- The-is probably none of the common
branches in which the majority of per
sons are more deficient than in spelling.
It will be admitted that the subject is a
hard one, difficult to learn and diflicult
to teach. More sninviting and devoid
of interest than any other in the whole
course. The only royal r nd to profi
ciency in this branch is tho one that
brings us in contact with ft very word in
tin? lajiiguige. There are a few rules
that may be relied uion to some extent,
bat most of them have nearly as many
exceptions as examples, and usually con
fuse rather than assist the student After
all the only urc way is to learn to spel
each Kepemte word. Considering tho
vast amount of work to master such
branch, it is no wonder the poor spellers
are so numerous. Yet, but these diffi
culties do but little toward excusing the
wholesale butchery of spelling, so com
mon in business correspondence. Good
spelling is not always an evidence of
culture, but bad spelling is invariably
taken as an indication of ignorencc,
Nothing looks more hideous in a busi
ness document or grates more haishly
upon the feelings of good educated
business men, than misspelled words.
Most young persons while prcnariu
for a business life, are too indifferent in
this ma ter. You may set it down as
an unchangeable rule that bud spelliug
h never excusable. It is always the re
sult of ignorance or carelesness. No one
cares to plead guilty to the former and
thonsauds of business clerks answer the
criticisms of their employers with the
old excuse, "I knew how to spell the
word it is simply a mistake." So
much the worse if this excuse will cover
bai spelling, ii also do for bad
grammar, erasures, blots, sotlcd and
slovenly work of all kinds.
It matter but little how much you
know unless you put into practical use.
Ignorance is inexcusable, curcjeupess is
intolerable.
However great the task, a knowledge
of spelling must be acquired and not no
uvich by memorizing rules as by study
ing words; and when once acquired, it
nu.it bp carefully put into use. The
nost uns iti factory excuse of all is, "I
knew better it is shjipjy $ mistake." A
'mistake" in oflice work has ctit yaajiy
i clerk his position. The person who
;an get through the world with the least
number of mistakes will mnke the
greatest success.
