Mel'ar'aad's confer-.-i' ii was admitted by Jltd'c I'iehl as competent testimony yesterday which may be considered first blood lor the prosecution. II. I). !Csta::k))K of Omaha, at torney for James K. Uoyd in the governor contest case, arrived in Washington yesterday to file the necessary appeal papers. It is thought the case will not be heard until October, as the court will ad journ in a few days. A ;,V.; of White Caps on Wolf Creek, near Knoxville, Tenn., re cently went to the house of John Hallewto discipline him for causing their arrest for whipping; a woman. This time Hallew did not appeal to the authorities but o! out his "shootin irons," killing one White Cap and fatally wc.undini seven. This sort of thiny: is liable to dis courage the "regulation" idea in that neighborhood. TlIK American bark Antioch ar rived in port the other day 1M days out from Singapore, with an assort ed carj'o of India snoods. To the cap tain's surprise if not to his conster nation, the customs officers an nounce after examining h is manifest and carir that there waMi't any duty for him to pay. This is the first case of the kind on record, ac cording to the officials. The McKiuley act passed while the skipper was on the liiu'h seas and he had no notion of his m il luck until his arrival. However, the customs ofncials went smelling around the "fo'castle" and it is ru mored that the- made a haul of ciii"ars and India shawls from the sailors thc3' hmiicilel. These were of course not on the ship's bill of health. Kx. NEVS FOR! THE TIN PLATE LIARS. Information comes from Phila delphia of the organisation of the Welsh American Tin Plate Com pany, with a capital of $ 1 .000.000, for the purpose of carrying on the manufacture of tin plate in lvastern Pennsylvania. The mills to be built are to have a capacit3' of 2,0U boxes of tin plates per week, which is expected to be increased to JO.OOti. Of course the "tin plate liars" of the free trade press will ignore this piece of news, just as they did the meeting here ten days ago of repre sentatives of nearly a dozen tin plate establishments. Hut we are going to make our own tin plale in this country just the same. Xew York Press. PARTIES IN ENGLAND. In view of the probable dissolution of Parliament a glance at parties in England will be interesting. The Parliament of 18S was elected on issuses relating to the settle ment of the Irish church question, and the session of 1800 and 1S70 were devoted almost exclusively to Ireland. In that Parliament the Liberals had a majority of 115. The Parliament passed the Irish church and Irish land acts. In trying to pass a bill on the question of educa tion Mr. Gladstone was defeated and Mr. Disraehl invited to take of fice. He dissolved Parliament in 1871 and was re-elected again, going out of office on the Irish question in 1SS0. The House of Commons returned in 1SS0 consisted of 'XIS Liberals, 230 Conservatives, and 00 Home Rulers. In 11 Mr. Glad stone, containing his remedial legislation, passed another land act the Ireland, and having made the Irish policy a material part of the government measures, he ap pealed to the country in 1&S5. He demanded a decisive majority, or one, to use his own words, which would make him independent of both Tories and Parnellites com bined. He returned to power with a reduced following, the numbers being Liberals 270, Tories MIO. Parnellites S." thus securing a ma jority of 45 in a full house. Making home rule a government bill in li he was thrown out of office in June. lSSti. In the ireneral election which followed the Tories were returned with a restored following, the num. bers being 313 Conservative, UninniM.s, nnl s I'.-irm'llitt's. Tlic Irish question is still unsrt t led, imd speaking frankly, Hit prospects of settlement an- less favorable now than they were inlS, ami probably a home-rule bill would be rejected by a far jreater majority llian at, wiiieh .-eeun-cl ;ts rejection wlx-n i nt rod need by M r. CIS .IS I, V'-' Mi'.nav y- Don't Be Duped There have lately been placed upon the market several cheap reprints of an obsolete edition of " Webster's dictionary They are being offered at a low price By dry tcoodi dealers, grocers, clothiers, etc., and in a few instances as a premium for subscriptions to papers. Announcements of these comparatively Worthless reprints ar yery misleading; for instance, they are advertised to be the substantial equivalent f "an eight to twelve dollar book," when in reality from A to Z they are all Reprint Dictionaries, phototype copies of a book of over forty years aco, which in its day was sold for about S-r.0o, and which was much superior in paper, print, and bindine to these imitations, being then the best Dictionary of the time instead of one Long Since Obsolete. The supplement of lO.Oon so-called "new words," which some of these books are advertised to con tain, was compiled by a gentleman who has been dead over thirty years, and was published be fore his death." Other additions are probably reprints of a like character. The Genuine Kdition of "Webster's Una bridged Dictionary, which is tho only one familiar to this generation, contains over 200 pages, with illustrations on nearly every pae, and bears our imprint on the title page. It is protected by copyright from cheap imitation. Valuable as this work is, we have at vast ex pense published a thoroughly revised successor, the name of which is Webster's Intebnatiosai.
