In response to the call for a beet
sugar convention by the Lincoln
board of trade, about 40 represent
ative Nebraskans assembled in the
representative hall of the state Cap
itol yesterday. Hun. K. II. Oakley,
president of the Lincoln board of
trade, called the meeting to order at
2:4.1 p. m. Gov. Thayer was called
upon and responded in one cf the
best speeches of his life. The
governor expressed a deep interest
in uuy move having for its object
the betterment of the state audf u
eoumged the beet sugBr industry.
Pending the uppointinent of com
mittees, Col. Sam Cox of Lincoln
made a stirring address favoring
the industry.
The temporary organization was
made permanent by the election
of ex-Lieutenant Governor Meikle
iolin us president and Messrs.
N a mo n and Atkinson secretaries.

morning, enroute for Lincoln.
During the brief stop we con
versed with him relative to
his intentions for the future.
He informed us that he proposed

to establish a normal school in
live progressive Nebraska town.
At present he has had several prop
ositions which he is con-idcnng.
Upon inquiry as to whether it
would be practicable for Plalts

location, he informed us that he
would be very glad to have Plalts-
inouth enter the race, lie ex
pressed himself as favorably im
pressed with our little city and had
ttle doubt that a normal school
could be made a grand success at
this place.
In the event our cititen desire
to avail themselves of a golden op
portunty to make a progressive
move, it will he wen to consiuer
the matter proposed by Mr, Croan.
There is not the least doubt that a
normal college, such as he would
establish would be an honor to our
city and a credit to our state.
The benefits accruing in a finan
cial source cannot well be over
estimated, The school recent
ly destroved at Shenandoah has
had Htk average attendance the en
tire year of nearly eight hundred
students and assisted by the more
liberal support of larger and
wealthier town, the progressive and
energetic qualities of Pres Croan
OOuld not fail to largely increase
the attendance. These students
would spend thousands of dollars
annually with the merchants of our
town.
We suggest that our board of
trade consider the matter at once.
