A Washington artist, K. F. An
drews, who painted the Martha
Washington and Thomas Jefferson
portraits which hang in the famous
east room of the white house, has
been at work at intervals for 3'ears
on a full length painting of Dolly
Madison, once the lovely young
mistress of the executive mansion.
The painting was placed on exhi
bition in the Corcoran gallery to-da3'-.
The picture represents the
bewitching Doily in a garden walk,
with a simple background of
autumn foliage. She is in a very
natural attitude, making a half step
forward, the hand gracefully
posed, one holding chi-3-santhe-
meuitis an I the other supporting a
transparent gauze scarf thrown
about her figure. The combina

THE ILLINOIS BOURBON SCANDAL.
The state treasurer of Illinois has
brought suit for $-1,000 against a
certain gentleman connected with
the democratic state central com
mittee of that state, that is of gen
eral interest in these da-s wheu the
democrac3r is howling "reform" and
committing every possible scheme
of villiany that will gain power for
its part3' or plunder for its bosses
The Chicago News states that the
suit is based upon a note given b3"
the gentleman referred to the state
treasurer. The note being elated!

Th uit
has caused consternation in the
democratic ranks as well as being
"an eye-opener" to the public as to
the manner in which the demo
cratic bosses obtained the two votes
necessary to elect Gen. Palmer, who
is now conspicuoufrly howling for
"reform" in the national senate.
The case is entitled "Wilson vs. V
H. Hrinton, et al. and the defend
ants have publicly announced that
the note will be paid and that the
suit will not be permittrd to come
a hearing. Such is "reform" by
.'fC'jners!" The Illinois courts
snotild now take Hold ol tne case
and prosecute it in the name of
publie honor and common decency.
Gen. Palmer is a conspicuous ad
vocate of the election of United
States senators by direct vote of the
people and made his campaign on
that issue, and yet he was elected
by votes oi two men who betrayed
"the people" to gain "boodle," that
he and Ins lrieiitls are now com

are only samples of those who
howl for "reform" in all other
siates.

The comments of English news

with the facts in the case. There is

about the protection of Americans
from brutal assaults in any part of
the world. On that main subject
there are no party divisions what

that the United States covers Chili

distant South America.
