A few years ago the South bought of others all its hardware and agricultural implements. 2ow it realizes its wealth 'if coal and iron, and in three yeais has started 76 iron furtaces, 52 implement factories, and about 300 machine shops and foundries. Twenty thousand miles of railroad have been built in the South rn ptates since 1880, and more than 1700,000,000 expended in building new roads and improving old ones. There tre now in those states more than 300 cotton mills using 1,800,000 spindles. iguinst ISO mills and 700,000 spindles in I8i0. The value of cotton goods made lu re in 1883 was nearly $:0, 000,000, as o;!nst fJl.OOO.OJO in 1SS0. The vain f t!e agricultural products of theSoutd i was $800,000,000, against $570. 00:000 in 18S0. In 1880 the amount of .Tain raised in that section was 430,000. 00 bushels, and in 18S8it was 620,000. 100 bushels. More than a score ot- c:r nd locomotive works in the South are now supplying rolling stock for the 20,000 miles of railroad built since 880; 300 canning factories have been opened in three years to use up Southern fruit; ind glass, bricks, furniture, vehicles and t host ot other articles are now being made at home out of the South's own raw matorials. This is solid prosperity. TLis is substantial progress. This is aising the South from the dependent condition of a purely agricultural section co the independent manhood of a sym netrically developed people. It carries ut the American system of supplying tome demands with home products, and ns'ini for home products a profitable' Kinie demand. American Economist EL P.
