THAT CAME OF BALL.
Norfolk Savagely Bats the Sphere
and Treads tho Diamond.
The Home Team Unable to Handle
Them
Yesterday afternoon at :$ o'clock was
called the second gams of ball between
Norfolk and Plattsmouth ut the ball
park. The game opened with Norfolk
at tho bat. Jas. Putterson catching and
Tom Patterson pitching. Four talleys
were scored by t'sein in this inning,
Plattsmouth followed with a goose egg
and Norfolk cume in to bat Stephenson
and made one talley. The homo team
again followed with an "0" and Norfolk
took up the bat with high spirit and
vigorously prosecuted their cause against
the homo team which it seemed they were
completely "on to." Six talleys were
here scored and King made a home run
and brought in r. man with a fly over the
fence as did Wilson in the first inning.
Plattsmouth finished the third inning
with the same rcMilt of the other two
and then followed three innings without
any scores. Tho seventh time at the bat
Norfolk tallied tm", to another "0" for
our team. In their eighth inning the
Pl.tttsiiiMuth boys too!; up tha b it with a
determination t ) do something. Stephen
sun made second and Pollock took the
b it with two outs ag oust him, but a
square hit on the bail sent it to center
field Htid brought Steph. nson home amid
grett cheering. This was Plattsmouth's
first and only talley, in iking the score

Sunday School Picnic
As mentioned before in the Herald
the i. E. Sunday school is planning for
a picnic soon to Cushman Park in Lin
coln. This is a most beautiful report on
the Ii. fe M., which has a station at the
park and will be most easily reached
from this city. Manuger K. II. Andrus
has wiitten the park committee of the
school that the park with all privileges
will be given them on Tuesday June 23
which has been accepted and the B. & M.
company has reduced rates for the round
trip to $1.2o for adults and Co cents for
children, provided one hundred tickets (
or more be sold, which s liberal enough j
that many more tickets than the required
number should be taken. It will be a
most delightful trip for young and old,
which the management propose that it
should be.
Th;i excursion cars will leave on No
3 at 7 a. m. and return on No. 0 at 7:19
p. m. " But in case $187 worth of tickets,
are sold a special train will be run.

A Pointer From a Citizen on the
School Board's Selection of
a Superintendent.
Plattsmouth, June 1!. Ki, IIkiialm:
Wholly on the grounds of sympathy,
and not on any pretense that it was for
the best interest of the schools of our
city, the school board has seen fit to re
elect DruHimond to the snperintendency
tif our schools for another year with the
understanding that this is to end his ca
reer in that position.
In view of the fact that the patrons of
the schools by an overwhelming vote last
spring indicated that they wanted a
change, we think the board can scarcely
justify its action in returning him for
another year. The fact of buying prop
erty and building a big housj should not
beja sufficient considerrtion on which to
retain a man in olliehd position when a
majority of t'.i j p:oti; .!.:. ; a eh i:g.;.
as is clearly the fact in this case. Indeed
when any considerable minority of the
patrons of the schools becom.; dissatisfied
and desire a change in the management
of the schools it is an accepted maxium
that the change should be made.
It is a notorious fact, su -c-.-ptibla of
easy proof, that our schools are away be.
low the standard of sehools of cities
and towns of this state and Iowa much
sm.iller than Plattsmouth, and ci rtainly
the prospect for the coming year is not
pleasing to thosu of our people who
wouhl like to see our schools placed on
a footing commensurate with the impor
tance of our city. Strang? isn't it tint
a mm should want to foist his services
on an unwilling public as hasb)en done
in this case?
Some satisfaction may be obtained,
however, in the fact that it is only for
an other year.
BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Prof. Drummond Re-e'ected as
Supt. and Teachers Selected.
Last night the board of education met
in called session and transacted the fol
lowing business, all members being pres
ent: Misses Oliye Gass, Maggie Berry,
May Berry, of this city were elected as
teachers, and Miss Ethel Runnell, of
Geneseo, 111., was elected as assistant
principal of the high school, and Miss
Bessie Runnell, of the same place, to an
intermediate position. The board then
proceeded to ballot for superintendent.
Thirteen ballots were cast, the last result
ing, Drummond 4, Kauffman 2.
Miss Cora B. Brooks, of Mou.it Vernon,
Iowa, was elected as a school teacher.
The board directed that all the teachers
shall be examined, an. I must pass 7o in all
the branches in which they expect to
teach.
The board authorized the conrnittee to
do repairing on west Third ward school,
high school and South Park buildings.
All the positions of teachers are now
filled except principal. There is no ap- j
plicant for the place yet.
