having vainly
tried to obtain what they needed in
Great Britain, they have finally sent
their orders to Pittsburg. Thus the
American product has gained another
victory, winch has been properly re
cognized and commented upon by our
consul at Malaga. Ex.
The telegraph office at Wyoming,
Otoe county, on the Missouri Pacific,
has been re-established, says the Au
burn Post. It has been closed for
about two years, but the recent im
provement in business on that part of
the line was sufficient to warrant the
change. Will our demo-pop friends
take the above as an evidence of re
turned prosperity or did Mark Hanna
do it?
Mrs. Pittman received the certifi
cate for $3,000 from the Modern Wood
men of America, Thursday of last
week, that being the amount of insur
ance her husband, the late J. H. Pitt
man, was carrying in that order. Ti
was received just two weeks after the
day tbat Mr. Pittman was buried,
which shows prompt work on the part
of the officials. Nehawka Register.
Gen. L. W. Colby of Beatrice passed
through the city last evening enroute
to Iowa, says the Nebraska City News.
He say that his boy came home Tues
day night, having been goue eight
days, and with $2.50 visited Nebraska
City, Rulo and all the small stations
along the lina The boy has had all
of the touring that he wants for sev
eral years and promised not to try the
experiment again.
C. V. Hay is our new Nasby, he hav
ing taken possession of the postoffice
yesterday, says the Weeping Water
Republican. If Charly makes as good
a postmaster as I. F. Travis has, and
we believe he will, there will be no
cause for complaint. Mr. Travis has
made h most excellent official for the
past four years and two months and
his friends will all hope that he and
his family may remain in Weeping
Water.
O. C. Hoham, of Greenwood, an old
friend of ours whom we had not seen
in eight or ten years, had business
here Monday, and dropped in at this
office for a chat. When we knew Mr.
Hoham he was in the hardware busi
ness, but he has 6ince gone to farming
and he say3 he wouldn't go back into
business for any thing. Weeping
