Called Away.
Senator Plumb died suddenly of
npoplcxy shortly before noon yes
terday. He had been slightly in
disposed for several weeks, though
it was apprehended that a little
rest would completely restore him
to his old time vigor. He was sub
ject to repeated attacks of a severe
headache, brought on by overwork.
His physician repeatedly admon
ished him to take more rest, to the
end that his life might be prolonged.
Senator Plumb had served four
teen yearn in the senate, nnd two
years ago was re-elected for a term
which would have expired in IH!l..
He was one of the bent known men
in congress. His tall, athl'-tie lorm,
his swinging western gait, his
breezy method of speaking and his
rugged independence and original
ity of thought and action made him
a notable man in the senate, and he
was a power on all ouestions to
which he gave his mind. He was
an omnivorous reader and an un
tiring worker. In the few days that
the present congress has been 111
session he had submitted more
than thirty bills of a more or les
miblic character, embracing almost
everything ol interest to his con
stituents, from free coinage of sil
ver upwards and down, while not
a ureat leader, he was considered
an able, sincere exponent of the
rights of his constituency. While
lie was thoroughly republican re
garding great national question",
he was preno to follow the dictates
of his own conscience, even though
it conflict with the views ol his
friends.
Governor Humphrey will appoint
a republican to fill the vacancy
during the preaent congress. A
new legislature will be chosen next
November 3, upon which will
devolve the election of a U. S.
senator.
