Ide of the Loco Weed.
No other plant in the flora of Texas has
exjoyed a greater notoriety than the fa
mous "loco" or "crazy weed." Popular
superstition has accredited it with a most
remarkable property, and that is, the
power of producing insanity in man and
beast. Eotanically, the plant is known
as Astragalus molissimus. Tho extrava
gant stories that have been told about it
recently led Mr James Kennedy to inves
tigate its properties and determine what
physiological phenomena result from Its
action.
As the result of his investigations and
his experiments upon animals feeding in
pastures, Mr. Kennedy finds conclusively
that the plant is non-toxic and innocu
ous and possesses none of the properties
long ascribed to it by popular supersti
tion. lie thinks that the Immense de
struction of stock with which it has been
charged may hare been caused by some
poisonous plant heretofore unsuspected,
or if the "loco" really has produced death,
it has done so by reason of the tough,
fibrous and indigestible character of the
plant acting as an irritant, and not as a
poLion. Scientific American.
Mating l'ine tirade Candle,
Tho process of making the "cream" is
identical in both wholesale and retail es
tablishments. Confectioners' sugar is
first boiled until It becomes a thick and
waxy syrup. It is then turned out on
slabs and allowed to partially cool. In
the retail establishments it Is then worked
with wooden paddles until the gTain is 6o
stretched that the mass Is resolved into a
soft, snowy compound, ready for the
flavors or to be mixed with fruit or nuts.
In the wholesale factories 160 pounds of
clear vmp is turned out on a slab at one
time. Vhen it has cooled enough to work
a candy maker stations himself at either
end. Ho holds a common garden spado.
Together the two workers turn and turn
tho hardening sugar until it is white
Then it is packed away in big iron recep
tacles and covered with heavy, wet cloths
to keep it from hardening.
This cream is the basis of all the finest
grade candies in tho market. It is in the
manufacture of this cream that dealers
have revolutionized methods and brought
that of America to the highest standard
in the world. Candy is not made in such
vast quantities In any other land. Tho
famous confections of tho Orient aro not
to be compared, either in quality or quan
tity, with thoso of the United States.
Eastern compounds aro largely of the
nougat order and made in small quanti
ties. Armenian Greeks offer Turkish
paste along State street every day for
sale. It is t urned out in a big cohe ex
actlv as it is cooled in the pot. It is sold
Ju feUeos. It is after this fame fashion
that the confections of tho east are all
made- French bonbons do not suit the
American palate. They aro not distinct
flavors as a rule. Instead, they are a con
glomeration of flavors so mixed as to
make subtle but intangible flavor that
can be attributed neither to fruit nor

tho cue of the new impulse to discuss
human culture, makes some' suggestions
Under tho heading "Homiculture." He
believes a good deal could be done by
directing public attention to the jatf
that underlie improvement' of stock. He
also urges that before a marriage permit

submit to a medical examination, to show
that they are not Jahpring under heredi

the absolute prohibition of habitual crim

What Am I To Do?
The symptoms of biliousness are un
hrtpily hut too well known. They differ
in different individuals to some extent.
A bilious man is seldom a breakfast eater.
Too frequently, alas, h: has an excellent
app lite for liquids but none for solids
of a morning. I lis tongue Avill hardly
bear inspection at any time; if it is not
whiti and furred, it is. rough, at all

The digestive system is wholly out of
order and diarrhea or constipation may
be a symptom or the two may alternate.
Then: are often hemorrhoids or even loss
of blood. There maj' be giddiness and
often headache and acidity or flatulence
and tenderness in the pit of the stomach

Work of a Story Writer,
In beginning to write a story, it is well
to have a basis resting upon fact, either
in circumstance or personality, lor this
eason tho author should bo able to dis
sect Iranian nature with keen analysis.
No trt.it, uo eccentricity, no expression,
in the broad volume which mankind con
stantly opens before him should escape
his attention, but everything he sees
should be stored up as valuable materia
in his literary laboratory. A fitting com
bination oi individual traits in different
person: can be ' assimilated in pno mental
creation, although a just consistency must
be observed. It is often amusijig to art
author to find his stories read and dis
cussed by the very persons whom he has
embodied in his hero, with never a sus
picion, on their part, that their own char
acteristics have formed a ground work frt
the interesting fiction. irginia G. El
