The United States cruiser Charles ton came down from Mare Island to-day and put to sea at once with out stopping. Iter destination is uot known positively, but it ia he lived she has gone to San Diego to await order, for Hering sea. The same activity that prevailed at Mare Island navy yard during the discussion of the Chilian affairs ha sr'ain been revived by reason of the Heriny; sea controversy, and every indication points strongly to the fact that the United States pro poses to send immediately north al the available navy vessels 011 the Pacific coast station. A SURE THING. Plattsmouth Will Play Ball Its League Club a Winner. The local base ball managemen has been on the rustle for sometime and hat finally received encourage ment enough to warrant them in declaring that Plattsmouth will have base ball and good ball, too. T. M. Patterson has had the entire control of the club in his hands for some time, and to his efforts can this city lay its success. lie has already signed eight players and has several more in view. The players so far signed are Maupin catcher of last year's Lincoln Giants and Plattsmouth clubs; Reeves, crack colored pitcher of Kansas City; George Yapp, our rrack pitcher of last year; Gibson, first baseman, of Fairfield, Iowa: Mc- Kibben, second baseman of last season's Hastings team; Porter, o the Pueblo, Colorado, team, third base; Clark, of Carroll, Iowa, short stop, and Bradford, of the Omaha Nonpareils, fielder. It is possible. however, that Bradford may not play here. He has been dickering with Beatrice, and they claim him. Patterson still hopes to keep him The team compares favorably with anyjin the league and, no doubt, will be "in it" from the start. In fact, i our enthusiasm gets worked up, we will soon be ready to claim the championship. Hastings has finally determined to enter the league and Kearney is said to be getting in trim for i fight. If these two clubs come in Aorlolk will oe retained anu an eieht-club circuit formed. From present indications the Nebraska state league will be a flourishing success. O. A telegram received this after noon a few minutes before 4 o'clock from Louisville calling for help saying that a fire had got started in that village and that if help did not arrive soon the entire town would be consumed. Later A telegram received at 4:30 states that the fire has been gotten under control, but not before the flames had consumed the Hank 'of Commerce and several small frame buildings. A large crowd of men from this city were at the depot waiting for a train to be made up to go to the assistance of the vil lage, but ere they were ready to start a telegram was received an nouncing the fact that the flames had been subdued. The city council met last evening in reerular session at the council chamber. Present Mayor Richey and Clerk Eox. On calling the roll the following councilmen answered to their names: Salisbury, Gutsche, Minor, Petersen, Murphy, W. D. Jones. D. M. Tones, Larsen, Dove. Absent Browne. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. A petition was presented, signed by a number of citizens, asking that the limits of the city of Plattsmouth be changed so as to exclude the Porter place. Jones of the Second moved that the petition be laid on the table. Salisbury moved, as an amendment, that the petition be re ferred to the judiciary committee, Murphy moved, as an amendment to the amendment, that the petition be referred to the committee on streets, alleys and bridges. The original motion and the amend ment to the amendment were lost The amendment was carried and the petition was referred to the judiciary committee. . A petition from William Neville was read, asking for a crossing to be put on Sixth street, north of the postoffice. Prayer of petition granted. lhe city engineer maue nis re port as to the estimate of laying sidewalk in the city. The report was accepted. The chief of police and chief of the fire department made a report on the chimneys in the different parts of the city that had been con demned. The fire warden was in structed to netity all those owning property where chimneys had been condemned to repair tneir chim neys. ; , . -a The police judge reported fines collected to the amount of $9.50. Larson introduced the following resolution, which was adopted: Be it "Resolved, By the mayor and city council, That tne police iuage De and is hereby instructed to report to the city council in every case when security is received for costs in police court, and that said secur ity be drawn up according to law." A petition was received and read, from a number of citizens, asking that Sixth street, between Rock and Gold streetB, be graded so that side walk could be laid. Gutsche moved that the prayer of petitioners be granted. Salisbury amended that grading to the amount of $50 be done. Larson further amended that grading to the amount of $100 be done. Carried. The treasurer's report was read and referred to the finance com mittee. The finance committee allowed the following accounts against the city: . Jones, hauling dead dogs 2 00 Timothy Clark, coal 9 00 The cemetery committee was in structed to accept the lowest bid for trimming trees and enter into con tract with responsible parties for the faithful performance of same. A petition was presented by the Women's Chriatan Temperance Union and a numberof citizens, ask ing the council to take some steps to prohibit the posting of obscene pasters on the bill boards. The petition was referred to the police comittee. C. II. Wooley was present and brought up the claim of C. Dundas for $80 that he claimed was due him for overwork and asked the council to take some action upon the bill. After the bill was explained to Mr. Wooley he asked for further time to prepare the bill and present it in proper shape, which was not allowed: Gutsche moved that the bill be not allowed. Murphy amen ded the motion up moving- the bill he referred back to Mr. Dundas The amendment was lost but the srignal motion was carried. Larsen brought up the report on the public library which was adopted. The council voted $500 annually for the maintenance of the reading room. The Mayor and Clerk were au thorized to enter into contract with the Y. L. R. A. for the purchase of the library. Un motin the council adjourned, Brown & Barrett were successful in securing the agency for Nebras ka of the only house in the U. S. who make a specialty of new de signs of wall paper for city trade. The people of Plattsmouth should call at their store and see the new things just out in the wall paper line. The three terpsichorean pearls, the "Sisters Don," Lulie, Lizzie and Emma, will be one of the . great features of the "Two Old Cronies" company. Seven of the worlds fair buildings are now so far advanced that they are fast assuming the appearance of finished structures. The rough carpentry work on them is practi cally done and the ornamental and finishing work on them is in pro gress. Tnese buildings are the woman's horticultural, transporta tion, mines, forestry, administra tion and fisheries. Five more the government, fine arts, agricultural dairy and Illinois state are erected to the roof. The electricity, manu factures and machinery buildings are being advanced rapidly. ine exposition autnorities are anxious that all of the states and territories which intend to erect buildings at the exposition and which have not yet submitted plans for approval, do so at the earliest possible moment. Very soon a time will be specified beyond which plans will not be accepted. May 1 is the date likely to be chosen. The demand for space is so great that delinquent states are liable to lose their sites that have been assigned to them. The Suffolk Horse Society of England have offered two gold medels af the value of $50 for the best Suffolk horse and mare or filly exniDitea at tne worm's lair in Chicago. Mr. Ossian Guthrie of Chicago, together with many other scien tists, declare that no more striking proofs of the glacial epoch exist in this country than are seen in the Desplaines valley between Chicago and Joliet. For educational rea sons Mr. Guthrie advocates the making of an exhibit demonstrating this fact at the world's fair, with maps, surveys and collections of geological specimens, which are abundant, so arranged as to show the lines of glacial progress.
