A Wonderful I. a I.e.
Ono of the most picturesque and rcmark
nHrj bodies of water in tho wo. Id is Henry's
lake in Idaho. It Is situated in the d.oni3 of
the continent in a oVj i c ton in the Itocky
mountains called TaryeoV pass. It has au
urea of forty square tnil-w, md nil around it
rise snow capped pf-ako, some of them being
the highest of the, continent's hack Ume. In
the lake i.s a floating island about JiOO feet in
diameter. It has for its basis n mat of roots
so dense that it supports largo tree3 and a
heavy growth of underbrush. These roots
are covered with several feet of rich soiL
The surface is solid enough to support the
weight of a h or so anywhere, and there nro
places where a houso could ba built. Tho
wind blows tho island about tl;e lake, and it
seldom remains twenty-four hours iu the
baiuo place. San Fraucisco Post.

Many good le-sults may hive followed
Imperceptibly from this same tendency

that the forcible interruption of a public
liu'eting by tho opposite party, although
very common in England, is very rare in
America. In general, " it Ii us, usages are
more flexible, more adaptive; in public
meetings, for instance, we get rid of a
great many things that are unutterably
tedious, as the English practieo of mov

themselves quite, as incessantly, move so

The longest pendulum on this continent
swings in the technological school at
Atlanta. It is a heavy pear shaped piece
of iron attached to a brass wire forty
two feet long. The upper end of the
wire is pivoted in tt steel plate f;. as to
cause th'i least jMssiblo friction. Tho
swinging of the pendulum gradually d.

following the sun, showing in this thai
"the earth do move."
Directly under the pendulum i a large

the hours of tho day. The north pole is
plaacd directly under the pendulum and

The parallels of latitude make entailer

Dr. J. S. Hopkins, president of the
school, who mado and put up the pendu
lum, perforins the experiment as follows:
THo iron is brought to the edge of, the i
circle in the meridian of Atlanta and let '
swing across. Apparently it goes straight
across, but gradually it traverses the
circle in the direction taken by l lie hiiu
and opposite to tho revolution of lb i
