The worst featuro of the fire was the
fact thai a horse, cow and some pigs
in the barn were literally burned
alive, right in sight of the people who
were powerless to stop their horrible
sufferings. The stable was insured
for $100, so that the los9 will be
partly covered. The firo seemed to
have been the ronu.lt of an incendiary,
as no fire bad bteti sven in the building.

We clip the following from the
Atchison Globe, which may prove of
interest to many old time Plattsmouth
friends:
"The funeral of the late Rev. W. I.
Cutter will take place at 2 p. m. to
morrow. The services will be held at
the Kansas avenue M. E. church and
the burial will take place at Oak Hill
cemetery. While Mr. Cutter was for
many years an English Lutheran mis
sionary and minister, he had of late
years worshiped with the Methodists.
IJe was born in Germany in 1820 and
came to America with his parents at
the age of eight, settling at Louis
ville, Kentucky. In 1851, Rev. Cutter
went as a missionary of the Lutheran
church, to Madras, India, instead of
Africa, as was stated yesterday. He
took a sailing vessel which rounded
the Cape of Good Ilope, Africa, and
was on the sea for six months. His
experiences there were interesting. He
returned to America in 18o6 on ac
count of his wife's health, and served
churches in New York and Pennsyl
vania, and came west in 1857, locating
at Plattsmouth, Neb., but stayed only
a few years, when he returned to Penn
sylvania, and came west again in 1878,
and preached at Monrovia and Valley
Falls. His first sermon in Atchison
was preached in 1879. Besides a
widow, he leaves live children, .three
sons and two daughters, all of whom
are grown. Two children of the de
ceased, Mrs. Henry Waterbury and VV.
E. Cutter, were born in India, and are
now residents of Atchison."

Alercer Win Open Ant Month.
The following iu regard to the open
ing of the Mercer hotel in Omaha, is
taken from this morning's issue of the
World-Herald:
"Arrangements were completed yes
terday whereby "Dick" Smith will
open the Mercer hotel February 1, as
manager for F. J. Coates. Mr. Smith
has had some years of experience as
hotel manager and is well Known all
over the west. The house! will be
thoroughly overhauled, repapered
and p anted and new furniture added.

rightful successor of Eugene Field

Field ever did, and is a royal fellow

Nansen, the north pole searcher, is
making a barrel of money out of his
lecture tour. He is greeted every
where with crowded bouses, and at
St. Paul 10,000 people went in a body
to meet him. The polar business may
bo a little chilly at first, but its a hot
proposition later on when the money
rolls in by the bucketful. He will be
in Omaha Tuesday next and lectures
there Tuesday night.
The Nebraska Farmer is one of the
very best agricultural papers pub
llked and should be read byeveiy
farmer in the state. It has been
moved from Lincoln to Omaha and is
being improved so that it takes front
rank. Tho subscription price is only

Bert Crawford's little son, who has

fever, died last night. Mr. Crawford
is in South Omaha and funeral ar
rangements will not be perfected un

Green needs sunlight to develop the
yellow in it and make it seem cheerful
Rod brings out in a room whatever
hint of a green lurks in the composi
tion of tho other colors emploj-ed.
If olivo or rod brown bo used in con
junction with mahogany furniture the
effect is very different from what it
would be if blue were used. Blue
would develop the tawny orange in
the mahogany.
If a ceiling is to be made higher
leave it light, that it may appear to
recede. Deepening the color used on
the ceiling would make it lower an
effect desirable if the room is small
and the ceiling very high. Various
tones of yellow are substitutes for sun
light. If a bright, sunny room gets its light
from a space obtruded upon by russet
color or yellow painted houses, or else
looks out upon a stretch of green grass,
it should be decorated in a color very
different from tne shade chosen if the
light comes from only an unbroken ex
panse of sky.
The thermometer seems to fall six
degrees when you walk into a blue
room. Yellow is an advancing color:
therefore, a room fitted up in yellow
will appear smaller than it is. On
the other hand, blue of a certain
shade introduced generously will give
an idea of space. Red makes no dif
ference in regard to size. Green
