Britt, was in town today on his way to Louisville. C. E. Wescott and his attorney were out in the county on business today. V. W. Coatcs came in from Omaha this morning to look after his Platts mouib interests. Mrs. O. E. Doane of Glenwood came over today for a few days visit with Mrs. A. W. White. Colonel Walt M. Seeley and Mrs. Sloane of Omaha were in the city to day visiting- friends. Mrs. Frank Hager and children, are visitingr the former's mother, Mrs. Ilerold, for a few days. II. M. AYaring, the stenographer par excellence from Omaha, is in town on business today. Commodore Guild, F. M. and J. G. Kichey and Byron Clark were Omaha passengers this morning. The doctors aro kept quite busy just now, as several bad cases of spring fever are reported about town. The fish-mongers seems to bo hav ing very successful hauls of late, :s the market is well stocKed all the time. W. D. Hill and several other promi nent residents of South Bend came in on the Schuyler train this morning. John A. Manners of Murdock and Martha Stone of Alvo got, license to wed up in Lancaster county yes-ter-day. Mrs. Birdie Baker returned to her home at Council BluiTs this morning after spending a few days with rela tives in this city. Hon. O. 1'. Billings-, member of the legislature from Keya 1'eyha county, is in town today visiting Jap Young and other friends. Mrs. Fogg and son, of Creston, re turned home this afternoon after a pleasant visit with Mrs. William Ilerold a-d daughter, Dora. County Attorney Folk will occupy a suit of rooms in the Wettenkamp block when his term expires, part of the rooms being occupied by A. J. Graves at the present time. Colonel Richmond, who used to be here with Blanchard Sl l'otter, is a candidate for clerk of the houso and it is said his chances a re good. "Rich" is all right, and is not too poppy to make a good officer. J. V. Thomas, the sweet potato magnate, has sold the bulk of his tubers in Omaha and Lincoln, wliere the retail dealers eell tbem out as Jerseys, and they are almost as good as the genuine article. J. R. Dodds, editor of the Arbor tState, Wymore's populist paper, was in ttie city today and madeTiiK News a fi aternal call. He brought two of his grand children to visit Harry Ilowland, who is quite ill. Charles B. Murpbey of Denver came in this morning to xisit relatives and old time friends. Charley wears stylish whiskers and has grown until many failed at first glanc3 to re cognize him. lie expects to return home Saturday. Mis Margerite Moore entertained a number of her friends at the home of N. S. Wood last evening in honor of her guest, Miss Stella Chase, of Platts lnouth. The evening was enjoyably passed in social games, after which refreshments were served. Nebraska City Press. THE "FREE SILVER" MEETING. orae of the Followers of .Bryan Select Delegates to Go to the State Meeting: The free silver craze 6till seems to disturb the atmosphere somewhat alihouuh it is fast fubsidiarr. In a short lime wo may txpect it all to go, as g"es the snow in the spring time. and as comes the flowers after winter has gone, to certain is the return of prosperity. The popocratic contingent got to gether at the office of Police Judge Archer this afternoon and after lib erating some of their pent up enthus iasm in telling "how it might have been" and how it wa9 that the "ca-se" was lost, they settled down to work by selecting J. N. Wise as chairman and Robert J. Vass as secretary. The object of the meeting was then stated, which was to select delegates to the free 6ilver convention to be held at Lincoln January 6, 1S97. The representation was three delegates at large and one for every 200 votes cast for tho Bryan electors sixteen in all which were apportioned as follows: Democrats, six; free silver republi cans, two; populists, five. The dele gates selected were: Delegates at large M. Morrissy, free silver republican; J. N. Wise, democrat; M. S. Briggs, populist. The democrats were: R. B. Wal lace, W. E. Paling, Chas. Krofts, S. M. Patterson, C. W. Sheriran and F. J . Morgan. Free silver republicans J. M. Leyda and R. T. Rochford. Populist R J. Vass, D. W. Foster, W. Waugh, J. W. Raasoner and B. F. Allen. Steps wero taken to organize a county bimetallic league. Agitatom Continue to Agitate. The adjournea meeting for the pur pose of -completing the organization of the Bimetallic league, met at the office of Police Judge Archer last night. It was called to order by J. N. Wise, the chirman, while C. W.Sher man wielded the pen, as secretary. Sonid discussion was indulged in by Messrs. Archer, Larsen, Sherman, Wise and Briggs. The committee on by-laws was given more time to com plete their labors. The meeting ad journed to January 12, at which lime organization will be completed. The meeting was liberally attended. Is Kecovrring His Mental Faculties. Mathow Boesfield, tho Canadian who has been insane at the home of Mr. Van Fieet, is reported much bet ter today. Re appears quite rational and it is thought will be well enough to return to his home in a few days. His mental malady seems to have re sulted from some trouble over the settlement of an estate. A telegram from Canada was received this morn ing from the man's relatives inquiring about his condition. Sokola Will Give a Hall. The masquerade ball of the year will be held at the J. T. Sokol nail Satur day evening, January lt, 1S97. You are invited to attend, as no expense will be spared to make it the event of tho season. Rowe, who signs his peti tion with an (x) his mark, and hailing from Cass county, began suit in the district court today against Frank II. Bailey, asking for judgment for $9,- 0SG.73. From his petition it was learned that in 18S8 to 1S01 ho bor rowed considerable money from Mr. Bailey's father and gavo a chattel mortgage every timo for the same. The mortgages were filed with the clerk of Cass county each time and paid when they became due. He charges that Mr. Bailey failed to sat isfy the mortgage records after the notes were paid. lie now sues to re cover all the money borrowed by him and for damages claimed to have been sustaii.ed by reason of not satisfying the records.
