short of powder for his hitrh power
guns. After his war shins have fired
away with tho powder they have on
board, which they would do in tho
course- of a ten hours' battle, there
wou d bo left in the entire country
barely enough to supply them for a
thirty-minute combat. And it would
tako the powder mills of the United
States, with their present facilities,
nearly a year to p oduce enough pow
der to supply the ships for another ten
hours' battle. Such is the substance
of a report made to Socretary Long
by tho board of ordinanco and fortifi
citions, wh'cb. " recommended tho
immediate uildi i ' of a government
powder factory . ly wh ' h tho cost of
supplying this pu..rc uld bo greatly
reduced. Ordinary powder, it must
bo understood, will not do for high
power guns. There is plenty of this
and plenty of fine blasting powder in
the country, but very littlo riflo can
non powder. This last is made by
only two factories in tho United
States, one in Delewaro and one in
California, both of them of very lim
ited capacity'. Ilenco tho importance
of having in store enough to meet all
possiblo demands of war until more
could bo offered.
Has a Trottiujj Moose.
A domesticated trotting moose was
received at the transfer last evening
vnd taken out of the car for feeding
and exorcise, says the Oranha Bee.
The animal came from Montana,
where it was captured about four
months ago. The beast was young
and quickly domesticated, ltj owner
poon accustomed it to drivo in harness
and was astonished to discover that it
had extraordinary speed qualities and
was able to make a record of 2:15 on
the regular track. The animal is in
care of Mr. Woods, and he is under
contract to deliver it to Detroit, where
it will be entered in the spiing races.
fhe moose is a handsome and gigantic
fellow, as proud and highstrung as
the best thoroughbred race horse, and
is extremely docile. His trainer says
he enters into the spirit of a race with
all of the zest and fire of the veteran
track horse. Ho is a square trotter
and never makes a break from the
start to tho finish, ile will be at the
transfer during the gretter part of
the day today, and will no doubt re
ceive many visitors.
Captures a IWnin.
Henry Guthm n ought to join Bar-
num's show as an expert, he having
caught all kinds of animals. This
morning he had a trap set down on
the river front for rabbits and when
he went down hoping to see a cottoc
tail, he discovered a live possum had
been landed. Henry was not up or
possum literature sind did not know
but what he had captured a cinn?mon
bear or hyena. After securing assist
ance, tho animal was taken to the
hotel, where Henry will add it to his
museum of natural history.

Claus Brekonfeld was in town today
and he savs the Louisville Roller
Miils will be completed in about four
weeks and that tho verv latest
machinery is being put in, which will
make it the best in this part of the
state. Tom Parmele and Charley
Richey are the owners of the new mill.

as miller it will bo a success from the
start, and will bo a valued addition
to Cass county's thriving listof grow
ing industries.

Clinton Grant, a nine-year-old boy
of Hayes Center, was seriously in
jured by a horse falling on him. When
found he was unconscious and is sup
posed to bo lying in that condition for
several hours.

gant dinner was served. Tho home

oepted an invitation ftom the Wo
man's club to deliver a lecturo on
''What Is Being Done in the Pub ic
Schools of Our City." This lecture
will tako the place of tho regular
program for Friday evening and the

are interested in the educational pro
gress of the city to be present. Pro
fessor Mellugh is an interesting
f-peaker and most enthusiastic along
