Anything to Beat Cora.
A young couple in the west end who j
have been keeping company two years.
became engaged with the consent of
all concerned and looked forward with
the customary supreme bliss to the
consummation of their betrothal. Sud
denly the betrothed maiden changed
her mind and told her lover she would
not marry him. When he recovered
his breath he begged for an explana
tion, but could get no other than that
she had decided to marry somebody
else. Sorrowfully he left her and in
the solitude of his chamber put on his
thinking-cap. The result was that the
jilt received a formal note from him
telling her that he would call on a cer
tain evening for her final answer. He
called and met with a frigid reception.
His afiianced told him that her de
cision was irrevocable ami handed him
a package containing all his gifts to
her.
"By Jove!" he cried, "you're the best
gul in the universe: 1 feel as though
a ton weight had been lifted from my
breast.
He grabbed the package and his hat
and made for the door. The girl was
petrified with amazement.
"What is the meaning of this?" she
stammered.
"Whj it means," he answered. "that
1 am free. I tried my best to nut.-i.er

but couldn't do it. I'll send your let

"And pray who may Cora be?" was
snapped out rather viciously.
"Oh. she's the girl I'm going now to
ask to marry me. She's a beauty. I'll pupils,
send you her picture and I'll give hef
the diamond ear-rings you have re
turned to me." His hand was on the
knob when these words arrested him:
"If you attempt to go I'll scream. I
want you to understand that our en

that Cora again. I'm going to marry
you myself."
