It is many years since the cable hss brought from Europe news pointing to a decrease of armament But now comes the announcement that one-half of the Servian army has been disbanded. This will leave the standing army about 100, 000 strong, and will relieve a number f very poor families of a great load of taxation. Caxnel coal in large quantities has been discovered in Alaska, the mineral products of which territory seem to be far in excess of the most .sanguine ex pectation. Its future wealth will be enormous, for even in its present unde veloped condition its annual revenues, acco d'nsj to the govirnor's report, ex ceed $9,000,000. The grand jury of Conway county, Ark., has adjourned, and as was pre dicted, no indictment was returned against Clayton's assassins. Judge Cun ningham delivered his charge to the jurors all right and the state offered a big reward but it looks to an outsider as if it was all done as a blind as no at tempt furthur was made to bring the asaassing to justice. Oklahoma can not be opened up before July 1st even if the president issues hir proclamation on the first day he i-- OUR MEXICAN TRADE. m i i . . inare can ue noaouut out toe im portance of cultivating friendly relations of a commercial character with Mexico She is our nearest neighbor, and should be bound to us much closer than she is at present. Her government is in many re spects similar to ours; her interests are the same as ours in various directions; and there is no reason why the trade be tween the two countries should fail to be a source of mutual and considerable profit. But as a matter of fact we do not sell her even a reasonable proportion of the products she has to buy. and do not purchase from her one-fourth as much as we should. Orcat Britain, France and Germany control her mar kets and practically shut us out. That is to say, goods are brought from those countries and sold t her people in such quantities as we never send there. By some means our advantage in the way of location is neutralized, and other nations reap lenefits which logically and proper ly belong to us. Where the trouble lies it is difficult to determine; but cer tainly there is something decidedly wrong some where, or our Mexican com merce would be much larger and more profitable. The proposition to appoint a senate committee for the investigation of the matter is a good one. There should be a careful and thorough effort made to get at the facts in the case, and to ascer- ain what legislation is needed to secure our ilue snare ot a trade winch is being monopolized by European nations. t must be that Mexico would prefer to lo business with us, the conditions and nduceuients being equal; and surely we can offer us favorable terms as any otlirr country. There are many millions of dollars of American capital invested in her railroads and other enterprises; and our merchants are constantly soliciting patronage in her principal cities and towns. But in spite of this, the bulk of the trade goes to Great Britian, France and Germany. We manufacture every thing that she need9, and have use for everything that she produces; and vt-t we re beten at every point by competitors on the other side of the Atlantic. The ew administration is pledged to do all it can for the promotion of friendliness with all the countries of the Western Hemisphere; and it should begin by giv inc earnest attention to the situation a Mexico. We have more to gain time than in any other country. Political as well as geographical and industrial rm sons are in our favor, if we can but con trive to give them proper effect. The hinderancea, whatever they are, should be removed as soon as possible, and in a spirit of neighborly kindness. For want of such action, we are losing a large measure of profit which would otherwise come to us. Our Mexican trade can ba made ten times as valuable as it has ever yet been; and the sooner we take thenec essary steps far that purpose the better it will ba for our commercial welfare and progress. uiooe Democrat.
