Attempted Sulolda.
John Schmidt, a resident of
Nebraska City, aged 30, made a
desperate but unsuccessful attempt
to auicide yesterday. He had been
despondent for several days, but
Inst evening he grew more melan
choly, repaired to the barn and
fired three balls into his skull with
a large revolver. He waa uncon
scious when discovered, and when
brought to his senses by his physi
cians he admitted having shot him
self three times, and, fearing a fail
ure In this, he had cut his wrist
badly with the hope that he would
bleed to death, lie will recover.
He is thought to be insane, though
no cause is assigned for such a con

attorneys for the plaintiff have pos
itive evidence that votes were cant
for Salisbury that were so counted,
because of an alleged technicality
in the marking of the ballot. All

votes, why their opposition to a re
count? And why this bitter wail
from every democrrtic sheet in thin

An interesting case-Wagner vk.
Ilawl.n wan tried in court this
morning, in which the former sued
the latter for If."i7. The plaintiff al-
ges that he loaned Mm. Greeson,
whom Hawkn subsequently mar
ried, a sum of money, and he How
attempts to collect the anoiint
from Hawks. He alleges, and at
tempts to prove, that the defendant
authorized the woman to borrow
the money on his account, which
Hawks denies. In his testimony
the plaintiff claimed having loaned
the woman $177.."V; then again he
stated that it was $1120, and finally
he sues for $."i7. Mrs. Greeson is
well known in this city, having for
merly resided here. She married
Hawks some time since, but stibse-
qurntly left him and commenced
suit for a divorce; but the suit was
finally withdrawn ami they are now
living together ngain. In the trial
in question it was evident that her
sympathies were for the pl.iintilf.
The case has been taken under ud
vinemeut by Judge Archer.
John Seibertn, a mention of whose
arrest was made in yestcrdy's IlEH
ALti on a charge of assault, came
into court this morning and with
drew the plea that he acted in sell
defense, plead guilty to the charge
and received the usual $." and cost
sentence, upon the payment of
which he was discharged from
custody.
G. F. Allen was brought into

The new People's theater was
last night occupied by fur the larg

was the "Private Secretary." Lant
nights rendition was very creditable
and was presented in a perfectly
smooth manner. Mr. Wrn. Fairbanks
did full justice '.o the character of
the Rev. Robert Spaulding. His in

adapta him to this role. Mr. Edwin
Travers' interpretation of the roleof
"Douglas Cuttermole" whs an enter
taining piece of aeimg. The manner
