Three days ago tuo night manager
in charge of the oHice at Forty-.ev-enth
street and Madinon avenue, was
t.iken ill and Hraden, a clerk of tho
company for rnoro than ten years, was
substituted. This olliee the company
uses as a clearing house for all its
matter sent from tho (J rand Central
station.
Among tho parcels to be sent tin tho
0:10 train on tho Hudson Iliverroad
wero several containing cash to the
amount of $5,-r)82 and one containing
five $1,000 Chicago gas bonds. It was
Bradon's place to take theso packages
to the train, return to the olliee and
remain until 7 o'elocK.
When tho day employes arrived
Biadon was not in tho office.' The
safe was locked. Thoro was no re
ceipts for valuable packagos by tho
morning train, although the books
showed that several such parcels hd
been received at the office.
At first the absence of IJraden and
tho receipts were set down to careless
ness. But a few minutes later the
leather bags which had cont lined the
valuables were found. They had bnen
cut open and the money and bonds
taken.
That the robbery was hastily ca rried
out is shown by the fact that $21,0(10,
mostly in cash, was left in tho safe
and that the bonds wero taken.
Notices were sent to every bank and
financial institution in the country
warning them against purchasing the
stolen gas bonds. These bonds have
a face value of $5,000, but are worth in
other markets $5,S50. They are for
$1,000 each, issued in 18!(J and bearing
. per cont interest. They are num
bered 1G03, 1827, 2850, 4000 and 4101.
Branden ab)ut three years ago left
the company's employ to go west and
for a time was a fish dealer in Oregon.
Last summer he returned to New
York.
Chicago, Jan. 0. Tho Chicago po
lice were requosted this evening by
the I'inkerton agency to apprehend
Clark Braden, jr., the absconding
night clerk of the American Express
company in the New York office. In
stead of a $1,000,000 robbery, as
rumored at first, the loss suffered by
the express company through the
clerk's disMppearance, the Pinkertons
allege, is $30,000. According to the
statement mado by tho detective
agency of the amount taken by Braden
$25,000 was in currency, consisting of
fifty $500 bills and five $1,000 gold
bonds of the Consumers' Giis company
of Chicago.

Henry Boeclc insists that he and
Chet Smith are as prime a job lot of
suckers as ever ran against a gold
brick. The trouble all comes of their
buying two gas machines and some
territory, which they were going to
make a thousand dollars a month out
of. The cost of running the machines
is enough to build a gas plant, hence
they are not a booming success.

visiting with her sister, returned to
her home in Plattsmouth yesterdaj.

Will Carstens, who formerly worked
in the shops hero but who left a few
months ago with the 1. & M. repair
gang, had his left foot seriously
mashed at II ill City, S. 1)., lust
Wed net-day morning. Will, together
with several other men, wero engaged
placing a large piece of timber on a
number of tru;sels, when one of the
latter in somo manner slipped and
permitted tho heavy timber to fall on
Mr. Carstens' foot. It is not known
yet whether any bones were broken.
lie was accompanied to this city
last evening by a member of there
pair force, and Mr. Carstens will be
taken care of by relatives here. It is
to be hoped that his injuries will not
prove of ti eerious nature, and his
friends wish to see hira well again
in a short time. Mr. Carstens is a
member of the Fraternal Union order
of this city.

Jacksonville, Fla., Jan. 4. The
cold weather of January 1 and 2 did
considerable temporary aaraage to
vegetables, but none of a permanent
character. Orange trees will in some
instances lose their foliage and when
situated in exposed places in the
northern border of the orange belt
will loso a part of their tender
growth. Owing to the fact, however,
that the sap was down, the trees
themselves were able to resist un
scathed even lower temperature. He
ports from the pineapplo belt of the
east coast indicate that tho damage
to pineapples was trifling.
The fall crop of tobacco in all parts
of the state was injured badly. Blooms
of strawberries wero killed. Early
strawberries in the northern section
were frozen on the vines and the
plants themselves set back fully six
weeks.
The tenderest garden crops in all
sections so far south as Tampa were
lacking protection by forests, streams
or lakes, were badly injured; but ex
posed gardens did not represent more
than half the area of truck, growers
having learned by experience tbe
wisdom ol selecting well protected
spots.
Will Hold Ma Meetings.
Denvek, Colo., Jan. 4. Secretary
George M. Mescbke of the Colorado
commission called upon Mayor Mc
Murray today and discussed the ad
visibility of calling a mass meeting of
the citizens of this county for the pur
pose of increasing the interest in the
matter of a state exhibit at the Trans
mississippi exposition. It Is claimed
by thoe who have charge of the Colo
rado exhibit that a m;iss meeting in
Denver will have the effect of causing
similar meeting in other counties in
the state and will educate the people
to the importance of he movement.
The Mining Engineers' association
has decided to have a mineral ex
hibit at the exposition. They have
formulated plans to co-operate with
the mineral counties of the state in
forming an exhibit worthy of the
leading industry of the state. Should
the different counties refuse to com
bine in a mineral exhibit, tho Mining
h.r.giuecrs association will nave an
exhibit of its own.

reached by tho western roads a few
days ago regarding tho running of
homeseeUers' excureons is a back num
ber alroady. It has been found that
so many of the roads are not satisfied
with the agreement to restrict tho
excursions to points in Missouri river
territory that another meeting has
boon callod for tomorrow. There is
little likelihood that tho meeting will
result in the abolishment of the ex
cursions, as many of l ho roads have
made their arrangements for tho
handling of the business, and have
put out advertising announcing that
they will run the excursions.

The Burlington is averaging 800
cars a day more in its freight traffic
than this time last year, say the State
Journal. During 1897 it brought iu
07,358 cars of grain out of a total of
320,018 brought by all the western
lines to Chicago. This is the largest
business in its history. In 1800 it
handled 51,702 cars, and in 181)4 only
20,775 cars. In its live stock traffic in
1807 was OS, 820 cars, showing a slight
falling off fiom 1806, when it handled
70,047 cars. In 1805 its deliveries sit
the union stock yaids were 03,072 cars.
Work on t he Nebraska lUiildinfj.
The roof of the Nebraska building
is completed witn the exception ol
the covering of the upper part of the
small corner domes. The roofs of
these are hemispherical and will bo
covered with canvas painted the same
shade as the rest of the roof. On
account of their 6hape it will not be
practical to use the elaterite rooliing
with which tho other parts of the
roof are covered.
Kimball Bios, of Lincoln, the con
tractois who win make the statr cov
erine for the Nebraska building, have
arrived with a force of men and com
menced work yesterday morning
making the models for the staff deco
ration. They estimate that about
sixty days will be required to complete
the staff work.
Hester & McCaslin of Lincoln, the
subcontractors for the plaster work
on this building, are making prepara
tions to commence work at once. The
building is ready for the staff and
plaster men, the interior and exterior
having been lathed some time ago.
The carpenters are now engaged in
preparing the woodwork which will
decorate the interior of the building
after the staff and plaster men shall
have completed their portion of tho
work.
Work on the superstructure of the
Illinois building was commenced yes
terday morning.
