The county commissioners are In
monthly session, and have transacted
considerable business already.
The poor farm contract was let to
A. L. Todd, ho being the lowest bid
der. There were three bidders
Todd at $050, H. P. Dean at $780, and
Klmer Eikenbary at $000. Todd's bid
being $10 lower than Eikenhary's was
the one accepted.
The' contract for burying paupers
was let to Straight & Satt'.or. That
firm and J. I. Unruh both put in bids
that were identical. They drew lota
to see who should have the plum, and
it fell to btrelsht & Sattler.
County physicians were appointed
in the different districts as follows:
first district, Dr. E. D. Cummins;
third district, Dr. M. M. Butler;fourth
district, J. A. Hassemeier; fifth dis
trict, Dr. J. M. Neeley; sixth district,
J. B. Tamblin. The bids from the
second district were all rejected.
The voting place in Greenwood
precinct was changed from section 15
to the town of Alvo.
This afternoon the commissioners
decided to have the walls and ceiling
of the basement and the upper floor of
the court house painted, and awaided
the contract to Louis Ottnat for $700.
This is a durable and much needed
improvement that will preserve and
beautify the walls of the court house
for an indefinite period. One of the
advantages of the oil finish is that it
cau be washed whenever necessary.
INFORMATION AM) OPINIONS.
The beautiful new government
building at, Omaha, now nearing com
pletion, is to have a clock with illumi
nated dial in the tower to cost over
$3,000.
The press dispatches are full of the
details of how an Omaha plunger and
real estate promotor named Grable
got the confidence of Cashier Quinlan
of the Chemical National bank of New
York and secured the remarkable sum
of $390,000 without giving any security
of value therefor. Grable is the fel
low that built up the town of Edge
mont and interested prominent peo
ple from the east in smelters and
factories in the town. Quinlan has
resigned a position he has held for
thirty-six years, and Grable, if he ha.8
not hoarded the money and not blown
it in on speculations, can live like a
prince the balance of his days.
HOW IT LOOKS TO "JIM."
The Rock Bluff confusion demo-pop

sounding name of the "patriots of
America," have succeeded in roping
in a few ignorant republicans, and if all
reports are true, the boss patriot has
a hard time herding his conrusion
flock at their weekly meetings on Fri
day nights. This organization claims
to be secret, and of a very patriotic
nature, but if all reports are true of
the high old time that they have at
thtir meetings, there is not very
much that is secret about it, and it is
the opinion of Jim that dissolution
has already set in.
They object very much to being
called a Bryan club, but want to be
called the patriots of America, but
their composition gives them away,
for their charter members were all
demo pops and sixteen to "wunners."
This organization is the one started
by W. II. Harvey of Chicago, the
writer of "Coin's Financial School,"
and in the opinion of Jim, is one of
the most stupendous, concentrated
schemes of political financial rascality
that has ever been organized. While
Bryan is getting rich, and will soon
be a millionaire, by fooling people
with his mouth, at from two to five
hundred dollars for a blow-off, Mr.
Harvey starts out by organizing a se
cret political party.
And the concentration begins here.
The constitution of the order provides
that the national patriot shall - be
elected for four years, and that he
6hall appoint the national recorder
and treasurer. The state aDd county
organizations are constructed in the
same way. Mr. Harvey is the national
patriot, and will be the sole distri
butor of all national funds, for section
five, page ninety-seven of the book
entitled "The Patriots of America,"
reads as follows: "All money or prop
erty belonging to the first national
patriot for the benefit of the order shall
be expended as he may direct."
So, according to the constitution
which every member takes an oath to
support and for which each one is ex
pected to contribute financially to
support, Mr. Harvey is given the sole
privilege to expend the fund for the
benefit of the order, or he can put it
down in his own pocket for the benefit
of W. H. Harvey.
When P. T. Barnum said that the
American people liked to be hum
bugged he stated a fact that is too
true; and the greater the humbug the
more readily the ignorant and poorly
informed take nold of it. Jim.

The crew on Burlington train No. 12
had an exciting time with bums be
tween Ashland and Omaha last even
ing. In attempting: to put a fellow off
of the train the brakeman was thrown
off and the engineer, taking him for a
member of the gang,pulled out and left
him. The conductor missed him after
they had gone about a mile and the
train was backed up and he was
picked up. Armour trok a gang of fel
lows up to Memphis a few days ago to
cut ice and it seems a number of them
went on a strike and were making a
grand hustle to get back to Omaha.

Two intelligent looking bloodhounds
arrived last night by express from
Vermont, billed to S. M. Melick, chief
detective. A company was formed for
the purpose of securing a couple of
experienced dogs. Detective Melick
will have the general management
and Detective Pound will care for and
run the doss. One of the dogs is
pupped by "She," nolding the world's
record as a bitch for man-hunting and
is sired by the famous dog "Bruff,"
who carried off the greatest prizes in
this country. The dogs are both well
trained and highly recommended.

basement of theBrownell block, under
the sidewalk. State Journal.
New Time Card.
The new time card which goes into
effect on the B. & M. Sunday makes
but slight changes here. The two
trains No. 1, which passes here at
12:18 p. m., going west, and No. 6 going-e;st
at 12:41 a. m. are scheduled
not 10 Btop at this point. The only
change in time of departure of other
trains is in No. 8, which reaches here
at 12:30 instead of 12:28.
