Miss Myrtle Porter left this morn
ing for a visit with her sister, Mrs. C.
F. Nye, in Kansas City. Mr. Nye is
cashier at the Rock Island depot in

S. S. Alley, attorney from Saline
county, is in the city today on legal
business. Mr. Alley is a former resi
dent of this city, having lived here
back in '65, '68.
James Stewart broke into jail again
on Saturday. This makes Jim's
twelfth conviction before Judge Ar
cher for drunkenness. He ought to
be tied up and bi-chlorided.

Professor McIIugh left yesterday
for a summer's outiDg in Europe. He
goes to Minneapolis from here, then
to Dulutb, from whence he will take
steamer and travel down the great

Mrs. C. M. nolmes returned to
Havelock this morning, after a pleas
ant visit with relatives in this city,

lock, she regarded Plattsmouth as
her home, and hoped at soma time to

The German Lutherans of this city,
who have been holding their services
in Waterman hail, have concluded to
build a church edifice of their own,
and work on the building-was begun
yesterday. It will bo at the corner of
Fifth and Vine streets, on the site of
the old Herald office. The building
is expected to cost in the neighbor
hood of 92,000, and will De au orna
ment to the city.
The prize winner now is "Wurl

Smoke no other.
The cutting of willows in front of
the depot, to which reference was
made yesterday, was effectually
stopped this morning without pro
cess of law. When the gang of men
who have been cutting showed up
this morning, they found a foot of
water on the bar, with the river still
rising rapidly. It began to rise yes
terday at about three inches an hour
and this morning was about six feet
higher than at the same hour yester
day. Apparently the "June rise" has
set in in earnest, and bids fair to be
higher than for many years.

class who took part in the "Scrap of
Paper" entertainment given a few
weeks since, . were last night enter
tained in a mwt delightful manner by
Mr. and Mrs. George E. Dovey. Tho
guests present are unanimous in the
daclaration that it was the most ele
gant reception and banquet ever
given to the members of a graduating
class from our city schools. Mrs.
Dovey assisted the class in their pre
paration of the play, and gavo this re
ception iu recognition of the courtesy
and expressions of gratitude extended
to her by the class.
Elegant refreshments were served,
and the Misses Elizabeth and Ella
Margaret Dovey presided at tho punch
bowl. Souveuirs of tho play iu the
form of kodak pictures of the players
iu costume and in positions assumed
io ditlerent scones of tho play, artis
tically mounted, were presented to
each guest, and afforded no end of
amusement Tho players vote Mrs.
Dovey a member of the class, and pro
nounce last night's meeting tho most
pleasurable of their high school ex
perience. Tho clas color red pre
vailed in tho house decorations, and
was also present io red roses, red
neckties and red ribbons.

Misses Myrtle Keefor, Mabel Unruh,
Bertha Kennedy, Myrtle Levings,
Gertrude Foxwell, Louise Smith and
Messrs. Charles Newman, Roy Dodge,
John Iioswcll, Myron Eison, Albert
Fricke and Hilt Wesson. Tho guests
were Mis3 Aliio Wheatun, Miss 13eu
lah Elson, Miss Autonia Kessler and
George Spurlock.

many, there was quite a crowd who
enjoyed tho supper and had nothing

Mr. Eugene Opelt is acting as clerk,
and by the way, he is well adapted
to the jiosition and has filled tho
same place recently at the Windsor
hotel at Lincoln. Several of our busi
ness men have already engaged rooms
and it'looks as if the hotel would do a
thriving business, and we hope it will.

Amos Aldon, living in tho south
part of town, had a team stolen last
Thursday,although the matter was not
reported to tho sheriff till this morn
ing, following is a description of the
team:
One roan mare, seven years old;

in right front hoof; very Jicavy mane;
fore-top clipped;hind feet white; bare
footed ail around; good roadster; had
on leather halter with rope tio when
taken; front hoofs broken.

below knee; neck sore; had shoo on
left hind foot when taken; star io fore
head; fore-top medium length; mane
light weight; throws hind feet out
when driven fast.
