A very large attendance is expected. The IJohemim aristocracy are mak ing great preparations for a masquerade ball w hich will be held in 1-itzgeraiu , hall on the evening of January 11. Four prizes will be presented for the handsom est costumes. To.lay was the day appointed for the horse race between the horses owned by Shreave. and Ketchup. As there was forfeit money deposited to the amount of $:i0, the race will prob-ibly occur, but we liaye not yet learned. Mr. A. White, who is the possessor of a tine Gordon setter, walked away with the first prize at the dog show at Omaha yesterday, where he had the ani m il on exhibition. The prize consisted of a handsome silver cup, of which Mr. White is very proud. As Mr. Win. K reck low and wife wen- driving along the road in the vicinity of the cemetery yesterday afternoon, their horse was scared by an object at the b'uh of the road, causing it to run away. Mr. K. aud his wife were thrown out, and the buggy smashed to atoms. Fortun ately neither oue of them was seriously hurt. The board of health of this city held a meeting last night and considered the opening of ihe schools which have so long been closed owing to the prevalence of diphtheria. The board has decided to open them on Monday next, but a second meeting will be held this after noon from which will arise further de velopments. Drs. Liyingston and HaseiiHier per formed a critical surgical opperation on Mr. W. E. Farmer, atraveling man who had stopped at the farm house of C. (J. Mayfield in a dangerous condition. Whisler, who left Plattsmouth several months ago to uccept a position as engineer on a road in California, re turned to the city last night. We were unable to learn the cause of his ritum, l.f were informed that it Was his intention to remain here, where his fami ly i4 located. "A Pair of Kids." The most satisfactory entertainment of the season was given at the Waterman op-.-ra house last night by Ezra F. Ken dall, the eccentric comedian and his ex cellent company in "A Pair of Kids. The house was a very fair one, and much la"er than the average. Never before was an audience so completely amused. and during the whole play the - npprecia tion was made manifest by the continual expression of jolitication, and the greater part of the time the entire audience was in an uproar of lsughler. Kendall is ex tamely comical as the old cauntryman, and his various mistakes and mishaps are ma..1 or met with great naturalness. The audience was even kept laughing whn W looked at them. His whistle was a comical feature, and his "Well, I be darned," capped the climax. Kendall has pleased Plattsmouth people so much th ;t he has been engaged for a return date the 1-ith. Mrs. Fitz Steer, of Louisville, nar rowly escaped being run oyer by a locomotive at the depot this morning. Had her husband not pulled her from the track the second he did, she would surely have been caught. Several who witnessed her narrow escape were about paralyzed for a minute. Mrs. Campbell, who died in the poor ho ue Thursday, was buried this after noon at -2 o'clock. Mr. John A. Howard, tool, charge of the burial. Rev. H. IJ. Burgess, pastor of the Episcopal church, conducted the ceremony. Mr. B. Anderson, of Chariton, Iowa, formerly proprietor of the Riddle house (Peikias) here, is in the city visiting his daughter, Mrs. Jas. Patterson, jr. Elder J. K. Reed, of Omaha, will be stationed in this city as pustor of the ClniUian church, lie will preach to morrow, morning and evening. W. I). Porter found his horse dead in the stable this morning. The Nebraska legislature will be in session at the time of the meeting, and it is important that the meeting" be one of the I ngest in the history of the associa tion. Important matters will be up for action on the part of the membership. It is urged that as many as possible of the four hundred newspaper men in the state attend and join the state asso ciation.
