Within a short time the fjreHt day for

At the comintf of the winter solstice the
whole nation is supposed o pray, at least
in the person of the emperor. This great
worship takes place at night. The em

elephant which the king of Siam sent
him, is escorted by 2,000 grandees, princes
and attendants, while bands of musio

Upon the altar of heaven he should

take place, now that the altar of heaven
is burned down, I do not know; but the
occasion may call out some expressions
of opinion from different parts of the

A bnnied pinafore has been the came
of a curious debate. A girl In-longing
to the Cuckoo Lane schools, at Han well,
belonging to the city of London and bt.
Savour's union, dropped the chalice at
communion service and stained the pina
fore. Thereupon the high chaplain or
dered the piuaforo not to be washed, but
to t destroyed. As it belonged to the
ratepayers the managers inquired hi
authority for destroying their property,
The chaplain pleaded the precedent
that old Bibles are destroyed in the sains

strange country, where he taught thu

After seven years lie returned to Ire
land, and subsequently tried a second
voyage to the same country, as he had
promised to revisit it, but was baffled by
the wind and tide. He died in the odor
of sanctity in 57S, aged ninety-four years.
The curious thing is that when Cortez
invaded Mexico he found the natives in
possession of some of the doctrines of
Christianity, which they said had been
taught them by a stranger clad in a long
robe, who came to them from the Holy
island beyond the sea in a "boat with
wings" many centuries before and prom
ised to return to them. The advent of
Cortez was in fact hailed as a fulfill

Wealtliy Muu and Dlrrctora' Fee.
The money making icople of Wall
street were startled a few days ago bv
report that Russell Sago had gone away
from a directors meeting without col
lecting hie fee of live dollars. In - estiga
tion proved the rumor to be nnfou. dud.
"Lnclo Russell is a director, in al.out

The usual custom iH to pay each di?'tor
that attends it meeting live dollars. Vre
quently the money is handed to the di-
ctors in the form of a gold piece as they
enter the meeting room. At other times
tho directors get their money just before
lesving the room. Some days one man
is summoned to three or four directors'
meetings. If he happens to be J. Pier
pout Morgan he will attend the meeting
of the greatest importance. If ho hap
pens to be Russell Sage ho will attend
them all.
Mr. Sage does not believe in neglecting
any of his official duties, and he considers
the collection of his live dollar fee as part
of his oflicial duty. Mr. Morgan occa
sionally accepts the fee when it is handed
to him and passes it over to a clerk or to
tlio porter of the building if he chances
to be near. Mr. Jay Gould pays no at
tention whatever to the customary di
rector's fee. The modest cashier who
tenders him a paltry live dollars does not
even receive the courtesy of a glance.

Doubtless our unlettered friends have
Bun distinctions in tho use of words, for
which wo do not give them sufficient
credit. A ui w pupil in a colored school
took a shattered lamp chimney to show
her teacher.
"Ah!" said he. "your chimney Li
broken, is il?"
"No, sir," she answered, "it's busted. "
In her distinction of terms lay all tho
difference btt'recn a confession of guilt
and an assertion of innocence. Tho
word "broken" she understood to mean
that the mishap had occurred by her
own fault; and in correcting to "busted"
he meant to imply that some unknown
agency, a current of cold air, perhaps,
had caused the break.
Here is a distinction as clear and real
as we make in more scholarly terms.
