The republicans will soon 1'e in power and absolute control of the subject and will admit every territory that has a right to become a btatc which can ivc nwuraotc tint it will help to re elect Harrison ami Morton. Thk lending bankers of New York who have been interviewed on ihu ques tion say they d not believe .that the Imrstin ,,f the Panama Canal bubble will affect business in the United States. Tr will iintlotiKtedlv bo felt ill most of the financial centers of Europe, however, iilthotiijli, as it li.is been expected for the past year or more, the effect will be far less severe than if it were to come uii lipralded. The tirineiuiil sufferer, of course, will be Fr ince, as nearly all the money Funk in the scheme has been fur nished by that country. Globe Dcm. A XEWiipArEK published at the capi tal of New Mexico says editorially: "Why should the English language not b taught in the public schools of Xew Mexico? That is the question." Yet the democrats in congress demand that this territory fthall be admitted to state hood, and threaten to adhere to the om nibus bill which virtually makes its ad mission a condition of their agreeing to admit any of the other territories that are ready to become states. They believe they have a sure thing for their party on New Mexico, and the above question explains why. Bee. Competent critics have frequently re marked that the author of "Ben-IIur" had in him the elements of a dramatist. Their judgment upon General Lew. Wal lace will be sustained by his plap "Com modus," in Harper's Magazine for January. The action of the drama develops several powerful scenes, the vig or of which J. P. Wcgutlin. artist, ren ders withridelity in as many illustrations. One of the drawings, entitled "This Bait ing thou shalt rue," forms the frontis piece of the Magazine. There is a sug gestion of the Greek chorus in the band of Bacchantes. The refrain of their song, "On to Rome," dominates the whole drama; it catches together in a phrase ihb leading thread of the plot. THE COMING ECLIPSE. There will be an eclipse of the sun, total in some parts of the "country and covering about four-fifths of the surface of that luminary here just before sunset 'on the 1st of January. This eclipse was known to be coming before the news went abroad that the Nebraska legisla ture would organize that day for war, and so it cannvt be said to have any con nection with that astronomical event. It is not often that eclipses select New Tear's day. oi Christmas, or the 4th of Ju ly for their festivity but they sometimes design to take part in ft great national holiday. This one is welcome, and we liope it will be unobstructed by clouds, so that all Nebraska can enjoy the sight of it. There are some constitutional lawyers who lie awake nights now for fear that Wause the first Tuesday in January is a legal holiday any business that the legis lature may transact will be null and void. "We trust that they will not also claim that this eclipse will be null an void for the same reason. By the way, Sunday is the only holiday that anybody ever heard of on which business of any sort cannot be transacted, and our constitutional lunatics may rot easy enough about the opening of the legislative session.
