What a Wanntgan Is.
A wannigan is a flat bottomed boat,
on which a house is built, according to
the financial ability of the owner, and
many of those on the west were well
built and very comfortable and costly
furnished. Some stand high above the
river at its ordinary stage, and in cases
of his-h water are supposed to float.
Others were built below the bank near
the water's edire and raised several feet
by means of blocks and posts. With the
water very near the floors no danger
was apprehended by the occupants, but

debris.
Recentlv the frail underpinnings on
one side of some half dozen wannigaus
were knocked out, and they ignouiin
ionsly toppled over in the water, piling
furniture, crockery and occupants in
confusion. Then the water came in and
added to the work of destruction. The
wanniirans might have floated on a:i
even keel, but they were never built to
be launched with only half the ways
knocked out. St. Paul Pioneer Press.

and excitement on ln.ard.
"As this is a new experience to yon,
tdr, you shall have a seat with mo in my
Kiat."
"Thank you, cant iin; I am only too
eager to see the fun."
The crews now take their places in the
seine boats, while two of the party,
known as drivers, go out in advance m
little thirteen foot boats to learn the
direction in which the school is moving,
and to mark out its size. The jolly ci-

the other, and by the time they reach
the school the drivers describe the move
