A somewhat malignant ind bitter aiticle appeared in lust evening's NEWS entitled "An Open Letter,'rbut the writer evidently preferred to re main concealed, as no name appeared at the end ns is custom iry in letters. Asa number of falss insinuations were made and, possibly, created a few false impression?, it becomes neces sary to make a few statements relative to the fact-. Nothing but contempt should be shown to an anonymous i article, and such a cowardly attack generally receives a little attention as it deserve?. But a word or two as to the "grievances" mentioned. . It has not been the custom of late years for the board to appropriate any money for the commencement exer cises, and the entire expense must le borne by the graduating clu:-s. These include hall root, the printing of in vitations, program?, tickets, etc.; sal ary and expenses of a lecturer, the ex pense of a baccalaureate sermon, etc. The receipts from the commencement are te'.dom sufficient, and the deficit must be raised by the class generally in some form of public entertainment. This will probablv be the c; so this year and in all future years uutil the j bo.it d of education. sis is customary , elsewhere, is financially isble to ap propriate the necessary funds. The giving cf this entertainment is not permitted to iiiteifero with the school work at all and the Senior class is held as strictly to the required work as nny other class, of which fact they will a'l testify. The comuliinentarv list nt the cemmencomeut exercises is ceces- saruy large, Including the paiCLtaof i - ,. the graduates, the pres3, the board of education, etc. This f..ct roterihl v decreases the income. As the article stated that the pi j given list year was a failure finan cially, wo wish to state that the net profits exceeded $40, or twice as much rs we expected. This, how ver, was expendtd by the c ass in various way uutil Iheie was Keurceiy enough to pay the expenses of the exeic.se, aud as the class desired to give an infor mal I al ihoy I vied $1 up .n ca -h meuuer. The suitem lit lhat ".a-htou - und amusement"' are subsiituted for thi-rnugh wo k in th.j S. ni.-r class borders ujoi the ridiculous, as the Senior cl i: s is rather U').:e? the iin-p.e-si- n th it llt-i- class is bein he'd to ti.eir wc-rk wMi loo much severity. The Seniors a so retent the insinua tion that their time is largely taken up to dec. do upon cl ss pins, colors, etc. It is our impression that but two brief meetings of fifteen minutes each, after school, constituted the sum total this jeur Thcra is no time "set aside" frcm school work whatever for this pu pose, as the writer of the ar ticle seems to buiieie. As to the graduate dressing well on the occasion which fo.-mally closes their school life, that seems to be a matter resting wholly with the grad uates themselves and their parents. It certainly ought not to be a source of irritation to an ojts de. The graduates aud their patents ought eeriain'y to be the le.t judges of the expense which is proper in these mat ter. The insinuation rasde th u the moie prosperous membsrs of the class, financially, endeavor to ouishine those of poorer families seems to be without foundation anJ i a rather unjust re flection upon the good breeding of our graduates. We further wish to state lhat at all times it is cur desire that the patrons of the schools 6hall feel free to bring to our ni.tice anj' faults which may be louna with our system, but we trust that a .eraonal interview shall be xrauled us in regurci t ih so mailers and that the criticisms he. mud a in vUwof all tha f: cts. Tnat faults can be found in nur tchooi rt1m iieeiy aamit. ana should be as p. eased to disclose t le 8 imo as th-a strou? points, wo empaaucauy acny that time is being wasted la f.ishion and amusement," and decure that stren uous efforts j.re Ioing made to secure thoroughness and proficiency by the elimination of nil features which dis tract from the woi k. Of the purity aud industry which we claim prevails in our scho le, we simply state that the schools are open to a'l, and any parents who are in doubt are earnest y desired to come and investigate for themselves. As to the the opposition to home teachers, it mav be said that practic ally all of our teachers are borne grad uates and tbe efficient service which they are rendering speaks well for Plattsmouth. Wiihin the l:st year several young graduates have been employed in our schools and their suc cess is well known to the patrons. Our teachers have been compared favor ably with the foreign teachers.and we hope that the time will never come when it will ba necessary to eo abroad for any portion of our teaching force. AH things beinff equal. Platts moulh girls should have the first chance, and the re3ults thus far have not been to their discredit. This showing is very significant, when compared with that for the same month in 1895. It will be noticed that in the above statement the farm mort gages filed exceed the releases only $7,871. while in the city, which is first to feel the touch of prosperity, the re leases exceed those filed by $534. Two years ago, the farm mortgages filed exceeded those released by $11,090, while the excess of the city mortgages filed over those released was $10,545, A year ago the farm mortgages filed amounted to $40,178, or $8,572 more than for the same month this ye ;r. That Ferry Road. Nord & Thomas, who operated the Platte river ferry at Oreapolis could not agree, and dissolved partnership. Each concluded to go into the ferry business for himself, and accordingly both applied for a ferry license to the S :rpy and Cass county commissioners. 1 he farpy county commissioners granted Nord a license, and the Cass county commissioners granted Thomas u license, thus complicating matters somewhat, especially as Nord claimed that the road to the ferry on the Cass county 6ide was on his land, or I ! rather, on land that he had leased frcm the li. & M., aud he proceeded lo close it up. Now comes Supt. Calvert, of the B, & M., and offers the county the use of H road, free, for ninety-nine yenrs, the 1 : 1 ,1 . j . .
