THE POSITIVE CURE.
ELY BKOTHKRS. 64 Wunn St, New York. Price 60 Ota,
HOWTO REACH THE NORTH POLE.
We may seem fully entitled to
I raw the conclusion that a current
is constant I)' ruiitiiiiif across the
polar region somewhere north of
Kran. Josef Land from the sea
north of the Siberian coast and
Herin Strait, and into the sea be
tween Spitsbergen and Greenland.
Since such a current exists, the
most natural wtiy of reaching1 the
North Pole, or a point quite near it,
must be to enter the current on the
side where it run's northward, that
is. somewhere nesir the New Siberi
an Islands, and let it carry one
straight across those unknown re
gions which it has prevented so
many from reaching.
I shall build a wooden ship as
small and as strong as possible; it
shall be j ust big enough to carry
provisions for twelve men for five
3' ears, besides the necessary coal; a
vessel of about 'JiK) tons v;?J si i nice.
The most important
feature of the ship will be that she
shall be built on such lines as will
give her the greatest power of in
sistence to the pressure of the lloe
ice. I Ier sides must not be perpen
dicular, as those of ships genersilly
are. but must slope from the bul
warks to the keel; or. to use a
sailor's expression, her "dead rise"
must be made great, so that the
iloes shall get no hold of her when
they are pressed together, but will
glide low n ward along her sides
fiml under her. thus tending to lift
her out of the water.
With this vessel, and a crew of ten
or twelve strong and well-picked
men. besides an equipment for live
years as good in all respects as
modern appliances can afford, I
think the enterprise has a good
prospect of success.

An ImproTemnit in Tunneling-.
The frequent and serious difficulty ex
perienced in the operations of tunnel
ing, namely, the subsidence of the sur
face after the completion of the work,
has lately been found to be preventable
by a simple system resorted to by a Lon
don contractor, by the use of which no
ground outside the actual section of the
subway in hand need be disturbed. The
system in question comprises a series of
steel bars placed side by side with the
excavation so as to form a complete tem
porary lining and support to the roof,
and within this series of bars the perma
nent brick arch of the tunnel is built.
The bars used in this work are ten feet
long, six inches wide, and two inches
thick, being provided at their edges with
longitudinal grooves, by means of which
each is linked to the next one in such a
way as to admit of separate longitudinal
motion, and yet to prevent lateral sepa
ration. The bars are inserted in the
same manner, as well as supported, as
ordinary tunnel bars, the ground being
excavated only the exact section of the
tunnel, plus the trifling thickness of the
bars.
After the brickwork has been built
within thein the bars are separately
pushed forward by- jaekferews as the
earth is excavated fur the succeeding
length. The bars are provided with longi
tudinal tubular cavities, through which
grouting or other filling material may be
introduced from time to time to fill
the space left vacant by the advancing
bars between the top of the lining arch
and the earth above and around, this
preventing any subsidence. New York

The frequently quoted "I do not pin
my faith upon your sleeve," is traced in
sentiment to feudal times, when the par
tisans of a leader used to wear his bade
pinned upon their sleeves. Sometimes
these badges were changed for specific
purposes, and persons learned to doubt,
hence the phrase, " You wear the badge,
but I do not intend to pin my faith on
your sleeve.'
