A Model ISt'iif !W-lry Order.
Deputies G. II. Henmng and W. B.
Wood are in the city soliciting mem
bers for perfected woodcraft, the
Woodmen of the World.
The "Woodmen of the World" is a
fraternal beneficiary order destined
from its phcnominal growth and in
creasing popularity to eventually be
come one of the strongest protection
fraternities in existence. Though
only six years old, it has penetrated
every state and province in the
United States and Canada, and has
beeu admitted into England, France
and Germany. Its jurisdiction,
though world-wide, is divided in sub
districts, according to the health of
the respective localities, each paying
its own lossoss. Its .membership is
about 58,000. When it is considered
that on the 9th inst. a camp of this
order was organized in the city of
Omaha, consisting of 130 of tho most
prominent professional and business
men of the city and state, its value
and perfection is exemplified, not only
by unprecedented growth of member
ship but also by the quality of its
members. Among the many promi
nent and distinguished gentlemen of
Omaha in the order are: Judge Irvine,
of the supreme bench of Nebraska;
Powell, district judge; Baxter, pro
bate judge; Eller, ex-county judge;
McDonald, sheriff; Burket, "coroner;
Edwards, city treasurer; Patterson,
the capitalist; Rector, wholesale hard
ware merchant; Cole, the greut com
mission merchant; Hon. John L.
Webster, City Attorney Churchill,
etc. This order has a well-established
camp in this city. Parties wishing to
join the order will do well to see the
above deputies or give their names to
some member of this camp at once, as
thev are working under a special
dispensation while the deputies are
hero and their stay with us is limited.

The Missouri Pacific is having more
trouble with its depot at Talmage than
any other place along the line. Every
time tramps want a little money or
imagine they need something they go
in and help themselves. The safe has
been blown open two or three times
and a number of articles stolen. Lust
night two tramps went into the depot
and stole two suits of clothes, one of
which was made by r red Kuwitzky.
The tramps went south with the offi
cers in pursuit. Nebraska City News.

SOME PECULIAR ACCIDENTS.
An Oculist T11 How the Sight ot Sve.-1
Persons Was Destroyed.
A prominent oculist, of this city gives
the following list of queer accidents
that have come under his observation
recently:
A little boy, 10 years old, was stand
ing in front of a bird fancier's shop
when an aged parrot seemed to take a
sudden animosity to tho child and dart
ed at him, pecking out one eye before
he could get out of the way.
Some linemen left a lot of short wire
lying on Euterpe street after repairing
the telephone connections in that dis
trict. An old negro woman who was on
her way to market early the next morn
ing stepped on one end of a bit of this
wire, when the other end flew up. strik
ing her in the eye and blinding her.
A milker employed at one of the
dairy farms near tho city was milking
a cow that had got her tail matted and
tangled with cockleburs. In the course
of the milking the cow switched her
tail into the man's face, the mass of
burs striking him in one eye and com
pletely destroying the sight cf it.
A lad shooting at sparrows with an
airgun hit his little brother in tho eye
and blinded him for life.
Tommy Peats, the handsome, bright
eyed 7-year-old son of a widow, fell
down 6tairs backward. When his moth
er got to him and picked him up, the
boy was asleep, tho shock having affect
ed him in this singular manner, and in
an hour after, when he opened his eyes,
they were badly and irrevocably crossed
A poor lad who is affected with epi
lepsy during a recent attack fell against
tho steam coils in his father s office,
burning and blistering his eyes so badly
that tho sight is gone.
As the Louisville and Nashville pas
eenger train was coming into the city

the day coach, shattering one of the
windows. The particles of glass new

What Shall We Call It?
The boys call it a "bike" and are
happy; the dictionary makers call it a
"bicycle" and rest content, thongh
heaven knows the philological sin osght
to lie heavily on their literary con
sciences, and we who ride and are hap
py and independent call it a "wheel, "
in spite of tho finicky protest of sundry
would bo pedants who fill space in the
daily and weekly papers. Pray, why not
"wheel?" Do you know cf a better
name? Surely not "bicycle," for "bi
cycle, " besides being an awkward word,
does not describe tho instrument of de
light we know, as doubtless the origina
tor of the word fully dreamed it did
"Bicycle" has an affected, strained
sound that ill accords with the best ele
ments of the language we love, the lan
guage whoso strength lies in its short,
crisp words, pulsating with life and
meaning.
It is not unusual to designate a spe
cific thing by a generic term, and wo do
no violence to the language when we
say we ride awheel. The term came in
to general use when men did literally
ride upon a wheel, in the days of the
old "ordinaries," before the advent of
"safeties." It was awheel they rode,
the second member of the machine trail
ing behind in almost unnoticed insig
nificance. It was then that a thousand
tongues at onco named the wheeL This
democratic term of spoutaneons birth
has had a tenacious life and will still
live, for it is always the people who
make language, not pedants nor die
tionary compilers. Womankind.
Rainbows That Can Change Sex.
Iu many parts of the world it is the
general belief that the rainbow has the
power to change sex. This queer belief
obtains in 6uch widely separated dis
tricts as South Africa and Norway and
China and Australia. The Zulus have a
long folklore story of the young man
who was changed into a wrinkled old
woman by touching the many hued arch.
The Scandinavian peasants have a sim
ilar story, and in Greece they say that
anybody who runs against the end of
the rainbow will have his or her sex in
stantly changed. In France and India
to pass under the rainbow has a similar
effect. St. Louis Republic

"My boy," said the passenger with

everyday," said he to the motorman.

A Mysterious Disappearance.
The several friends of Geo. Pilzer,
of Glen wood, will bo sorry to loarnTf
tho sudden and unexplained disap
pearance of his sister, which is giving
the family groat trouble. Mis Pitzer
was a bright young lady of more than
common accomplishments, past 21
years of ago and was teaching some
where in Mills county. Her work was
very satisfactory. A few days ago
she collected what was due her and
then wrote two letters, one to tho
board resigning her position and the
other to her mother, asking tho folks
to come there and get her tilings, say
ing further that sho was eoing away
and for them not to look for her, be
cause it would bo of no use, as they
could not find her. It seems she then
went up to Malvern and stayed all
night; then took the train for Council
Bluffs. She was last seen at Council
Bluffs' transfer depot with a long
coupon ticket in her hand, but since
that time (which was but a few days
ago) not the slightest cluo of her has
bceu obtained. Miss Pitzer bad uo

figured out that there was a man in
the case, though the reason for such
queer actions can not be discovered.

bright It is hoped by the friends of the
family hero that no harm has befallen
her and that her strange actions may
be satisfactorily explained to the sor
rowing mother and other relatives.
