"I do say that the enormus sum paid in the way of pensions is a double hardship on the people of the South," said General Patterson of Tennessee, one of the plain-spoken ex-Confederate Brigadiers in the House. lie objects to bension be cause they draw money away from the South and put it in the hands of Union veterans at the north. The signs of emotional insanity with which democrats welcome an unfledged youngster in the house of representatives who manifests a disposition to lead, does not speak well for their confidence in the ex isting leadership of the house. The sore need of the democrats for a parliamentary leader is shown in the acclaim with which they wel comed their young Lochinvar who went from this district. And yet Bryan will come back to his home in this state to stay as soon as his one term in congess expires. In Wales the women and children work with the men in making tin plates, and it is not uncommon to see a whole family on the same job, from the dwarfed and stunted youngster to the father aged before his time, all laboring side by side. Against such cheap labor the Unit ed States can not compete without protection. In this country the children are to go to school and the women are not to engage in such distasteful and inappropriate work as tin plate dipping: but the men who do it are to have good wages Hence the necessity of protective duties on tin plate. SENATOR HILL in his Birmingham speech said of the city's growth: "Your triumphs here in every de partment are the wonders of the world. There is no example like it afforded in the country. The place where this city stands, only a few years ago was an open plain, and now is one of the most thriving cities of the whole south." The senator spoke the truth as far as he went, but he should have told the whole truth and said that all that wonderful growth was the direct re sult of the republican policy of pro tection to home industries. Bir mingham's chief industry is the manufacture of iron, and without protection the place would yet be as the speaker said it was a few years ago "an open plain." If the senator is as honest as he claims to be, why didn't he tell the whole truth? Some of the democratic Jgreen- horns in congress have made a ludi crous spectacle of themselves in wailing over the need of free raw material to enable American manu facturers to export goods and com pete in the markets of the world. The McKinley tariff provides free raw material in such cases and if that is all the manufacturers need they have it in full measure. By decrees the democrats are learning what the McKinley tariffreally is j an 1 what it means. It too' them neirly two years to learn that theV McKinley tarilf is constitutional,-j out wtien me supreme court gave. its decision thev had to take tlifi medicine. They will catch on to the other good features of the McKinley tariff in time and learn to like them. IT RAN IN THE FAMILY The small boy was silting on the fence in front of a ramshackling old house with a bed ouilt for a door and a slouch hat acting in the capacity of a window pane, and the boy's general appearance matched the house. I hailed the youngster as I rode by, and after a few ques tions about the neiirhborhood I asked if they had i school house. "Naw, not 'roun' here," he ans wered, "but there's one three mile down the run." "Do you go to school?" I en- quired. "Naw." "Can you read and write?" "Naw," and his ej'es opened wide. "How old are you?" "Fourteen goin' on fifteen." "And can't read and write?" "Naw, I can't and I don't have to," he said, with great confidence. "My pa's a democrat, and I'm goin' to be one, too, I am."' DEMOCRAT1C METHODS. Democratic politicians are active ly circulating the false report that there is an A. I'. A. organization in this city and .that the republican candidates for city offices are mem bers thereof. The report is a LIE, used to excite the urejudices of Catholic democrats of the city. The standing of the democratic candi dates before this community not being equal to that of the repub lican candidates, this dodge is re sorted to. THE llBKALD cannot even ascertain the fact, if fact it is, that there is such an organization. We personally know the republican candidates do not belong to it or know anything of it. Now, then, do the democrats of this city wish to stir up a religious issue in our city election? That is the question, and the men who are resorting, to that kind of trickery will find the thing will react. Run j-our ticket, gentle men, on the square merits of your candidates and don't attempt to steal an election from the honest voters of this city. Do not miss the opportunity of your life, but come to our store Wednesday of Thursday and have your eyes tested for glasses free of cost, by America's great optician, H. P. Spencer, at Gering & Co.
