Tiie IJcitrico ExprtHH, of jcaterday
publitlied a ilecriptiou ut Oklahoma as
given y I Ion. George IJ. Prerctt, after
just returning from there, as follows:
"As reginls the country from an agri
cultural point of view Mr. Everett thinks
it an utter failure. The soil is of a dry
loose sandy character ub 1 id only In hi
onto its layer of reddish rock clay hy a
fow hunch grius roots, which when once
removed permits the study soil to Mow
away leaving grert hire spots of clay
tint are as hard and dry as a democratic
promise of reform.
There are some few toleraMy fair al
leys along the alkali is t reams but when
they are n"t dry and baked with gaping
earth cracks they are impassable bogs.
The upUuiU are useless for farming pur
poses and as a whole Oklahoma is a mis
erable lizzie. People ara coming away
from therewith the same enthusiasm with
which thoy entered the strip, . only dis
gusted with themselves for being fools
enough to bito at the miserable bubble.
The Cherokee strip is a grand section
of country and if it is opened for settle
ment within the near future there will bi
some slight compensation of the Oklaho
ma fizzle.
As regards Guthrie, the town is about
as dead as it was once lively. It is com
pletely over run with gamblers and con
fidence iiK-u who came with the mob to
prey off the miseries or the unfortunate.
Gambling is carried on with reckless
abandon. Water is scarce at five cents a
glass, and but fcr the wise provision of
the government in prohibiting tha sale
or importation of liquor into the terri
tory, there would have been some bloody
scenes.
Every man carries a weapon openly,
from a 22 calibre fly killer to a 44 Coifs
navy revolver with its accompaniment
of cutler-, and while no serious distur
bances have occurred, they are liable to
break out at any moment. The mass cf
people that invested their all, in getting
to the strip, are disappointed, disheart
ened and discouraged.
Such as were fortunate enough to
squat unmolested on a piece of land, are
in the country too late for raising a crop
this season and while matters are
enough now, the hot dry suirmer and
uccecding winter, presents anything but
an encouraging outlook for the boomers.
Sir. Everett says he had a tremendous
amount of experience in a mighty little
while, an-1 that he has no further desire
no participate in an Oklahoma boon. lie
relates many amusing incidents of his
experience ami eongraiuiar.es nitiis---ir
that he has no interests there.'

another says "Prof. Chapek, first assis
tant of Prof. Strassman, the world
famous optician, will lie at the Gibbon
house May 7, to treat any ailment of your

doubtless refers to that class who have
for many years seen the county seated
majestically on a prominent corner in
thst village, in their mind's eye, but old
age has liedimmed that organ so that the
number of cars, or, in other words, iu
order that eoiuc bnsis may be obtained to
regulate the quantity of coal actually re
quired. The indicator rests on the steam
chest of the boiler. This is a device of
George Cushing, superintendent of mo
tive power of the Lnion Pacific, who,
bad ! iust at present, is laying out plans for
rigid economy. lie is of the opinion
that the firemen are waiting coal to a
large extent by not filing their engines
properly, and has devised this system of J
ascertaining the quantity required to
move rapid and heavy trains.
