Here is a huge embossed silver cylinder,

Tlie first telephone that was ever
used was not electrical, nor was it a
scientific instrument in tiny sense of
the term. A little more than Mi years
ago the employees of u large manu
factory beguiled their leisure hours
by kite Hying. Kites largo und small
went up daily, and tho strife was to
see who could get tho largest. The
twine which held them was the
thread spun and twisted by tho la
dies of the village.
One day to the tali? of the largest
kite was attached a kitten, sewed in
a canvas bag, with a netting over
the mouth to givo it air. When the
kite was at its greatest height- '.'no
feet or more-tho mewing could lie
distinctly heard by those holding the
string. To the clearness of the at
mosphere was attributed tho hearing
of the kitten's voice. This is the first
account we remember of speaking
along a line. Sheffield Telegraph.

TIM folly of introducing a hand
some male friend to one's best girl
was illustrated in Cuinbridgo ro
cently. It was a enso of diainond cut dia
mond. The court ships of two younp
men were cut short, and a pretty
Cambridge girl is "not keeping com
pany now with nnylxxly in particu
lar." She is good looking, and her father
is well off, all of which made young
man No. Inn ardent admirer and a
freipii-nt caller at her home. His at
tentions were received with favor,
for he, too, was good looking, and
dressed like a man in good circuni
stances.
Oneday tire couple met young man
No. L', mid lio was duly i'ltrodueed.
Ho found an opportunity lo call at
the young woman's home, and, as he
was an agreeable companion and n
good conversationist, his visits went
as agreeable as they were frequent.
Finally he was received with such
favor that young man No. I began to
realize that he was losing ground,
and he determined to take decisive
action.
When lie got a chance he casually
asked th;? pret ty Cambridge girl it'
she knew anything about his rival's
occupation. She had never thought
of that, and s.inl so, whereupon Ie
hesitatingly intimated that. No. '.'was
a waiter in a cheap restaurant. This
c.ituvd a small sensation, which
reached a climax win n No. 2 called.
There was a coolness on the part ol
the young woman which In- cmild
not understand. He asked for an ex
planation and got it. It was a sur
prise, b'lt ho grasped the situation in
a moment.
"Do you know what Mr. 's oc
cupation is; In- asked.
Well, in, she didn't, but she had
inferred (hat lie was a student at. tin
medical college. The young man
looked more amused than before and
said :
"1 suppose that if 1 told you what
his occupation really is you would be
inclined to doubt nie, under the cir
cumstances, so I will not ask you to
believe what I say. But if you will
agree to go into Boston with nie to
morrow evening and come home
again on the next oar I think 1 will
be able to surprise you."
The young woman, after a mo
ment's reflection, assented to the
proposition, and the young man left
tho house with his face wreathed iu
smiles.
Tho next evening tho two emtio
into Boston and got off the car at the
Tremont House. They walked along
a short distance, and suddenly tho
young 'man stopped in front of a
hotel mid asked his companion to
look in at ono of the windows of tho
tonsorial department. She did so,
blushed and turned away quickly.
That evening the young man
stopped at tho Cambridge girl's gate
to havo a laugh, and as ho went
away exclaimed:
"By Jove, that barber does look
like Jack, but how did I ever come
to think tf it ,"
The last act of this little comedy
drama took place a few evenings
later when young man No. 1 called.
He felt as hapjiy us a mini who im
agined he was in complete possession
of the field naturally would be. But
tho atmosphere was as cool in one
part of the room as it was agreeable
in another. 1 lo finally asked if she
had weighed what he had said on his
last visit,
"Vi s." replied tin? young lady with
as in ticli com jiosure as she was eapa
bio of under t lie circumstances, "and
1 found out what your occupation in
too."
The young man looked amused und
felt confident Unit in- could explain
away anything his rival had said ty
attributing it to jealousy.
"What did lie say t'
"You are a barber."
The young man laughed loudly and
seemed to think it all a very good
joke, but seeing that his hilarity
made no impression, asked with
smile:
"And you believed him?"
"Heliovcd him! Why, I saw yi
shaving a inan."
