Hon. Alvin Saunders was elected
United States senator. Two years ago
he was a candidate for tho gubernator-
ial nomination, but was defeated in
tho convention by Tom Majors, who
wiis subsequently defeated 03' Gover
' ufor Ilolroinb at the polls. Ho is a
Knight Templar and a Shrincr; also a
Scottish Kite Mason and a lifelong ro
. publican. He has always doud largely
engaged in agriculture and is an earn
est, progressive citizen of the state,

didate for state auditor, was born in
Sweden 40 years ago. lie came to this
countrv at an early ago and in 187(5 lo
cated at Holdrege, I'helps county,
whore he was for fourteen years couniy
clerk and surveyor. Ho has also been
vice-president of the First National
bank of Iloldrege. Two years ago he
was a candidate for state auditor be
fore the convention, but was defeated
by the present auditor, Eugene
Moore. He then went into the ollice
as Moore's deputy and has proved a
most excellent executive otlicer. Mr
IlediunU is married, the father of
even children and at present resides
in Lincoln. Ho has always been a
loyal republican and is very popular
amotr the Swedes and Danes of Ne
braska.
V 'Joel A. 1'ipor was born in Oxford
cojnty, Ontario, Juno X, 1851. Upon
reaching his majority ho removed to

A. S. Churchill was born on a farm
in Erie county. New York, February
2, 1844, and removed with his parents !
to Wisconsin in 1S4G. He commenced
the practice of his profession at
Atlanta, la., whore ho remained until
his removal to Omaha in January,
1SST. Ho cast his first vote for Grant
for president and has ever since been
a republican. Ho held but one office
previous to his election to tho position
of attorney general two years ago,
that of city clerk of Atlanta, la.
Henry 11. Cor belt was born' in Tren
ton. Clinton county. III., in 1861. His
father, who was a l'rosby terian mini
ster, moved to Nebraska in 1878 and
engaged in the mercantile business at
Nelson. Nuckolls county. He was
sent to tho old home of his mother in
Vermont to be educated, but the ill
ness of his father compeliod the young
ni.-iii to 1 eturn to Nebraska and assume
tho management of a farm to which
his father had removed. He worked
on the farm lu the summer and taught
school in the winter and finally com
pleted tho last year of his college
course at tho Hastings Collego, grad
uating in 1889. Since that time he has
been engaged in teaching. When
elected two years ago to the office to
which ho has been renominated he
was superintendent of tho public
schools at York.
Kobert Kyan was born in Washing
ton county, New York, July 27, 1842.
He was admitted to practice in the
supreme court of Iowa in December,
1So7. Ho removed to this state in 1882,
locating at Lincoln, and practiced his
profession continually until appointed
as one of the supreme court commis
sioners of this state in lS'J.'J.
Moses 1. Kinkaid was born on a
farm in- Magnolia county. West
Virginia, January 24, 1851, and with
his parents resided in that county and
Grove county, Pennsylvania, until
lSt'.l), when the family removed to
Henry county. Illinois. In 1874 ho en
tered the law department of the Uni
versity of Michigan, graduating in
lS7i. Ho first commenced tho prac
tice of his profession in his home
county in Illinois, but removed in 1880
to l'ierre, S. D. He only remained
there a few months, however, when he
removed to O'Neill, in this state.
where he has resided since. He was
apjKjinted to a position on the bonch
in his district in April, 18S7, by Gover
nor Thayer, and has since been elec
ted to that position, which he now
holds. In 1882 he was a member of
the state senate, being chairman of
the committee on judiciary.
The New Federal Salary Uw
The new salary law passed by the
of $3,500. S. It. Hush, assistant to Mr.
Sawyer, will get a salary not to exceed
2,"0 a year, the exact amount to be
fixed by the attorney-general. All tne
deputy marshals were legislated out
of office by the bill at midnight Tues
day night, and new ones were ap-
pointod by Marshal White. There
will be no new facos in the list, but
many of the old ones will disappear.
There have been about eighteen of
those deputies in the state, but here
after there will be but seven. Those
to secure reappointment are A. E.
Coegoshall of Omaha, chief deputy;
Louis Boehmo of Omaha, A. H.
Tomilson of Red Cloud, J. II.
Thrasher of Plattsmouth, M. E Ilub-
bard of Lincoln, W. II. Liddiard of
Ilushvillo and J. M. Gobol of Spring-
view. Under the now law these
deputies will be allowed three-fourths
of their gros earnings, not to excel in
total amount tho sum of !fl,o00 net a
year.
